Police busted a militant module of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and arrested three militant associates of JeM in Pulwama District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on April 1, reports Daily Excelsior. One AK rifle, three magazines, 69 AK rounds, and one grenade were also recovered from their possession. The Police, in a press release, informed that the three militant associates were providing logistical support to militants in the district. “The trio were working for JeM outfit and were providing logistic and transportations to terrorists in the district,” the release read. The accused have been identified as Owais Altaf, Aqib Manzoor, and Waseem Ahmad Pandit. A case (FIR number 77/2022) was registered in Police Station Pulwama under relevant Sections of law.

Police recovered arms and ammunition from a car the driver of which fled at a checkpoint established by the SFs in Mehmodabad Dooru area of Anantnag District in the night of April 11, reports Greater Kashmir. “A team of Anantnag police was on night domination near Mehmodabad Dooru. A vehicle coming from opposite direction stopped on seeing the Police party. This raised suspicion and Police team fired some rounds in air. Police busted two militant modules of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and arrested five associates of LeT in Bandipora District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on April 3, reports Daily Excelsior. A Police spokesman said that militant associates identified as Irfan Ahmad Bhat of Ashtango, Sajad Ahmad Mir, Shariq Ahmad Mir, both from Arin and Irfan Ahmad Jan of Qazipora Bandipora were arrested by the Security Forces. Three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were arrested by the Security Forces (SFs) in Wadoora area of Baramulla District on April 11, reports Daily Excelsior. A Police official said that based on a specific information regarding movement of three suspected individuals from Wadoora Bala to Sonarwain bridge, who were likely to carryout attack on SFs, a joint Naka was established at Sonarwain bridge near Wadoora Bala village. He said that during the checking at the naka, it was observed that three persons were moving towards naka in suspicious conditions. The naka party challenged them, however, they tried to flee from the spot, taking cover of darkness but, were nabbed by the SFs. “Upon their search, three pistols, three magazines, 22 rounds of pistols, one grenade and Rs 79,800 cash were recovered from their possession”, he added. The arrested militants were identified as Tufail Ahmad Mir son of Abdul Majeed Mir of Gund Mohalla, Barat Kalan; Owais Ahmad Mir son of Ghulam Hassan Mir of Mir Mohalla, Barat Kalan and Shabir Ahmad Wagay son of Nazir Ahmad Wagay of Masjid Mohalla, Pethbug. The preliminary investigation revealed that they are affiliated to LeT.

Police said that they along with 15RR of Army at a checkpoint established at Sonmullah Crossing intercepted a suspicious person who on seeing joint naka party tried to flee from the spot but the alert party apprehended him tactfully. He was identified as Bashir Ahmad Kumar son of Abdul Raheem Kumar, resident of Lilum Vilgam in Handwara. “During his personal search, incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including one Chinese pistol, two pistol magazines, 13 live rounds of 9 mm and a mobile phone were recovered from his possession”, Police said.

The Intelligence Wing of the Punjab Police on April 18 arrested two close aides of fugitive gangster-turned-militant Arshdeep Singh alias Arsh Dalla in an intelligence-led operation by a team from the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) in Amritsar District of Punjab, reports republicworld.com. Those arrested have been identified as Harsh Kumar and his aide Raghav, both residents of Kot Ise Khan in Moga District. The Police have also recovered a foreign-made MP-5 gun along with 44 live rounds from their possession. During investigations, Harsh revealed that he came into contact with Arsh Dalla via Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi of Shadiwala village in Moga, who was arrested by Moga Police in January 2022 with a consignment of grenades and arms. Dalla, a native of Moga and now based in Canada, is a very active gangster-turned-militant and has been involved in numerous gangster and militant-related activities in the recent past.

