The slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s three widows and two daughters were jailed on April 2 for 45 days and fined PKR 10,000 each after finding them guilty of illegally staying in the country, reports Daily Times. A Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) official said that the family, including three widows, two daughters and nine children had already served a month sentence in a sub-jail in Sector G-6 of Islamabad. He said the family would serve only 14 days in prison because they have been in detention since March 3. After which they would be deported to their hometown, he added. The official said the widows, Khaira Hussain alias Umme Hamza, Slham Sharif alias Ume Khalid, Amal Ahmed and two daughters Mariam and Summaya confessed to illegally staying in Pakistan. Amal belongs to Yemen, while Khaira and Slham are from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Hindustan Times on April 4 reports that United States (US) has hard evidence that Pakistan-based Jama’at ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed was communicating with slain al Qaeda Osama bin Laden through a courier which subsequently led USA to put a USD 10-million bounty on Saeed’s head. The evidence also points to Laden; of having played a key role in the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai in 2008 that killed 166 people and injured more than 300. All this was unearthed by US Special Forces in May 2011 when they killed Osama Bin Laden in his hideout in Abbottabad, and took back bagfuls of his documents and computer equipment

Times of India on April 5 reported that the Abdul Rehman Makki, the brother-in-law of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed is a conduit between LeT and Taliban. Government sources say that one of the main reasons for the US announcing a reward of USD two million for Makki is said to be his proximity to Taliban supreme commander Mullah Omar and al Qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahiri. According to Indian authorities, Makki had regularly participated in meetings along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border that also featured Omar and al-Zawahiri and in which it was decided to attack Indian interests in Kabul, including its embassy

More than 181,000 people have fled fighting between Government troops and Taliban or al Qaeda-linked militants in the Khyber Agency Areas of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on April 13, reports Daily Times. “The number of people displaced by an ongoing government security operation in northwest Pakistan has now surpassed 181,000,” said a statement from the office of the UNHCR. The agency said that about 10,000 new arrivals were being registered daily at the Jalozai camp near Peshawar. “The vast majority of those registered - 85 percent - choose not to live in the Jalozai camp, opting instead to stay with friends, relatives or in rented accommodation,” said the UNHCR adding that it had distributed more than 37,000 humanitarian kits. Other UN agencies, including UNICEF and the World Health Organisation, were also providing aid. The fighting started on January 20 when the Government troops attacked terrorist groups in the Khyber Agency.

the US is drastically reducing the number of aid projects in Pakistan as part of reforms aimed at improving the distribution of billions of dollars in funding, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) head Rajiv Shah said. The total amount of civilian aid will remain the same, but the US hopes the reorganisation will produce better, higher profile outcomes that can win hearts and minds in a country where anti-American sentiment is rampant, said Rajiv Shah. The move comes over two years after the US launched a five-year USD 7.5 billion civilian aid programme in Pakistan that supporters hoped would improve the perception of America, elicit greater support from the government in the fight against the Taliban and al Qaeda and reduce the allure of those groups to average Pakistanis. The vast majority of aid before that went to the military

According to an April 18 intelligence agency’s report, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Hakeemullah Mehsud convened a meeting in North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to plan targeted attacks in case of the expected resumption of NATO supplies, reports Express Tribune. An extract of the intelligence report states that Mehsud convened a meeting with several senior ‘commanders’ of TTP, Afghan Taliban and al Qaeda on an unspecified date of February 2012. The report adds that in case of the resumption of NATO supplies, the militants will show their anger through terrorist activities across the country, including targeting high-profile personalities. The report says possible targets not only include United States (US) diplomats and their bases in Pakistan, but also Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan and Maulana Fazlur Rehman of Jama’at Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

The mastermind of one of the most serious terror threats since the September 11, 2001 attacks (also known as 9/11), Najibullah Zazi (26), testified on April 18 that al Qaeda trainers taught him a “very simple” formula for making suicide bombs in South Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reported Dawn. Zazi said he learned how to mix chemicals found in nail polish remover and other products sold at beauty supply stores. “It was very simple and they’re everywhere,” he said of the chemicals. Zazi, 26, was testifying for a second day at the trial of Adis Medunjanin in Federal Court in Brooklyn in US. Prosecutors allege that Medunjanin, Zazi and another former high school classmate from Queens, Zarein Ahmedzay, formed a terror cell that posed one of the most ominous terror threats since 9/11. Zazi testified that during their 2008 trip to Pakistan, the three Americans met a top al Qaeda operative they knew only as Hamad. Authorities say Hamad was Adnan Shukrijumah, a Saudi still listed on Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) website as a fugitive who plotted attacks for al Qaeda worldwide.

