The clashes broke out after pro-Taliban militants abducted four Pakistan soldiers in South Waziristan on January 1, the official said. "Five militants were killed yesterday and 22 overnight," he stated. The official disclosed that the abducted soldiers were delivering food rations from one post to another when militants seized them. Their fate was not immediately known. Both sides used heavy weaponry in the clashes that went on through the night, resulting in the death of 22 militants with no loss of life on the army side, he claimed.

Troops repulsed an attack by hundreds of militants in South Waziristan, inflicting heavy casualties, officials said. The attack came hours after thousands of armed tribesmen met at Wana on January 9, vowing to organise a lashkar to hunt down al Qaeda-linked militants blamed for killing eight of their kinsmen. “Around 250-300 miscreants concentrated and attempted to attack Ladha Fort and Ladha checkpost on the night of January 9 to 10,” chief military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told AFP. He said the security forces retaliated with artillery and small arms fire, adding, “The miscreants were forced to retreat and reportedly suffered heavy casualties.”

Military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told Daily Times, "It was an ambush on a paramilitary convoy." The convoy was reportedly ambushed while traveling from Gath to Ghalanai. Security forces later targeted the Safi sub-division. Tribal sources said no casualties were reported. "Locals also joined the soldiers against the militants, destroying two vehicles," Arshad added. Hundreds of militants captured a paramilitary fort in South Waziristan on January 15-night after killing 22 soldiers and taking several others hostage, according to Dawn. 600 to 700 militants reportedly attacked the fort in Sararogha, manned by the South Waziristan Scouts, at around 9pm on January 15, firing rockets and mortars. 38 paramilitary soldiers and six civilians were in the fort when it came under the assault. "Soldiers put up a good fight, but couldn’t hold out for long in the face of an overwhelming militant force," a source said. The last distress radio message, according to him, was made at around 3am to the Ludda Fort, asking for artillery fire at the militants who had broken through the defences and begun pouring into the base. The military said on January 16 that 40 militants were killed in the gun battle. While 15 soldiers escaped and reached the Jandola Fort, the fate of the rest was not known, it stated.

Security forces claimed to have killed about 90 militants in two different encounters in the Ladha area of South Waziristan on January 18, according to The Post. According to Dawn, in the first incident, militants attacked a convoy on the Jandola-Wana road in Chagmalai at 12.30pm. Troops returned fire and between 20 and 30 assailants were killed. Four security force personnel were injured and two vehicles were damaged. Further, security forces attacked a large number of militants who had gathered to attack the Laddah fort and killed up to 60 of them, the military said. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbass said "Our soldiers have bravely guarded the Ladha Fort. They were attacked from mountain tops but they retaliated with heavy weaponry including artillery, killing about 90 insurgents," he stated. He added that the SFs suffered no casualties. However, Taliban sources have dismissed the government claim and described the reports about the casualties on the part of Taliban as part of the propaganda to boost-up what they called as the shattered morale of the security forces.

Troops arrested 50 Islamist militants in an operation in South Waziristan, a day after killing dozens of militants in the area, the military said on January 19, Daily Times reported. Troops also recovered 10 bodies of the militants from the Chaghmalai area in South Waziristan, which witnessed a major clash on January 18 in which an estimated 30 militants were killed, chief military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said. “Security forces launched an operation in the Chaghmalai area last night and captured 40 militants,” he told AFP. “The village has been completely cleared of the militants,” he added. Security forces also launched a search operation in the Ladah town and arrested 10 militants, including some of their local commanders, the spokesman said. The clash in Chaghmalai erupted after militants ambushed a convoy of security forces with rockets and small arms. The military said an hour-long encounter in the area left 20 to 30 militants dead and four soldiers wounded.

There were also unconfirmed reports that Qari Hussain was killed in a gun-battle with the SFs in Kotkai. The troops based in Jandola Frontier Corps Fort in South Waziristan and Razmak military camp in North Waziristan started heavy mortar and artillery shelling on militants’ positions after the sunset. According to army sources, clashes were continuing in the Tor Chappar, Tora China, Bostikhel, Sheraki, Kotal hills and Akhorwal areas. Darra Adamkhel administrator Kamran Zeb told Dawn that the top priority of the army was to secure the Friendship Tunnel and the troops would move towards the tunnel once it was cleared. The militants were going to the tunnel in small groups and firing on troops, he said. A jirga (council) and tribal elders continued their efforts to persuade the militants to hand over the ammunition trucks they had seized and vacate the area immediately. “Six attempts have been made through the jirga to broker a peace deal with the militants but they seem to be sticking to their stance. Now the only way is to teach them a lesson and the militants will be wiped out from the area in two to three days. The operation will continue till the entire Darra Adamkhel area is cleared of militants,” Zeb stated.

