Taliban militants claimed to have kidnapped 28 Frontier Corps (FC) personnel. Local Taliban spokesman Ahmedullah Ahmed said, “We have kidnapped 28 Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers from different checkposts in Speenwam near Mir Ali during the last 36 hours.” He did not say whether the kidnapped soldiers had put up any resistance before being kidnapped, as earlier reports have alleged that soldiers have surrendered without resistance. Military spokesman Maj-Gen Waheed Arshad, however, termed the Taliban spokesman’s claim as wrong and said no FC personnel had been captured.

Local Taliban militants shot dead six alleged criminals to avenge the death of their four associates in the Pandialai tehsil (administrative division) of Mohmand Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on October 11, reports Dawn. They also abducted six other ‘criminals’. Locals told Dawn that the militants attacked a hideout of Yousaf Khan, an alleged anti-social element, in the Dwezai village of Pandialai during their ‘anti-vice campaign’. Four local Taliban militants were killed when the ‘criminals’ fired back. Eyewitnesses said that after the exchange of fire, hundreds of Taliban supporters surrounded the house of Yousaf Khan, who had by that time left the place along with his family, and set it ablaze. Residents said that the Taliban later traced down the fleeing ‘criminals’ in the Kasorai mountains of Tamanzo area killing six of them while abducting six others. During the past one month, militants have killed at least eight persons in their drive against ‘crimes’ in the agency. Two of them were reportedly beheaded.

Pro-Taliban militants publicly beheaded six alleged criminals in the Mohmand Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on October 12, according to Daily Times. The militants decapitated six members of a kidnap-for-ransom gang, local government official Miraj Khan said, reported AFP. Khan informed that the altercation started when militants on October 11-night raided the house of the gang’s chief in connection with the death of one of their colleagues. The gang leader opened fire, killing four of the militants. However, they later killed him and five of his family members, set ablaze his house and seized another six of his followers. "The militants on Friday publicly beheaded all six of them while holding funeral prayers for their own colleagues," Khan added.

The pro-Taliban cleric Maulana Fazlullah’s private Shariah court reportedly punished three alleged criminals by lashing them in public. "After the government’s indifference, we have set up our own private Islamic court to dispense justice to the people and today is the beginning of the struggle for a cherished goal (enforcement of Shariah)," Sirajuddin, spokesman for Maulana Fazlullah, told Daily Times after the court’s first Islamic punishment was executed in the Swat district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP). According to the spokesman, the three alleged criminals were caught "red-handed" while trying to abduct two women from the Matta sub-division in September 2007. Shamroz, Bukhtiar and Muhammad Sher were awarded 25, 20 and 15 lashes each, respectively.

At least 29 people were killed and 55 others wounded on the third consecutive day of clashes between Taliban militants and the security forces (SFs) in the Swat district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on October 28, according to The News. The dead included 15 militants, 11 SF personnel and three civilians. Unconfirmed reports, however, said that 20 SF personnel were killed in a suicide bombing in Sangota. There were conflicting claims from both the sides as the military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad put the death toll of the militants at 50-60. “The report about the casualties is based on intercepted messages of the local militants,” he claimed. However, he had no information about the fatalities suffered by the SFs. “I can’t give you an exact figure of the casualties from the security forces because the Army is not directly involved in the operation. We have provided them only gunship helicopters,” Waheed added. Sirajuddin, a purported spokesman of the local Taliban and military commander, claimed that no one was killed from their side. He added that 20 SF personnel were killed in a suicide attack in the Sangota area. Sirajuddin also claimed of having blown up a police post in Manglawar on the Malam Jabba Road.

Pro-Taliban militants and security forces agreed to a temporary cease-fire in the Swat district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on October 29 after four days of clashes in which at least 60 militants were killed. "There is a temporary (truce) arrangement," NWFP Inspector General Police Sharif Virk told Daily Times. Both sides were holding fire and no clashes were reported in the district. District Coordination Officer Arshad Majid told AFP that the cease-fire came into effect at 8:00am (PST). A deputy to cleric Maulana Fazlullah announced the truce on his unlicensed FM radio station. "The ceasefire was reached to facilitate wounded persons’ treatment," Maulana Shah Dauran said. He did not say how long the cease-fire would last. "Later on we will hold negotiations with the government on establishing Sharia" in the region, he added. Officials and sources close to militants said the truce was reached to allow both sides to gather their dead.

According to The News, fierce clashes ensued on October 31-night between the militants and the security forces (SFs) at Khwazakhela town in the Swat district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) with conflicting reports about casualties. The NWFP Home Secretary, Badshah Gul Wazir, put the number of casualties at 60-70, all militants, while the Taliban spokesman claimed that only one of their colleagues and seven civilians, including two women, were killed. There were, however, some independent reports of the killing of 56 people, including 41 militants and 11 SF personnel, and injuries to some 26 persons. According to some reports, a Frontier Corps (FC) camp also came under the Taliban siege, which the Home Secretary rejected. Sirajuddin, who is the spokesman and military commander of Maulana Fazlullah, claimed that they had taken at least 70 paramilitary soldiers and two foreigners hostage.

Police said on October 31 that Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network and the Taliban were likely linked to the October 30-suicide attack in Rawalpindi that killed seven people, according to Dawn. The blast may also be a reaction to an ongoing government crackdown on militants in northwest of the country and a raid on Lal Masjid in Islamabad in July, the Islamabad police chief said. "Taliban and Al Qaeda elements are there. Most probably they could be instrumental in this attack," police chief Saud Aziz told AFP. He disclosed that police had found the disfigured head of the bomber, who is believed to be about 23 years old and who blew himself up when police stopped him at a check-post guarding a high security area.
