Activists of the All Tiwa Protection Committee (ATPC), led by ‘general secretary’ Manak Chandra Bordoloi, staged a dharna [non-violent sit-in protest] on January 4 to demand dissolution of the present Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) and holding of elections in February 2015, reports The Sentinel.After the election of TAC was held for the first time in June, 2010, the council was supposed to take up development works but this did not happen due to the conspiracy of some leaders. Since development works are being hampered due to the ego–centrism of these leaders, the council should be dissolved and fresh polls to the council must be held, stated the press release.

Several Tangkhul women who were taking out a protest demonstration on February 9 in Kasom in Ukhrul District had a narrow escape when a pressure cooker bomb failed to explode while they were passing by, reports The Sentinel. One person happened to see a pressure cooker bomb, which failed to explode, on the roadside. The women were protesting the bomb blast, which happened on February 5 which killed one person and the gunfight between Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) and Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland NSCN-IM on February a place between Nambashi and Nambashi Khunou in Ukhrul. RPF stated that the NSCN-IM is never considered as an enemy but it would counter any threat to Manipuri's unity through tough political and military strategies, reports E-pao on February 10. According to a statement of RPF issued by its ‘publicity secretary’ Roben Khuman the outfit is always ready to have talks with NSCN-IM, if the later wants. He also stated that killing of one cadre and injuring of few other cadres of NSCN-IM at Nambasi was an unfortunate incident. He said that RPF was preparing to carry out an attack on AR, however SFs stayed back at Nambasi School compound and NSCN-IM militants came towards the hiding position of RPF.

Kuki activists have announced an economic blockade for five days with effect from February 18, in protest against the alleged failure of the Manipur State Government to disclose the report of the magisterial inquiry into the encounter on January 28 at Kadangband in Imphal West, reports The Hindu. On January 28, two Kuki National Front (KNF) militants were killed and three were wounded in a firing between AR and the militants. A hand gun was also recovered. However there has been protest as the activists said that it was not an encounter.

A forest guard and round officer were thrashed by senior Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres at Yedaskuhi village in Gadchiroli District to protest alleged corruption by their department, reports The Times of India on February 25. Senior Maoist cadre Vikas took an aggressive stance against foresters in the village in north Gadchiroli to convey their dissent against the department. Sources stated that the Maoists were trying to mount pressure on foresters and also on the local population for dominance during the forthcoming Tendu leaves picking season in the district which is a multi-crore seasonal industry. Maoists aim to collect substantial party funds from foresters, tendu contractors and transporters during this tendu season. The rebels also collect donations for the party from the tribal population who engages in picking tendu.

Protests and torching of effigies against the release of mastermind of street violence across the Kashmir valley in 2010, Masrat Alam Bhat held in Jammu region on March 9, reports Daily Excelsior. Hindustan Shiv Sena (HSS) led by National President Dimpy Kohli held a protest demonstration against the State Government for releasing separatist leader Masrat. Another protest demonstration was held by youth Congress in Jammu West led by Ricky Dalgotra, general secretary of Party for Jammu West against the release of Masrat Alam. The protestors torched the effigy of Prime Minister. Separately, a massive protest was held by Bar Association Kathua against the release of Masrat Alam. The protestors demanded his immediate re-arrest. In another incident, Dogra Front and Shiv Sena led by its President Ashok Gupta held a protest demonstration against the release Masrat Alam at Jammu. The protestors asked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to withdraw support to the Government and put an end to era of uncertainty in the State. Elsewhere, Jammu West Assembly Movement led by Sunil Dimple also held a protest demonstration against the release of Masrat Alam and torched the effigies of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-BJP.

The OSRTC incurs losses at least around INR 20.7 million in south Odisha because of its disruption of service due to bandhs (shut down strike) and protest observation calls by the Maoists. According to in-charge of the OSRTC Divisional Manager of Berhampur Division, Anil Mishra, due to threat of Maoist violence the corporation stops plying buses in such areas for at least 30 days every year.

Manipur is in flames again for the last two days after the intensification of the public agitation demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) to regulate influx of outsiders into the Northeastern border State, reports The Assam Tribune on August 17. 13 persons including higher secondary students, seven local club leaders launched a fast unto death agitation in Imphal demanding implementation of ILPS, after five other hunger strikers were picked up by the police on August 16. The agitators, mostly youths and womenfolk on August 17 blocked the roads by placing iron posts, boulder, burning tyres, in the afternoon, affecting normal life in greater Imphal area. Manipur has been witnessing series of public agitations spearheaded by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS), a conglomerate of 40 civil society organisations since the last more than one month, demanding the enforcement of the ILPS.

Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner Lunminthang Haokip said that on August 31, two persons died of bullet injuries, one was charred to death as the houses were set on fire and the fourth died in a road accident caused by road blocks. He, however, could not say who fired the shots. Minlan Gangte, information secretary of the Kuki Students Organisation, Churachandpur stated that "The amendment of the bill disturbs the rights of the tribal people. People are angry because our representatives did not speak for us when it was passed in the Assembly," He said the land law has not been extended to the hills till now and if it is extended to the hills it will disturb the tribal people's rights.

At least three dozen persons including 24 Policemen were injured in clashes in Pulwama town in Pulwama District on December 25; amid a shutdown against the killing of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant, reports Daily Excelsior. The District Administration had imposed curfew like restrictions in the town after apprehending protests against the killing of LeT militant, identified as Owais Ahmad Sheikh alias Hamza. Owais hurled a grenade on the troops when they challenged him and troops fired back killing him on the spot, during an encounter on December 24. Owais had reached Bandipora on December 19 to transport a group of five LeT militants from the Bandipora forests to South Kashmir. A senior Police officer said that at least 20 Policemen and 12 civilians were injured during clashes. “Police showed maximum restraint and patience during the clashes and did not use any lethal weapon on the protesters,” the officer said. An Army spokesman said one 9mm Chinese pistol, magazine and 8 rounds along with other war like stores were recovered from the sight of encounter. Owais, a student of Bachelor of Arts (BA) II year in Degree College Pulwama, had joined LeT in June this year after snatching weapon from Policemen deployed in the Pulwama District hospital. Owais was a resident of Chhaterpora locality of the town.