Security forces took positions on hilltops around the town of Darra Adamkhel and the Friendship Tunnel on January 27 as 24 militants and five soldiers were killed in clashes, according to Dawn. Sources said firing continued near the tunnel on January 26-night and several blasts were heard in the city. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said security forces (SFs) had cleared the area and regained control of the Kohat tunnel and adjoining areas after fierce fighting. The tunnel connects the southern parts of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) with capital Peshawar through the Indus Highway. The ISPR claimed that 24 militants had been killed and many others had fled leaving arms and ammunition.

According to The News, kidnappers freed more than 250 students and teachers unharmed after being given safe passage by the authorities on January 28 from a school in the Bannu district of NWFP where they were holding the hostages. Though the government insisted that the kidnappers were a gang of criminals, reports indicated that some of them were suspected militants. One of the kidnappers, Gul Jamil, who was killed in the shoot-out with police, was stated to be a militant belonging to the Karak district. Groups of militants have reportedly been active in recent months in both the Karak and Bannu districts. They have been blamed for some of the kidnappings in the two districts. About eight militants, who had abducted a senior health official, Dr Hussain Jan, and his driver in Karak, took the children and teachers hostage in the high school of Walizar Kallay in the Domel area of Bannu, Dawn reported. One of the kidnappers was killed during an exchange of fire with police. The militants released the kidnapped men and entered the school. They held the students and teachers at gunpoint to avert a police action. Sources said that local elders, including former legislators Qari Gul Azeem and Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz, held negotiations with the militants for the release of the students and teachers. The six-hour standoff ended when the elders persuaded police officers to avoid an armed action and provide safe passage to the gunmen. "They (hostage-takers) were armed with dynamite, hand-grenades, Kalashnikov rifles and other explosive material," Aziz told AFP. He added that "During negotiations they repeatedly warned they would kill the children and blow up themselves if they were not allowed safe passage."

Security forces on February 11 captured Taliban commander Mullah Mansoor Dadullah along with five other Taliban militants after a gun-battle in the Gowal Ismailzai village of Qila Saifullah district (near the Afghan border) in Balochistan, according to Dawn. He is the younger brother of Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah, who was killed in a clash with the US-led forces in Afghanistan’s Helmand province in May 2007. "Mansoor Dadullah is alive, but he is injured and in the custody of the authorities along with five other Taliban who too have received injuries," caretaker Interior Minister Lt-Gen (retd) Hamid Nawaz said. A senior military official told AP that Dadullah died of his wounds on the way to hospital, but army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas denied the claim, Daily Times reported. Lieutenant Colonel David Accetta, the top US military spokesman in Afghanistan, said he could not confirm the report. Mullah Mansoor succeeded his brother as commander, but was removed from the post, and subsequently from the Taliban movement itself, after some time following differences with Mullah Omar. He was later arrested by the Afghan government, but released in a swap when Taliban abducted 30 people, including an Italian journalist.

According to The News, at least 10 people were killed and six others injured when dozens of armed men belonging to the Khyber Agency-based Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) attacked Shiekhan village on the outskirts of Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) with rocket launchers and other sophisticated weapons before bulldozing a shrine and four houses on March 3. Some sources put the death toll at 16 and said 15 of the deceased were villagers. Police had to fire teargas shells to disperse hundreds of angry villagers who blocked the main Bara Road to register their protest against the LeI militants. "Dozens of armed men of Mangal Bagh-led militant organisation attacked Shiekhan village at around 11.30 am. The villagers, mostly unarmed and unprepared, resisted the assault that resulted into a fierce clash between the rival groups," said a police official. While the militants used rockets and mortar shells besides machineguns and AK-47 assault rifles, the villagers retaliated with rifles. The heavy fighting that continued for hours restricted hundreds of villagers in the nearby areas to their houses. Students in the local schools were also confined to their institutions. Before fleeing to their stronghold Bara in the Khyber Agency of FATA, the LeI militants bulldozed four houses and set ablaze a shrine after razing its building. The Mangal Bagh-led LeI group had reportedly warned the villagers against the stay of a saint, Pir Abdul Hakeem, in the Dani Baba Shrine. The saint is among six people, including a woman, who sustained injuries in the attack. The attack is the first by LeI in the settled part of Peshawar. Mangal Bagh, the head of the LeI, has been enforcing his own brand of Islam in his areas for about two years, according to Dawn. Locals told Daily Times that Shiekhan is home to supporters of Pir Saifur Rehman, who was expelled from Bara in 2007 under immense pressure from the LeI.

