A British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) report said that contrary to the perception that Osama bin Laden lived in seclusion for nearly five years in Pakistan's Abbottabad, he travelled to the restive Waziristan region to attend a dinner about a year before he was killed. The al Qaida chief was the surprise guest at a dinner hosted by two men on the fringes of the Waziristan region late one night in the summer of 2010, BBC report said.

A former Obama Administration official Michael Leiter who served as the head of the National Counterterrorism Centre (NCTC) said on May 1 that the slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden wanted to see President Barack Obama and General David Petraeus assassinated, reports The Times of India. But Michael said that he didn't think it was bin Laden's highest priority, suggesting the terrorist leader dreamed of another large-scale, 9/11-type attack on the United States.

It was reported that the residents of Bilal town in the Pakistani garrison city of Abbottabad where Osama Bin Laden was killed on May 1-2 have asked the Government to build a 'statue of peace' or a beautiful monument at the site of his compound to remind the world that there is no place for such a terrorist mastermind. "We have written to the Pakistan Government to build either a statue of peace or a beautiful monument at the site where Laden lived illegally. By doing so, we should give a message to the world that the man who was the symbol of terror is no more along with his philosophy. His elimination will bring peace to the world," Zubair Ahmed, a resident of Bilal Town said.

On May 1, four Pakistani-Britons were charged with taking inspiration from al Qaida magazine ‘Inspire’, and plotting to use a toy car to attack a base of the Territorial Army in Luton town of Britain, reports Times of India. The plot was, however, foiled. Zahid Iqbal (30) is accused of leading the terror network. He was joined by Mohammed Sarfaraz Ahmed (24), Umar Arshad (23), and Syed Farhan Hussain (21). The gang is accused of working to recruit others for jihad and raising funds. The accused were arrested at their homes in Luton on April 24. The Westminster magistrates' court heard the accused bought survival equipment, downloaded al Qaida terror manuals and discussed methods and targets. Two of the arrestees were caught discussing how to build explosive devices from instructions in Inspire magazine. It was also claimed the gang planned to attack NATO forces in Afghanistan.

In letters from his last hideout, Osama bin Laden fretted about dysfunction in his terrorist network and crumbling trust from Muslims he wished to incite against their governments and the West. “I plan to release a statement that we are starting a new phase to correct (the mistakes) we made,” bin Laden wrote in 2010. “In doing so, we shall reclaim, God willing, the trust of a large segment of those who lost their trust in the jihadis.” Until the end, bin Laden remained focused on attacking Americans and coming up with plots, however improbable, to kill US leaders. He wished especially to target airplanes carrying General David Petraeus and even President Barack Obama, reasoning that an assassination would elevate an “utterly unprepared” Vice President Joe Biden into the presidency and plunge the US into crisis.

They were, however, exonerated from charges in 2006. Doctor Arshad was killed in a United States (US) drone attack in Waziristan in March 2008.

The militants in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on May 8 distributed pamphlets pledging holy war to mark the first anniversary of the killing of slain al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, albeit a week late, reports Daily Times. Masked militants armed with assault rifles handed out copies of the pamphlet from pick-up vehicles in Miranshah, the main town of the NWA that has become known as a premier al Qaeda and Taliban hub. “Let us pledge today that we will continue our jihad and sacrifice our lives and property, like Sheikh Osama did,” it said, unsigned and dated May 2, the anniversary of the al Qaeda leader’s killing by US troops. “Today, a year since Sheikh Osama bin Laden embraced martyrdom, the enemy America is repenting. It is facing defeat and Pakistan’s future is also bleak,” it read.

The United States (US) on May 21 pressed Pakistan to act against the extremists groups, including al Qaeda and the Haqqani Network, who threaten them as well as the region and sought reopening of NATO supply routes to Afghanistan, reports Indian Express. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in Chicago on the sidelines of the crucial NATO Summit focusing Afghanistan. "They discussed the importance of reopening the NATO supply lines; of taking joint action against the extremists who threaten Pakistan, the United States, and the region, including al Qaeda and the Haqqani Network," a US State Department official said after the nearly hour-long meeting between the two leaders. They also discussed the importance of "supporting Afghanistan's security, stability, and efforts toward reconciliation; and of concluding negotiations for a US-Pakistan Bilateral Investment Treaty," the official said.

United States (US) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on May 24 denounced as “unjust and unwarranted” the treatment with the Pakistani doctor, Shakeel Afridi, who was jailed on May 23, 2012 for 33 years for helping the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the hunt for slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, reports Dawn. “We regret both the fact that he was convicted and the severity of his sentence,” Clinton told a joint press conference with New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully. The doctor’s actions “to help bring about the end of the reign of terror designed and executed by bin Laden was not in any way a betrayal of Pakistan,” Clinton said, adding, “We are raising it (his case) and we will continue to do so because we think that his treatment is unjust and unwarranted.”

A plan to shift Doctor Shakeel Afridi from Central Jail Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Punjab has been finalised on May 28 and all the Law Enforcement Agencies have been put on high alert to avert any untoward incident. Official sources told Dawn that a special meeting held in Peshawar with the concerned department and LEA’s representatives, approved the formal shifting plan of Doctor Shakil Afridi, convicted for 33 years in a treason case, which led to the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The sources said that it’s likely that Afridi might be shifted through a special helicopter provided by the Interior Ministry to a jail or fort in Punjab, which according to the sources has not been finalised.

Doctor Shakeel Afridi, who helped the United States (US) find slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, was imprisoned because of his close ties to the terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and not for his links to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), said a Pakistani officials according to a court document, reports Daily Times. The judgement document was made available to the media on May 30. It is unclear why Pakistani officials first said Afridi was jailed over his links to the CIA. The Government may have wanted to show a largely anti-American public that Pakistan will not tolerate any cooperation with the US spy agency, especially at a time of troubled relations with Washington. While the document said there was evidence that Afridi “has been shown acting with other foreign Intelligence Agencies”, it noted the court in Khyber Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) had no jurisdiction to act on that. But the court recommended that the evidence may be produced before an appropriate court for further proceedings. The Doctor’s lawyer, Samiullah Afridi, after reading the verdict said, “These charges against him are very different from the ones we were told earlier.”
