A huge cache of arms and other belongings of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were recovered by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Odisha Police personnel from a Maoist camp in a forested area near Sarkubandha in Malkangiri District of Odisha, on January 1, reports The Times of India. Commenting on the matter, District Superintendent of Police (SP), Akhileswar Singh, said "Around 10 to 12 rebels were present in the camp during our raid. However, spotting the security men, they fled and there was no exchange of fire." At least eight guns, four detonators, four metres of codex wire, a camera flash, one digital electronic multi-meter, cloth, medicines and Maoist literature were seized.

A Maoist camp was busted and a huge cache of explosives and other materials were seized by Security Forces (SFs) in a forest in Odisha's Ganjam District, reports The Business Standard on January 20. Commenting on the operation, SP, Ganjam, Ashish Singh said that the operation was carried out jointly by Special Operation Group (SOG), District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Police team in Sorada area during the last four days. The seized explosive items included two tiffin land mines bombs, three soap case bombs, nine detonators, 26 detonators with non-prime, two printer cartridge, three bundles of fuse wires, a bag containing white powder, around two Kilograms of iron plates used for preparation of clamour mines, 150 sticks of the cylindrical shape, ammunition pouch and around a dozen empty soap boxes. Several Maoist literatures, both hand written and printed, around 120 CDs, 150-watt inverter, seven bags, four pairs of uniform, red clothes were also seized.

The District Voluntary Force (DVF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) recovered a huge cache of arms and articles used by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres from a forest in Rayagada District of Odisha, on January 22, reports The Times of India. One grenade, one claymore mine weighing around 500 grams, 3 kilograms (kg) of potassium nitrate, 21 detonators, safety fuse wires, one country-made hand grenade and a landmine weighing 6 kg, Maoist uniforms and banners were recovered from the spot. Commenting on the recovery, the Superintendent of Police (SP), Rayagada, Rajesh Pandit, said "Maoists had planted a landmine few metres from the place where they had dumped the arms in Gadargudi forest. But our men detected it. There was no injury."

Security Forces (SFs) on January 28 unearthed a Communist Party of India-Maoist’s (CPI-Maoist) dump in Odisha's Rayagada District and recovered three land mines totally weighing 50 kilogram, along with several other items, reports Zee News. District Superintendent of Police (SP), Rajesh Pandit, said, based on a tip-off, a joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Voluntary Forces (DVF) raided the Kharikuti forests within the limits of Gudari Police Station of the same district, and spotted the dump. He further said, "The dump was covered with sand. With the help of a bomb disposal squad, we recovered three land mines, two weighing 20 kg each and another weighing 10 kg." He added, "Among other items recovered from the spot were 44 electronic detonators and a Maoist banner.”

Ahead of the visit of Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh to Nuapada District of Odisha on February 16, Police on February 13 unearthed four landmines at Barkot, where he is expected to interact with tribals, reports The Times of India. The landmines, found close to Sunabeda sanctuary, are suspected to have been planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres. Two hours before the landmines were discovered, several posters put up by the Nuapada division of CPI-Maoist were found in the area, warning people against allowing the minister from entering Nuapada. "We had gone to seize the posters and wanted to know what was written on them. Then some of our men saw wires, which upon scrutiny were found to be connected to landmines. We are yet to recover them as it was difficult to do so in the absence of appropriate devices," said Nuapada Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ashis Singh. Yet more landmines are suspected to have been planted by Maoists in the area, he said.

A secret dump of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was unearthed on February 15 near Godapakali under Daringbadi Police Station limits in Kandhamal District during a joint operation by personnel of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Police, reports The Hindu. Commenting on the matter, Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP), Avinash Kumar said "The explosives were dumped by Maoists in the deep forest so that those can be retrieved for future use. The security personnel safely recovered the explosives and no injury has been reported". Among the other articles recovered were 117 gelatin sticks, 30 kg of iron chips, one live landmine, 22 packets of liquid explosives and two packet of live wire. The recovery of Chinese-made explosives has taken the security men by surprise. "Never before had Chinese arms or explosives been recovered from Maoists hideouts. There is possibility that the grenades could have been smuggled from China through agents for the Maoist organization," said BSF intelligence sources. It was traced near Jakapani under the Narayanpatna Police Station limits during a joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Koraput District Police. Since past few months, SFs were searching for such units as there was much evidence that Maoists in Narayanpatna area were involved in manufacturing IEDs, including claymore mines, through use of welding and lathe machines. The items seized from the unit included gas-welding machine as well as gas cylinders used for welding. Investigation was initiated to identify the network through which the Maoists were getting their supply of gases and other goods needed for metal cutting and welding inside the dense jungle, Police source said. On March 13, equipment and goods used to manufacture claymore mines by Maoists were seized by security forces from Narikhilua jungle in Narayanpatna block.