According to Daily Times, at least 20 persons were killed as fighting erupted between activists of the militant group Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and Kooki Khel tribesmen of the Khyber Agency in FATA on April 16. "The two sides have started an exchange of fire," Rasool Khan, Assistant Political Agent of the Jamrud subdivision, confirmed to Daily Times. A tribal elder from Jamrud claimed that the Government had done nothing to avert the clash, despite knowing of hostilities on both sides. Tensions in the Jamrud subdivision surfaced after Kooki Khel tribe refused to surrender to the 30-point agenda of LI. The groups are reported to have targeted each other's positions in the hills using rockets and mortar shells, Geo News channel reported. LI is lead by cleric Mangal Bagh, who follows the puritanical Deobandi form of Sunni Islam. He has reportedly attempted to enforce a strict Taliban-style Islam in the region, provoking the tribesmen. "We can’t implement the Mangal Bagh brand of Islam on ourselves and our people," elders from the Katya Khel sub-tribe of the Kooki Khel tribe, gathered at a meeting, told Daily Times on April 15. They said they were "as much Muslims as Mangal Bagh and his men," adding, "He should not teach us Islam." Representing the sub-tribe Haji Shamshad, Haji Muhammad Ashraf, and Haji Sarfaraz said they were being asked to hoist black flags on their houses and surrender before the LI cadres. "All their demands are absurd as we’ve already taken action against those involved in smuggling, the hashish trade, kidnappings for ransom, and murders," they said.

According to the BBC, there were also reports of people fleeing certain parts of South Waziristan after the attack. However, a spokesman for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) alleged that the first shot had been fired by the troops. 48 militants, including a commander, and five soldiers were killed and an unspecified number of people were injured as fierce clashes continued in the Swat Valley of the NWFP for the second consecutive day on July 30, The News reported. The fighting erupted on July 29 after the militants attacked a security post in their stronghold in the Matta sub-division and took about 25 security force (SF) personnel hostage. After the overnight targeting of various militants’ positions, the SFs, backed by gunship helicopters, carried out an operation and shelled suspected militant positions in several parts of the valley, including Peuchar, Namal, Ronial, Sarbanda and Chuprial that left 48 persons dead and as many injured. The Taliban militants also claimed killing 25 SF personnel, but the claim could not be confirmed independently. A military spokesman said in the daylong clashes with the militants, one officer, a junior officer and three soldiers were killed. The two sides clashed in the Sijbanr area of Matta in which, according to the military spokesman, approximately 25 militants were killed. In the Sarbanda area of Matta, hundreds of militants attacked the troops and claimed killing 30 SF personnel. The claim was rejected by the military, which said that only two officers and three soldiers were killed in the attack. Further, SFs also killed 12 militants and injured several others when they attacked the militants, who had laid siege to the Matta police station. The militants targeted the Wenai check-post with rockets and one militant was killed when the troops retaliated. Backed by gunship helicopters, the SFs also attacked suspected positions of the militants in the mountainous area of Peuchar, killing ‘commander’ Maulvi Hussain Ali alias Tor Mulla and 10 others. The attack also left six militants, including commander Nisar, injured. In the Jura area of Matta, shelling by the Army gunship helicopters injured 13 people. In the Shangwatai area of Matta, two persons were killed as the peach orchard, they were working in, was targeted by military gunship helicopters. In addition, approximately 24 mortar shells landed in Nihag Darra area on the Swat-Dir border injuring two persons. The militants also blew up a Government hotel in Malam Jabba, which they had torched earlier, and an Army rest house in the Charbagh sub-division. They also blew up a Government girls’ school in Gulibagh and bridges in the Gurra, Ronial and other areas of Matta. The local military officials said curfew across the Swat Valley would remain in place till further notice. The militants also blocked roads in Kabal sub-division, Chota Kalam, Ningwalai and other mountainous areas with huge boulders and tree trunks suspending traffic on the Matta-Mingora road. Muslim Khan, spokesman for the local Taliban, told Associated Press that only five militants had been killed in the clashes and claimed that they had killed more than 30 soldiers. "The morale of our Taliban is high and security forces are retreating in several areas," he claimed. He said the militants were fighting in self-defence and blamed the Government for "not honouring" the May 2008 peace agreement. "If the Government doesn’t announce a formal end to this deal, neither will we," Khan said. Talks, for the moment, were out of question, he added.

