A Khasadar (a local tribal force) personnel, Raees Khan, was injured during search operation against militants in Ziarai Mountain of Landikotal in Khyber Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 2, reports Daily Times. Gunship choppers pounded hideouts of militants in Ziarai Mountain. The search operation was started as terrorists had taken away important equipments from the towers of two cellular services providing companies from mountaintop, rendering cell phone service dysfunctional in Landikotal and its adjoining areas.

Two militants were killed in an encounter after a roadside bomb went off near a Police mobile van at Samar Bagh Police Station in Timergara town in Lower Dir District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 2, reports Dawn. Sources said that the Police were on routine patrol when a roadside bomb exploded hitting the rear part of the van. Additional Station House Officer Shah Khalid, Assistant Sub-Inspector Razimand Khan and Constable Qismat Ali were injured in the blast. District Police Officer Dir Lower Mumtaz Zarin said that two militants, behind the bomb explosion, were chased and killed in an encounter with Police and local lashkar (tribal militia). A bomb, two suicide jackets, two uniforms, a battery cell and 10-yard wire were recovered from the possession of the slain militants. However, the identities of the slain militants were yet to be conformed.

The Special Investigation Unit of the Sindh Police on January 12 arrested three former students of Karachi University involved in attacking the Imamia Student Organisation (ISO) with a bomb on December 28, 2010, reports Daily Times. The suspects included Mohammad Omer alias Chota, Hafeez Ullah alias Bilal and Syed Faiz Ali and are running their own outfit ‘Punjabi Mujahideen’. The arrests were made after a brief encounter at Mauripur road in Karachi and two hand grenades, one Kalashnikov, two repeaters, two TT pistols and one high roof vehicle were also recovered from their possession. The suspects are said to be former workers of Islami Jamiat Talaab from where they were expelled in 2007. The suspects are reported to be following Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) ideology, which is evident from the fact that they got training in Waziristan, Augi and Miranshah areas of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

Meanwhile, a Frontier Corps (FC) trooper was shot dead and five others, including a woman, were injured in a gun battle between assailants and FC forces in a small village of Turbat in Kech District. A vehicle of FC was on routine patrol in Dasht Gokdan area, some five kilometres from Turbat town, when two armed assailants riding a motorbike opened indiscriminate fire on them. Resultantly, a trooper died on the spot while two other personnel received bullet injuries. The two assailants were arrested after an exchange of fire and were taken into custody by Police. Clashes started after the militants attacked Anargi security post with heavy weapons, killing three SF personnel and injuring four others. 18 militants were killed and several others were wounded after SFs opened fire in retaliation. The Mohmand chapter of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Sajjad Mohmand said over phone that only seven militants were killed and three were injured. However, the intensity of the second blast was less. One of the suicide bombers blew himself up in a vehicle packed with explosives near the car of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Frontier Corps (FC) in Balochistan, Farrukh Shehzad. The other suicide bomber entered his house and blew himself up. The dead included his guards. The explosions brought down the walls of his house and nearby offices. Locals said that militants targeted Stadium checkpost and Amin post with heavy and light weapons from the roofs of high buildings in Miramshah Bazaar. SFs, backed by helicopter gunships and artillery, targeted the buildings where suspected militants were taking shelter. The gun battle continued for over 16 hours. Sources said that SFs blew up the Medical Complex Plaza, destroying more than 50 medicine shops, costly machinery including ultrasound machines, X-ray plants and other valuable electronic equipment causing millions of rupees losses to the owners.
