Two tiffin bombs, suspected to have been planted by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were recovered in Sarguli area of Saraguli village at Raighar block in Nabarangpur District of Odisha on January 5, reports Orissa Diary. According to the report, a local youth while passing through the road in the said area noticed two suspected bombs laying on the roadside. Following which he informed the local Police, who rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. The bomb disposal squad of Border Security Force (BSF) arrived at the spot on the following day and took the two bombs to a secluded place and defused them.

The Security Forces (SFs) neutralised a camp of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) after an exchange of fire with Maoists in Rayagada District of Odisha on January 26, reports The Times of India. According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Saravana Vivek M., on receiving a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists at a road construction site in Niyamgiri forest, a joint team of SFs launched a combing operation in the area. On seeing the SFs, the Maoists detonated three Improvised Electronic Devices (IEDs). The SFs escaped the explosion and retaliated leading to a gun-battle and subsequently destroying the Maoist camp. No injuries were reported from both sides in the incident. The SFs seized a huge cache of ammunition and other material from the camp.

A huge quantity of explosives was recovered from a trader suspected to be linked with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Gopalpur village under Rambha Police Station limits in Ganjam District of Odishaon January 29, reports Hindustan Times. As per the report, on receiving a tip-off, a team Special Task Force (STF) raided the house of the trader identified as, Saroj Patnaik and recovered 196 quintals of ammonium nitrate, which had 99 per cent purity and was exclusively meant for industrial purposes, 3,200 gelatin sticks and 10,406 detonators. Following the recovery, the trader was arrested. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of STF, Jai Narayan Pankaj, said, “This is one of the largest hauls of explosives in recent times. Though the accused was apparently trying to sell the explosives to local quarry owners, we are trying to find out if the accused was in contact with Maoists. The seized materials can be ingredients for the landmines that Maoists assemble.”

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp was destroyed by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel during combing operations in a forest near Bhainsadani village under Boden Police Station limits in Nuapada District of Odisha on January 30, reports The Pioneer. The CRPF personnel recovered two pistols, 32 gelatin bombs, 27 detonators, bullets and gun powder from the spot. As per the report, acting on a tip-off that the Maoists had stockpiled arms and ammunition in the said camp, the 216 Battalion of CRPF personnel initiated a combing operation in the area following which they came across the rebel camp. The Maoists, however, managed to escape the spot after seeing the CRPF team.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp was busted by the personnel of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in a forest under Chandrapur Police limits in Rayagada District of Odisha on February 1, reports Pragativadi. According to sources, the CRPF personnel of the 8th Battalion were on a combing operation in Chandrapur forest in the District when they identified a camp near Andhra Pradesh-Odisha Border (AOB). Arms and ammunitions have been recovered from Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) hideouts over a recent period of time in joint operations by the Odisha Police, Border Security Force (BSF), CoBRA Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Andhra Pradesh Police in Swabhiman Anchal (earlier known as cutoff area) of Malkangiri District of Odisha, reports The Pioneer on February 8. The seizures include one light machine gun, three INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle, three carbine Sten guns, 1 Self Loading Rifle (SLR) rifle, a .303 rifle, one pistol, 202 rounds of 5.6 mm ammunition, 59 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, 42 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 4 Light Machine Gun (LMG) magazines, eight INSAS magazines, two SLR magazines, six carbine magazines, one 303 magazine, two VHF set cum scanner, one optical sight and a tiffin bomb along with explosive. This was one of the biggest counter-Leftwing extremist operations in the area that was underway to provide security cover for road construction in the region, which was opposed by the Maoists, informed Director General of Police (DGP), Abhay. “We suspect that the arms and ammunitions were hidden by Maoists of the Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC). Combing and area domination exercises have been intensified further in the region to recover more such Maoist hideouts, if any,” the DGP added.

Police busted a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp during a combing operation in forest near Ampabali village under Pottangi Police Station limits in Koraput District of Odisha on February 23, reports The Pioneer. Based on a tipoff about the movement of the Maoists in the region, a joint team of the District Voluntary Force (DVF), Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Border Security Force (BSF) had launched a combing operation in Panabadi, Kamalabandh, Bailguda and Urlapadu area in the District, bordering Andhra Pradesh. During the search operation, the joint team recovered a gun, a rifle, hand grenades, electronic detonators, bulletproof metal plate, and explosives along with several items used by the Maoists. The items were recovered from three drums which were buried under the earth. Police suspected that the camp was being used by the Nandpur Area Committee of Koraput Division of the CPI-Maoist.

A cadre of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was arrested along with explosives from Barabandha forest under Madanpur Rampur Police Station limits in Kalahandi District of Odisha on March 2, reports The Pioneer. The arrested cadre has been identified as Ghana Majhi (30), a resident of Sikuli village in the said District. As per the report, Majhi worked as a ‘militia member’ of Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) Division. According to Superintendent of Police (SP), B. Gangadhar, on receiving a tip-off, a special team of the Police conducted a search operation in the said forest and arrested Majhi while he was carrying explosive materials, which were to be supplied to the fellow Maoists. The Police also recovered Maoist leaflets and food materials from his possession.

According to the Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP), Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, following intelligence reports on the congregation of armed Maoists at the said forest near Tulsi pahad hill, personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) of Malkangiri had launched “cordon and search” operations in the area. During the operation, the SFs discovered a secret camp of the Maoists and on seeing the SFs, the Maoists opened fire at them leading to an exchange of fire. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Kishore was killed while another unidentified cadre was injured in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs)at Jantri forest in Malkangiri District of Odisha on November 26, reports The Pioneer. Receiving inputs about the presence of the Maoists, Paramilitary and Police personnel launched a combing operation in the Jantri forest of Swabhiman Anchal. As the SFs approached their hideout, the Maoists opened fire and a gun battle ensued, leading to the death of one Maoist and injuries toanother, said Director General of Police (DGP) Abhay adding that a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including AK-47 rifle and explosives, were recovered from the spot.

A woman cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed in an exchange of firewith Security Forces (SFs) at an area under Gochhapada Police Station limits in Kandhamal District of Odisha on December 11, reports Hindustan Times.Based on reliable inputs about the presence of the rebels, personnel of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) launched an operation in the said area. “While the teams were on a combing operation, a group of Maoists opened fire and our forces retaliated. The Maoists could not face the firing of our forces and withdrew from the area. A woman Maoist who had sustained bullet injuries was found dead at the encounter site,” said the Director-General of Police (DGP) Abhay adding that the identity of the slain Maoist has not been ascertained yet. SFs recovered two guns, four rounds of bullets, and some articles from the spot.

A cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was arrested following an exchange of fire with the Security Forces (SFs) near GochhapadaBireni forest at Phulbani in Kandhamal District of Odisha on December 20, reports Odisha TV. A team of the SOG (Special Operations Group) and DVF (District Voluntary Force) troopers had conducted a raid after getting information about the presence of some Maoists in a camp in the dense forest. The Maoists opened fire after spotting the SFs thereby prompting the troopers to retaliate with gunshots. While eight to 10 Maoists escaped from the spot, SFs managed to arrest one of them and recovered two country-made weapons, 1 radio, medicines and other articles from the incident spot.
