A security man was killed and four others were injured in a gun battle between security forces and militants in the Lanjo Sighari area of Dera Bugti, on the Punjab-Balochistan border on Mrach 30, according to Dawn. Inter-Services Public Relation Director-General Maj-Gen Waheed Arshad confirmed the death of Frontier Corps (FC) soldier Ehsanullah. According to sources, militants also suffered casualties in the heavy fighting which lasted for several hours and security forces arrested 60 militants, five of them in injured condition. They said the security forces had launched a search operation in Lanjo Sighari near RD-109 of Pat Feeder, after receiving information about presence of camps of militants in the village. When security personnel reached the village, militants opened fire on them. The security men retaliated and later cordoned off the area. "The security forces and militants used heavy weapons, including rockets, mortar shells and machine guns," the sources said, adding that over a dozen militants had been killed in the fighting. However, it was not officially confirmed. Nawabzada Baramdagh Bugti, a grandson of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti, claimed that over 12 Bugti tribesmen, including women and children, were killed in the fighting in Lanjo Sighari. He told journalists in Quetta that security forces from Sindh and Punjab also took part in the operation in which helicopters were used for bombing.

On May 12, 27 people were killed in firing between supporters of President Pervez Musharraf and suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar M Chaudhry in Pakistan's commercial capital Karachi, reports Associated Press. Groups of activists belonging to Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), a partner in the federal ruling coalition, and those of opposition parties supporting the suspended Chief Justice, fought pitched street battles using assault rifles in different parts of Karachi. Geo TV said that more than 150 people were injured in the clashes. Chaudhry, who arrived in Karachi to address a rally of High Court lawyers, was stranded at the airport and was asked by the local government to avoid the meeting and return home. While lawyers accompanying him from Islamabad returned, the judge threatened to walk to the venue of the meeting. Late night, he, however, decided to return to Islamabad. Following the violence, however, President Pervez Musharraf reiterated to hold free and fair polls later this year and described the issue involving the suspended Chief Justice was a "temporary irritant".

At least 12 people were killed and around 150 injured in a daylong shootout between Madrassa (seminary) students and security force personnel near the pro-Taliban Lal Masjid (red mosque) on July 3, according to Daily Times. The administration confirmed that a journalist, one soldier of the para-military Rangers, a businessman, seminary students and bystanders were among the dead. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the death toll had mounted to 16. Sporadic clashes continued till past midnight when unconfirmed reports suggested a massive security operation to clear the Lal Masjid of armed militants, according to Dawn. The shootout commenced at around 11am after students of the Jamia Hafsa and Jamia Fareedia, Madrassas affiliated to the Lal Masjid, marched towards the nearby Environment Ministry building and a security picket outside it. The students snatched weapons from police and took four officials hostage, according to the police. Rangers personnel fired teargas to repel them, and students stationed inside the mosque responded by opening fire, witnesses said. The students subsequently set fire to the ministry and Estate Office buildings in front of their seminaries. The encounter between the two sides reportedly continued the whole day. Students armed with AK-47s and wearing gas masks took up positions behind sandbags on the roof of the mosque and bunkers inside the mosque courtyard, chanting "Jihad, Jihad!" There are some 5,000 students at the seminaries affiliated to the Lal Masjid. Dawn reported that the Lal Masjid brigade was equipped with 3mm riffles, Kalashnikovs, 222 rifles, hand-grenades, petrol bombs, tear-gas shells and light weapons.

On July 5, there were repeated exchanges of gun-fire and a continuous hovering of helicopters around the area. Senior officials of Pakistan Rangers and the interior ministry said that even though they had rejected cleric Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi’s terms for surrender, including his request for safe passage, they were still delaying the storming of the complex in order to allow parents of some of the trapped students to use their influence to get their children out. There was also reportedly an attempt by several militants to escape from the complex. However, all of them were arrested.

Security forces, assisted by helicopter gunships, killed 15 militants in an encounter near the Banda checkpoint in North Waziristan on July 31, according to Dawn. Major General Waheed Arshad, Director-General of the Inter-Services Public Relations, said 18 "miscreants" were killed when about 40 of them tried to attack a military checkpoint near Miranshah, Daily Times reported. Though the military spokesperson denied any casualties among the troops, villagers said some soldiers were killed or injured in the fighting. The clash reportedly occurred when two vehicles were seen moving towards a paramilitary post, some five kilometres south of the Miranshah town. Even as the troops fired warning shots from the Banda post, people in the vehicles fired back at the paramilitary forces and an encounter ensued. The troops later also utilised Cobra helicopters which targeted suspected locations of the militants in the area and the two vehicles. Sources said that the troops had encircled the Banda area and the Miranshah village.

Eyewitnesses said that after the exchange of fire, hundreds of Taliban supporters surrounded the house of Yousaf Khan, who had by that time left the place along with his family, and set it ablaze. Residents said that the Taliban later traced down the fleeing ‘criminals’ in the Kasorai mountains of Tamanzo area killing six of them while abducting six others. During the past one month, militants have killed at least eight persons in their drive against ‘crimes’ in the agency. Two of them were reportedly beheaded.

Witnesses said the weekly fare was in progress when a group of militants appeared from nowhere and opened indiscriminate fire on the people. Three persons, Nawar, Bismillah Jan and Mohammad Ali were killed on the spot. Witnesses said that the militants arrived in three pick-up trucks and were armed with sophisticated weapons, including Kalashnikovs. A spokesman for the local Taliban, Abdu Nauman Askari, said that they had earlier warned Akhtiar Khan, the organiser of the cockfighting fare and alleged ringleader of gambling dens in the area, to abandon the ‘anti-Islam’ practices. An official of the concerned Sro Kaley police station told Dawn that the militants had entered the area from the adjacent Mohmand Agency. He added that since the militants came through unfrequented routes, it was difficult for police to trace them.

Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson, was assassinated on December 27 in a gun and suicide attack as she drove away from a campaign rally just minutes after addressing thousands of supporters at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi, according to Daily Times. 30 more people were killed and over 100 others, including Benazir’s political secretary Naheed Khan and Sherry Rehman, wounded when a suicide attacker riding on a motorbike blew himself up after firing at Benazir who was waving to her supporters from her vehicle’s sun roof. PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar stated that Benazir fell inside the vehicle after receiving bullets in her head and neck. Witnesses said three gun shots were heard before the suicide blast near her Black Lexus bulletproof vehicle. She later died at the Rawalpindi General Hospital. “The blast happened at around 5:10pm and the doctors pronounced her dead at 5:25pm,” Babar said. "It may have been pellets packed into the suicide bomber's vest that hit her," interior ministry spokesman Javed Cheema told AFP. Following the assassination, PPP activists reacted violently in different cities in Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan. Angry protestors took to the streets, pelted stones, burned government and private property and various vehicles besides chanting slogans against the government, The Post reported. At least 10 people were killed in different parts of the country, including two in Lahore, during the exchange of fire. In Karachi, police said at least 70 vehicles were burnt by protesters, including 35 trucks filled with wheat. All petrol pumps were immediately closed as knots of protesters blocked many roads. Incidents of aerial firing were reported in different parts especially in Peshawar, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Quetta. Official sources told The News that civil armed forces have been summoned in aid of the security agencies to maintain law and order, adding the security around sensitive installations and government personalities has been beefed up.