The module, run by Harvinder Singh alias Rinda, was busted with the arrest of three of its operatives, Director General of Police (DGP), V K Bhawra said. On the intervening night of November 7 and 8, 2021, unidentified assailants had hurled a hand grenade at the CIA office in Nawanshahr with the intention to kill Police officials. However, the officials present at the office had escaped unhurt. Those arrested have been identified as Manish Kumar alias Mani alias Baba, a resident of Bains village in Nawanshahr, Ramandeep Singh alias Jakhu of Atta village in Jalandhar’s Goraya and Pardeep Singh alias Bhatti of Sahlon village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh (SBS) Nagar, according to a statement issued by Police. Police have also seized a live hand grenade from the possession of the accused, the statement said. “During interrogation, Ramandeep confessed that he, along with Manish, had thrown the hand grenade at the Nawanshahr CIA office on the directions of Harvinder Singh alias Rinda,” the DGP said, adding that Ramandeep had picked up two hand grenades from a location on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur Road, as guided by Rinda.

Accordingly, he was brought before the court on production from Kot Bhalwal jail and subsequently police remand was taken. During his sustained questioning, the accused admitted his role in the Arnia weapon drop case and also disclosed two locations where the arms and ammunition dropped by drone had been buried or concealed, ADGP said. As a part of investigation, ADGP Mukesh Singh said, “A police team, along with a concerned magistrate in order to recover the weapons, went to the spots one after another.” “Though no recovery was made at the first place but at the second place namely Toph village (near International Border) in Phallian Mandal area, a packet of arms, ammunition and explosives was recovered,” he added. ADGP Mukesh Singh said, “When the packet was being opened, the accused attacked one of the police officials and snatched his service rifle. He fired at the police party and tried to flee from the spot. Based on reliable input about the Maoist camp in a forest area under Gochhapada Police Station, a joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) carried out the joint combing operation, and during the course of operation, the team found some Maoist articles which were dumped in a cave near Sumangi village under Gochhapada Police limits on August 17. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar Range, Sundarraj P said, the operation, involving personnel from the Police’s District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was launched on August 7, following intelligence about the presence of the Maoists’ Madded Area Committee ‘divisional commander’ Nagesh in the area. The gunfight broke out after the extremists opened fire on approaching Security Force (SF) personnel, who were undertaking a search operation in the jungle. However, the Maoists managed to escape through the dense forest. Soon after the explosion, Maoists, who were hiding in the area started firing at the team. In response to the same, the SFs responded to the firing, forcing Maoists to flee. On December 22, Security Forces (SFs) arrested three terrorist associates, identified as Abdul Rouf Malik and Altaf Ahmad Payer of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), (the identity of the third person is not yet disclosed) and recovered arms and ammunition in Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). During questioning, two hideouts constructed on the instructions of a Pakistan-based terrorist handler named Farooq Ahmad Pir alias Nadeem Usmani were revealed, with the recovery of one AK rifle, two AK magazines, 119 AK rounds, one pistol, one pistol mag, four pistol rounds, six hand grenades, one Improvised Explosive Device (IED), two detonators, two wire bundles, and one water tank of approximately 100 liters capacity from the hideouts, reports Daily Excelsior. The terrorists also received INR 600,000 in cash in June 2022, which was intended to purchase materials for the construction of hideouts and procuring of arms and ammunition. A total of INR 64,000 has been recovered the police. Two more terrorists, identified as Abdul Majeed Beigh and another (name undisclosed), have been detained for investigation. The terrorist associates were also being supervised by another handler called Fayaz Geelani, who is currently located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The Police said the encounter took place during an anti-Maoist operation undertaken jointly by SFs of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. Bilaspur, Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjneya Varshney said, “The location of the encounter is said to be around 10 km from Maharashtra border. One woman and one man were killed. Another Maoist, who was injured in the encounter, was captured alive and we are questioning him. We have recovered three weapons – two SLRs [Self Loading Rifles] and another firearm. No one from our team suffered injury.” While the male Maoist killed in the operation is yet to be identified, the woman Maoist was later identified as Kanthi Lingavva alias Anitha (41), from Laxmi Sagar village in Kaddampeddur Mandal (administrative sub division) in Nirmal District of Telangana. She had a bounty of INR 1.6 million on her arrest from Maharashtra and another bounty of INR 500,000 from Telangana. She worked as a ‘Divisional Committee Member (DCM)’ and ‘Assistant Commander’ of Kumram Bheem Divisional Committee (KBDC). She had joined the party after being attracted to ideologies of the outfit 15 years ago. According to the Police, she is the wife of Mylarapu Adellu alias Bhashkar, a member of the Telangana State Committee and ‘secretary’ of KBDC of the Maoists. Mylarapu, who has a bounty of more than INR 2 million for his arrest, was at the spot and managed to escape, the Police said. The injured Maoist, identified as Lachhmayya Kuchha Weladi (28), from Tekameta in Bijapur, was arrested and taken into custody.

