Nicholas Pahan (30), an area commander of People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a breakaway faction of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI Maoist), was killed in an encounter with security forces at Kunjla village under Murhu police station in Khunti District, in the wee hours on April 10, reports The Times of India. Pahan was in-charge of PLFI activities in Murhu, Torpa and Khunti blocks from where he collected levies from contractors to fund the outfit's war against the State. A close aide of PLFI top leader Jidan Gudiya, Pahan had succeeded Murhu-Torpa-Khunti area commander Shiv Gudiya around one year ago when he was killed in an encounter. A source said Police had gathered intelligence that Pahan with his men was supposed to come to Kunjla village on April 9 night to kill a villager PLFI considered police informer. "A police team raided the village and encircled Pahan, who was with six armed men, before he could reach his target. He opened fire on policemen when they asked him to surrender. In retaliatory fire Pahan was killed while his men escaped," Police claimed. Police arrested one of the extremists who laid down arms during the gun-battle. A police search party found four pistols and a huge cache of live cartridges at the site later.

On August 14, one person, Pankaj Gadhai (resident of Odisha) was arrested by Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) of Crime Investigation Department (CID) from Jorabagan in Kolkata, and with his revelation, on August 15 afternoon, CID recovered 600 kilogram of ammonium nitrate along with another 500 kilogram of Sulphur and 20 kilogram of aluminum nitrate from 54 Strand Road in Kolkata, reports The Times of India. The fact that this huge stack was locked inside a go-down even as the city went in to a high-alert for Independence Day has not gone well in the security establishment. "By the looks of it, the entire modus operandi is tried and tested and up and running for several months. We are investigating this aspect closely," said a source. The go-down belongs to one Susanta Pakhira, who too is a resident of Odisha. According to CID sleuths, the recovery has direct connection with the Raghunathganj explosives haul that took place on August 8. The CID has so far claimed that the explosives used to arrive at the Kolkata go-down from designated areas of Odisha. Sometimes, they added, the raw material consignments arrived from Bihar. The explosives were then sent to several areas in Murshidabad District like Domkal and Suti from where the bombs would be made. These consignments sometimes were sent either through trucks or even the local train network. Once the bombs were manufactured, they were pushed back in to Kolkata and the Barrackpore Industrial belt. Sleuths believe a portion of it was sneaked even in to neighbouring Bangladesh. Sources said the quality of the material, the route and the transport mechanism similarity with that of October 2, 2014, Bardhaman Khagragarh blast.

Around 100 kilogram of explosive material was seized from a vehicle near India-Bangladesh border in Murshidabad District's Suti area and the two carriers, identified as Akhtar Sheikh and Rafiqul Islam were arrested on August 8, reports The Times of India. The seizure comes at a time when intelligence agencies have warned of a possible terror attack on or before August 15. Police have sent the explosive, a white crystalline powder for tests. Police believe the explosives had originated in Suti, which is a hub of country bomb units and illegal cracker factories.

Senjan N Arengh, the self-style chairman and Timudh D Marak, the ‘commander-in-chief (C-in-C)’ of the A'chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) along with a juvenile cadre formally surrendered before the Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Mehta in Shillong on December 9, reports The Sentinel. The duo deposited one AK 47, a barreta pistol, two AK magazines, two 9mm barreta magazines, one .36 High Explosive grenade, two 9 mm live rounds, sixty-nine bullets of 7.62 mm, thirty-five live rounds of 303 and six seals of the AMEF. The AMEF was formed by Ex- Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) deserter and ex- A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) ‘finance secretary’ Jack Marak who was killed in an encounter on the May 1, last. Following his death, Timudh D Marak took over the mantle along with Sengjan Arengh before facing the heat of the Police operations and public pressure for indulging in abductions and extortions in part of North Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills District. Talking to reporters after the formal surrendering ceremony, the surrendered leaders of the militant outfit said that Police operations that led to arrest and killings, surrenders besides desertion by the cadres prompted them to abandon the path of violence. Interestingly, the disclosure made by the two leaders clearly indicated that there is no more centralized command within the outfit. “There are at least three groups functioning on their own respective way before we came out,” stated Senjan Arengh while denying of having any role in ordering the series of abduction for ransom in the recent past. Even as he divulged that there are thirty odd cadres with unknown number of weapons functioning under three different leaders, the surrendered AMEF militants term the money for sustaining themselves as goodwill donation of some businessmen. They were part of all the strategies till the Police tactical operations forced them to come unconditionally come over ground, stated a well place police official who was involved in forcing these two self style leaders come over ground. DGP Rajeev said, “Its public pressure that added to the quantum of our efforts and it’s a matter of time that the other AMEF cadres will come over ground”.