The hideout was unearthed during a joint operation of personnel of Border Security Force (BSF) and Koraput District Police. Five Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) as well as other materials of Maoist use, including Maoist literature and uniform, were seized from the hideout. The IEDs were in the form of metal tiffin boxes, which could be easily transported and planted. Four personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) were killed on the spot and three injured in a landmine blast by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Koraput District of Odisha on August 27, reports The Hindu. According to the Police, the blast occurred on National Highway (NH) 26 at a culvert between Sakirai and Kauguntha villages near Ralegada in Sunki ghat area under Pottangi Police Station limits around 9 a.m. The BSF personnel were on leave and on their way in three vehicles to Visakhapatnam from Balimela area of Malkangiri District to board trains. Each vehicle was carrying seven BSF personnel. A man, who escaped unhurt, said their vehicles were first fired at by Maoists hiding on a nearby hill. The BSF personnel fired back. However, their third vehicle was blasted while crossing the culvert. The vehicle was thrown off the road and was destroyed. Two of the injured were in a serious condition and they were being shifted to Visakhapatnam for treatment. Koraput Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar rushed to the spot with extra force, who were also fired at by the Maoists. Kumar narrowly escaped a bullet. Security Force (SF) personnel have cordoned off the hill and rounded up some suspicious persons from the area, who are being interrogated at Pottangi Police Station. SFs seized a grenade and wire used to detonate the landmine from the hill. Some food stuff were also found at the spot, hinting that it was an ambush.

The camp was located inside the Rahaganda forest in Gajalbadi area bordering Kandhamal District. Personnel of the Sorada Police Station, District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) took part in the operation. But no Maoist could be arrested as the secret den had been deserted by them. The IEDs seized from the spot included three tiffin bombs and five soap case bombs. Apart from the IEDs, 40 Maoist propaganda booklets in Odia, one Maoist uniform, one clock meant to be used as timer of IEDs, some medicines that had crossed the expiry date were seized. The personnel of bomb disposal squad destroyed the IEDs at the spot. Investigation was on to ascertain whether the camp was of the Odisha Maoist Party (OMP) of Sabyasachi Panda or of the CPI-Maoist.

Security Forces also busted the secret Maoist camp located there. Police claimed the camp belonged to the Maoists who were involved in the August 27 ambush in the area where four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed and three others were injured. The body of the slain Maoist was recovered after the exchange of fire. Further, one INSAS rifle, two magazines of INSAS rifle, 47 live ammunition, one grenade, wireless sets, 101 detonators, camera, Improvised Explosive Device (IED), batteries, Maoist literature, materials used in the camp including ration, torches and other things of day-to-day use were also seized. The identity of the slain Maoist has not been ascertained. His body is being brought to Koraput district police headquarter.

Border Security Force (BSF) personnel of the 28 Battalion of Narayanapatna found the dump at a farm field hardly 50 metres from the village entrance while on a combing operation. The seized material was packed in 340 gunnysacks each weighing 50 kg. Truck driver Siba Swain and helper Gajani Nayak were arrested by the Police. But arms, ammunition, explosives and other material of Maoists were seized from the deserted camp. Kandhamal Superintendent of Police (SP) Kanwar Vishal Singh said a special operation was launched jointly by the personnel of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) of Kandhamal and Ganjam District on December 24 to unearth the secret camp of Maoists. Information regarding the camp came from a diary seized from a Maoist named Pratap Pradhan who was arrested during an extortion attempt two days ago.