During the early hours of Monday, 26 Dec 2022, a Pakistani Fishing Boat Al Soheli was observed moving suspiciously in Indian waters”. Basing on intelligence inputs, Kandhamal, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet Agarwal led a coordinated combing operation in the area when all of a sudden, the Maoists opened fire at the SFs. In retaliation the Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel too fired and gunned down two Maoists, Inspector General (IG) Satyabrata Bhoi said, adding, the others however escaped taking advantage of the dense forests. Bodies of two female cadres of the banned CPI-Maoist in uniform were recovered from the site. Bharathi and others were inspired by the surrendered ‘DCM’ Sudheer and were active in the Andhra Odisha Border (AOB). The other armed militia members are Pangi Pulu alias Pangi Nagesh (36) who was involved in nine offenses including five murders, three exchange of fire, and also arson cases. Pangi Prasad (37), Boribori Krishna Rao (29), Boribori Lakshmayya (47), Gollluri Sundara Rao (27), Korra Appa Rao (28), Killo Krishna Rao (43), and others. Most of them are involved in an exchange of fire incidents or killings or arsons and served as armed ‘militia’ or members of Rythu Collie Sangham (RCS) used to gather public for Maoists party meetings and provide food to Maoist squads, besides helping in blasting.

He was interrogated and he informed that a rifle was kept in the Lajidam Forest area of Keredari for the purpose of harming the police team during military action and camp in the forest. Two troopers of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) Battalion were injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion triggered by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres during a combing operation in Bulbul Forest in Lohardaga District of Jharkhand on February 11, reports tv9hindi.com. An encounter took place between the squad of Ravindra Ganjhu, the ‘regional commander’ of CPI-Maoist, carrying reward of 1.5 million, and the SFs on February 10. During the combing operation, an IED kept hidden in the forest exploded as soon as the soldiers kept their feet, in which both the CoBRA troopers identified as Dilip Kumar (29) and Narayan Das (38) were injured. Later on, the Maoists fled after seeing the Security Forces (SFs) overwhelmed. Superintendent of Police Ajay Linda said some of their sympathisers, too, have been taken into custody. He added that a former mukhiya (village headman) was among the sympathisers, who was given the responsibility of inviting Nayak to a football match in Jheelruwa on January 4, while two other locals, Pradhan Koda and Pusa Lugun, were told to keep a tab on Police movement. During search operation in follow up to the IED recovered in Ghazipur on January 14, a suspicious sealed pack, later confirmed to be IED, was found in the bag from the second floor of the house in Seemapuri. The owner of the house named Kasim had given the second floor of his house on rent to four boys. They all fled from the house before the Police raid leaving the IED bag behind. It is being suspected that the tenants in the house had connections with the Ghazipur RDX case. Further investigation is going on.

One Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) and a pistol, earlier looted from the SF personnel, were recovered from the encounter spot. The slain Maoists were identified as Jagdish Koda and Birendra Koda, who were evading arrest in connection with Maoist related incidents. Following a tip-off about a congregation of Maoists combing operation was launched in Lathia Forest, and armed Maoists started opening fire on seeing the SFs proceeding towards their hideouts. Among the arrested persons are ‘zonal commander’ Balram Oraon, an accused in 82 cases, ‘sub-zonal commander’ Dashrath Singh Kherwar, ‘area commander’ Markush Nagesia and members Shaileshwar Oraon, Mukesh Korba, Viren Korba, Shailendra Nagesia, Sanjay Nagesia, and Sheela Kherwar. Kherwar and Nagesia are wanted in seven and 10 extremists related cases respectively, while others are accused persons in two cases each. During the operation, the longest in recent years, which is against the Maoist squad led by ‘regional commander’ Ravindra Ganjhu, the Police have exchanged fire with the Maoists on 10 occasions, busted their bunkers and also killed one extremist. Police have recovered four weapons, including an American automatic rifle and a carbine, around 1,700 cartridges, 16 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), codex wire, wireless sets, safety fuse and several electronic items, Rs 3.27 lakh cash and daily use articles like dress and shoes. On the basis of inputs regarding drone activity and dropping of arms and ammunition by Pakistan based militant outfits Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) / The Resistance Force (TRF) on the behest of ISI in RS Pura, Arnia area, special search operation was launched by Police including Special Operation Group (SOG). “During the search operation three boxes of the arms ammunition which were dropped through drone during night hours were recovered by the search party from the Treva village of Arnia/R.S. Jammu Kashmir Police (JKP) arrested three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants and one militant associate in separate operations from Budgam and Baramulla Districts of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on February 24, reports Daily Excelsior. Acting on specific information about the presence of militants in the Aarath area in Budgam District, the JKP along with 2 RR (Rashtriya Rifles) arrested an active LeT militant identified as Yasir Mushtaq, and a militant associate identified as Irfan Bashir, both residents of Allahpora Budgam. Incriminating materials of proscribed terror outfit LeT, arms and ammunition including one Chinese grenade, one AK Magazine and 30 AK rounds were recovered from their possession. Investigation revealed that Yasir had joined terror folds recently and Irfan was providing the logistic support to him. In the second incident in Baramulla, JKP along with Army’s 32 RR, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) 53 Bn and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) 2nd Bn arrested two militants identified as Muzamil Ahmad and Mohammad Yaseen, both residents of Chakloo Baramulla. As per Police records, the duo was missing since February 16. On their disclosure, two Chinese Pistols, two Magazines and 12 Pistol rounds were recovered. Investigation revealed that Muzamil and Yaseen were in close contact with handlers of LeT across the border and on their directions, they left their homes on February 16 to join the terror outfit. It was also revealed that they were tasked to carry out an attack on the Police or Security Force and soft targets in the coming days.

Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants and a civilian were killed during an encounter in Amshipora village in Shopian District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on February 25, reports Daily Excelsior. Based on a specific input of Police about the presence of militants in village Amshipora, Shopian, a joint operation was launched in the intervening night of February 24 and 25, and after a cluster of houses were taken into cordon, following the drill civilians were evacuated to safety. Thereafter, house to house searches were started in the wee hours to locate the hiding militants. During the searches, the militants came out and resorted to indiscriminate firing, in which one civilian namely Shakeel Ahmed Khan son of Abdul Rahim Khan resident of Amshipora got seriously injured and later succumbed to the injuries. However, the fire by the militants was retaliated effectively in which both militants were killed, who have been identified as Muzamil Ahmad Mir, resident of Chatripora, Shopian, and Shariq Ayoob, resident of Bonpora, Amshipora, Shopian. As per Police records, Muzamil was involved in several militant crimes. “Both the slain militants belonged to LeT outfit, incriminating materials including arms (one AK 56 rifle and one pistol) and ammunition were also recovered”, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir zone, Vijay Kumar said.

