The Odisha Police busted an ammunition dump suspected to have been used by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) for illegal manufacturing and repair of weapons in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected Malkangiri District, reports The Statesman on January 26. The Police said explosives and arms were seized from the ammunition dump site at Tulsi Pahad under Mathili Police limits in Malkangiri District. The dumped ammunition, including Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), was intended to target civilians and Police forces, said a senior Police official. “On the basis of specific information received, an intensive search and area domination was conducted by Malkangiri Police in Jajbhata area (Tulsi Pahad) between Kirmiti and Katuapadar villages, resulting in uncover of one major Maoist dump”, Police said.

Huge Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) dump was recovered during a combing operation by Security Forces (SFs) in Kalahandi District of Odisha on February 2, reports Kalinga TV. A team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was conducting a combing operation in Bhuruti Forest under Narla Police limits of the District, and during the raid, the SFs busted the Maoist camp and seized two guns and other items belonging to the red rebels. The seized items include one Bharmar, 11 Electric detonators, one Gun Power, one Maoist banner, Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] literature, Electric wire, one electric extension board, four batteries, two Mosquito nets, two Water bottles, one Black polythene, one Axe, two torchlights, one pair of Shoe, one pair of Slipper, Civil clothes and Medicines including syringes and needles. Following the discovery of this dump, security has been tightened and search intensified in the area and its periphery.

During an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation, Security Forces (SFs) unearthed a dump of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and recovered a huge quantity of explosive materials and other items from an area in Jantri Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) under Jodambo Police limits in Malkangiri District of Odisha on March 14, reports odishabytes.com. According to a Border Security Force (BSF) press release, the seized items included 14 detonators, seven gelatin sticks, four bundles of cordex wire, six batteries, electric wires, bundles of broken glass pieces wrapped in umbrella cloth, an empty tiffin box, and other items. Such items are used for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs). "The recovery of such Maoist items would certainly ensure safety and security for the security forces as well as the local populace in the region. Security personnel are also carrying out an operation to remove mines in Swabhiman Anchal, which was once a stronghold of Maoists," the press release added.

According to reports, the personnel of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) were carrying out a combing operation in the forest when Maoists opened fire at them, leading to an encounter that lasted for several hours. Sharing details about the encounter, Nabarangpur Superintendent of Police (SP) S Sushree said, “Two SOG [Special Operation Group] teams of Odisha police launched an anti-Maoist operation on Odisha-Chhattisgarh border. A gunfight broke out between the police personnel and 20-25 armed ultras during the operation which lasted for around half-an-hour.” No one was injured in the encounter, however, a huge cache of Maoist articles including Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were seized during the operation,” Sushree informed, adding that, “The Maoists were exploiting the women. At least three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed and one Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) sustained critical injuries in an encounter between Police personnel and the Maoists inside Taperenga-Ludengad Forest area under M. Rampur Police Station limits in Kalahandi District of Odisha on May 9 (today), reports odishatv.in. The combing operation was launched in the region in view of the week-long Maoist campaign as part of their strategy to regroup in the region. A search operation was conducted after the encounter and the bodies of three Maoists were recovered from the site, whose identities are yet to be established. One AK-47 assault rifle was also recovered, while combing operation has been stepped up in the area to ascertain if more Naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] are present.

Security Forces (SFs) averted a major attack by defusing an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in a forest area near Kichatpadar under Sadar Police limits in Kalahandi District of Odisha on May 15, reports pragativadi.com. The IED planted by Maoists on Bhawanipatna-Thuamul Rampur-Kashipur Road, which was blocked with felled trees, was defused by the SFs to clear the road. Maoist posters were also found at the spot. Maoists are suspected to have planted this landmine to target security personnel during their bandh (general shut down strike) call in Rayagada, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Boudh, Nayagarh and Gajapati Districts on May 15. The rebels had also released an audio tape regarding this bandh call. “A major incident was averted. Acting on intelligence inputs, personnel of the SOG carried out an operation in the area since May 23 night, the Police said. They came upon a Maoist camp in the forest where a group of 30 to 40 rebels started firing on the forces, ensuing an exchange of fire between the SOG and the Maoists for around half an hour. Superintendent of Police (SP) Subhendu Patra said some of the rebels may have been injured following the exchange of fire as security personnel found bloodstains near the spot. After the encounter, several items belonging to the Maoists, including firearms, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and detonators have been seized, after the Maoists fled from the encounter spot, the SP said.

Boudh Superintendent of Police (SP) Raj Prasad said a team of Special Operation Groups (SOG) had launched this search and combing operation on December 13. On December 14, an encounter took place (reported earlier by SATP) when Maoists opened fire and hurled bombs at the security personnel. Following the encounter incident, the combing operation in the area led to the recovery of 12 IEDs and a huge quantity of articles used by the Maoists from a deserted Maoist camp.