Seven militants were reportedly wounded when security forces retaliated, local administration officials said. The attack on the fort came hours after NATO forces – in an operation co-ordinated with Pakistani forces – "fired multiple artillery rounds into Pakistan," the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) statement said. "The Pakistan military confirmed insurgents were preparing to fire rockets at an ISAF base in Paktika province… Pakistan (military) officers relayed that all rounds were on target, with no civilian casualties," the ISAF statement received in Peshawar via email said.

Ten army soldiers, seven policemen, 50 militants and a number of civilians were killed in a suicide attack on a police station and the subsequent military operation in Swat on August 23, Dawn reported. A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden jeep into the Charbagh police station at 7.45am (PST), killing four policemen and three civilians. 20 others were wounded. About 100kg of explosives were reportedly used in the attack. Military spokesman in Swat, Major Nasir Ali, told Dawn that soon after the suicide attack, security forces (SFs), backed by helicopter gunships, targeted militants’ hideouts in the valley, killing 50 Taliban militants, including their top commanders and foreigners. Ten army soldiers were killed and seven others injured in the fighting and three army vehicles were damaged. Several militant hideouts, including their command and control centre in Kabal, were destroyed. Major Nasir said the operation would continue till all objectives were achieved and the government’s writ was restored. However, the Taliban dismissed the military version, claiming in turn that they had killed 33 SF personnel. Spokesman Muslim Khan said that the Taliban had carried out the suicide attack in reaction to the killing of 14 militants in Doaba in the Hangu district on August 22. He said, “It is only a beginning and more attacks will come if the operation is not stopped in Swat.”

At least 23 Taliban militants and two soldiers were killed, while 20 militants and seven soldiers were injured on August 27 after clashes broke out in different areas of South Waziristan, Dawn reported. Sources said that the Taliban attacked a check-post in Tiarza, three kilometers off Wana on August 26-night. The security forces (SFs) countered the attack, killing 11 militants and injuring 20 others. Fierce fighting between the two sides reportedly continued throughout August 27. Two soldiers were killed and seven others sustained injuries when the Taliban attacked three army vehicles near Wana bazaar in the evening. Fighting was intensified in different areas after the attack on the army convoy. Sources added that 12 more militants were killed in the clashes. Further, a woman and a man were killed after a mortar shell hit their house. Militant commander Maulvi Nazir has denied that the Taliban were involved in the attack on the Tiarza check-post. He suspected that Meshud tribesmen might be involved in the attack as the check-post was on the border between the areas of Wazir and Mehsud tribes. Ahmadullah Ahmadi, a spokesman for the militant group of Hafiz Gul Bahadar and Maulvi Nazir, said that the Taliban had declared a unilateral cease-fire till August 30 in the tribal area. He said that they would not violate the truce without provocation.

The Frontier Corps (FC) said on November 16 that it killed one terrorist and injured three others in the Awaran district after they opened fire on a convoy of the visiting commandant of the Kalat Scouts, according to Daily Times. The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attempted ambush, and a former chairman of the Baloch Students’ Organization (BSO) has been named in a case registered by police. The convoy of Colonel Khalilur Rehman of Kalat Scouts was visiting Mashky area – where an FC team was ambushed on November 14 – and was returning to Khuzdar when it came under attack around 9am in Jabri area, 40 kilometers north-west of Mashky sub-division. “The attack was carried out from a white van with the licence number plate QAF-257,” FC spokesman Shahid Mahmmod Khan said, adding that troops retaliated by firing in the direction of the van, killing Noor Mohammad and injuring three others, who are now in FC custody. The FC official added that they seized hand grenades and other weapons. The BLA is reported to have claimed responsibility for the attack. Spokesman Bibarg Baloch told Daily Times that the Pakistan Army had launched a new search operation in the Mand and Mashky areas of Balochistan, which had resulted in the arrest of several ‘innocent people’. He said the attack on the FC had been launched in ‘self-defence’ against the operation. “We have killed seven army personnel in a fight,” claimed the BLA spokesman, and said that two other soldiers were killed after a rocket was fired on their convoy.