The JJMP ‘area commander’ Arvind had created a reign of terror among the brick kiln operators, and it was a trans-border terror. Farmers who produce coarse grains on the river Sone’s dry land in Bihar were also required to pay the ‘levy’ (extortion money) to this JJMP rebel. Arvind is a renegade criminal who has worked as a Maoist, a dacoit, and a member of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee/Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TSPC/TPC), a CPI-Maoist splinter group, before joining the JJMP. He spent three years in Rajasthan’s Jaipur jail, but that did not make him a reasonable guy, according to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Palamu, Chandan Kumar Sinha. There are 15 cases against Arvind, and Police in Bihar and Jharkhand were looking for him. The six JJMP cadres had arrived in Jharkhand’s Palamu (Hussainabad) to extort money from a brick kiln operator but their plan was foiled by the SSB Bihar and the Jharkhand Palamu DAP. The recovered explosives included 175 kilograms of ammonium nitrate and several empty containers. Police have recovered explosives on the behest of two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, Dashrath and Markus, the ‘regional commander’ of the CPI-Maoist, taken on remand. During interrogation, the Maoists told the Police team that they had hidden ammonium nitrate and empty containers to prepare a huge amount of explosions to damage the Security Forces (SFs) in the Putar forest. The check point was established following inputs about "suspicious movement of TRF terrorists in Chandergeer Hajin". On February 7, Police arrested five associates of Kashmir Freedom Fighters (KFF), an offshoot of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), from Srigufwara area of Bijbehara in Anantnag District in Jammu and Kashmir, reports Daily Excelsior. Anantnag police received credible information that the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) is planning attacks on Police and Security Forces in Srigufwara area, an unnamed official said. “Multiple nakas and check-points were established at various locations. At one check point established at Sakhras crossing Srigufwara a bike having three persons on board was intercepted and they tried to flee but were apprehended by police”, he said. Two Chinese pistols along with magazine and ammunition was recovered from them. “[The arrestees] disclosed that they are the associates of JeM and have planned to attack police and security in Srigufwara area thereafter they will get formally inducted into the organisation. They further revealed that they are in direct contact with Pakistan based JeM handlers and at their behest they were going to attack police and then formally join the KFF an offshoot of JeM”, he added. Sources said an exchange of fire took place between the SF personnel and the ultras inside the forest last night (January 12), however, the Maoists later managed to fled the spot. Nuapada Police said, “Acting on Intelligence input regarding camping of a large number of CPI Maoists in dense forest area near Odisha-Chhattisgarh border to carry out various anti-security forces strategies and other subversive activities, an anti-Naxal operation was launched by combined security forces of SOG [Special Operations Group], DVF [District Voluntary Force] and CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] on January 7.” At around 8.45 am on January 9, when the commandos of SOG and DVF were conducting search operation in the forest area of Sunabeda Reserve Forest, around 50 to 60 armed Maoists opened indiscriminate fire at the security forces. The team retaliated in self-defense. Again on January 10, a combined team of SOG, DVF and CRPF was sent to that area for reinforcement, informed the cops. During search operation at about 9.45 am on January 12, armed Maoists again opened fire at the SFs and the latter retaliated, following which the Maoists fled the area. A huge quantity of explosives, suspected to be left behind by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was found in Malkangiri District of Odisha on January 14, reports India Today. During a combing operation in Swabhiman Anchal (erstwhile cut-off region) on the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border, personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) detected the dump of explosive materials in a forest near Maribeda and Nademanjari villages in Jodamba Police Station area, Superintendent of Police (SP), Nitesh Wadhwan said. Among the materials found were four tiffin bombs and 20 web belts, he said. Besides, 19 jungle caps and a large number of medicines were also found, he added. It is suspected that the Maoists fled the area, leaving behind the explosives, due to the combing operation, the officer said. "We are suspecting that these explosives belonged to Maoist cadres of AOBSZC (Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee) and were intended to be used against civilians and security forces," he said.

Police identified the arrested persons as Arafat Majeed Dar son of Abdul Majeed Dar resident of Harwan Sopore, Tauseef Ahmed Dar son of Late Gh Hassan Dar resident of Taliyan Mohalla, Arampora Sopore and Momin Nazir Khan son of Nazir Ahmed Khan resident of Arampora Sopore at present Natipora Srinagar. Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including two Pistols, two Pistol Magazines, 13 Pistol rounds and a hand grenade were recovered from their possession. “Preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested terrorist associates were providing logistical and other materialistic support to the terrorists. Accordingly, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Bomai and further investigation is going on,” Police added.