Al Qaeda's slain leader Osama Bin Laden had planned to follow up the September 11 (also known as 9/11) attacks with shoe bombers to blow up American passenger planes, which would have brought the American economy to its knees, a British man, Saajid Badat (33), convicted on terrorism charges testified in a trial Federal District Court in Brooklyn (New York) on April 23, reported The Times of India. "He (bin Laden) said that the American economy is like a chain. If you break one link of the chain, the whole economy will be brought down," Badat testified. Badat was convicted in London for his role in a 2001 plot to bring down an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami with explosives hidden in his shoes. While Badat's testimony was not directly related to New York subway terror plot, it was used to corroborate facts about the training in Qaeda run camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a report in The New York Times said.

A special US envoy met Pakistani Government and Army officers on April 26 in Islamabad in an effort to get the country to reopen American and NATO supply routes to Afghanistan, reports Daily Times. Washington’s envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman said during a joint conference with Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani that the US was ready for talks on re-opening the supply lines and clearing outstanding payments to Pakistan to meet the expenses of military operations in its tribal areas to fight Taliban and al Qaeda. “We are ready to get to the work. We want to work to reopen the ground lines of communication. We want to discuss several outstanding claims for the Coalition Support Fund,” Grossman said. He also said he did not expect to get an immediate commitment that the routes would reopen but that “the task now is to begin a conversation about how to move forward”. Grossman met Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Foreign Affairs Ministry officials to discuss the supply routes.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) shared intelligence with Pakistan suggesting al Qaeda planned to carry out major attacks inside Pakistan, reports Dawn. The information was based on documents seized by US Navy SEALs during the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad. Some of the details of the intelligence shared with Dawn revealed that before being killed in the May 2 raid, Osama bin Laden, along with Ayman Al-Zawahiri, who took over as al Qaeda chief in June 2011, and other senior leaders of the terror outfit had planned to mount indiscriminate attacks on Pakistani soil. There were conflicting reports about the shared intelligence. One participant of the meeting said CIA Deputy Director Michael Morrell had presented a dossier to Pakistani officials while another claimed that it was just a tip about what al Qaeda had been planning to do in Pakistan and lacked related details — the bits that could help put the jigsaw together.

Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden had planned to mount indiscriminate attacks on Pakistani soil before his killing in a covert United States (US) raid in Abbottabad, the documents seized by the Americans from the slain terrorist's compound in the Pakistani garrison city of Abbottabad in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have suggested, reports The Times of India on April 28 (today). The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) shared intelligence about possible al Qaeda attacks inside Pakistan when officials of the two countries met to explore the way forward in resetting bilateral ties. The information was "based on documents seized by US Navy SEALs during the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound" in Abbottabad in May 2011. Some details of the intelligence "revealed that before being killed in the May 1-2 raid, bin Laden, along with Ayman al Zawahiri and other senior leaders of the terror outfit had planned to mount indiscriminate attacks on Pakistani soil."

United States (US) Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on April 27 that there is “no silver bullet” to completely destroy al Qaeda but argued that killing Osama bin Laden helped set the network back, reports Dawn. “Having been involved in the operations, even before we did bin Laden, it’s clear that there is no kind of silver bullet here to suddenly being able to destroy al Qaeda, and that includes even going after bin Laden,” he said. “But the way this works is that the more successful we are at taking down those who represent their spiritual and ideological leadership, the greater our ability to weaken their threat to this country and to other countries,” he added further. Panetta said he was certain that America was safer as a result of the bin Laden operation. “When you combine that with the other operations that have taken place, that have gone after al Qaeda leadership, I think it really has weakened al Qaeda as an organization and certainly it has prevented them from having the command-and-control capability to be able to put together an attack similar to 9/11,” the Defense Secretary pointed out. However, he cautioned, that this did not mean that there was no longer a terrorism threat. “It doesn’t mean that we somehow don’t have the responsibility to keep going after them wherever they are,” Panetta said.

Al Qaeda named Farman Ali Shinwari (30) who belongs to Khugakhel sub-tribe of Shinwaris, and hails from Landikotal subdivision of Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), as its head in Pakistan, reported The News on April 29. A statement had been issued by the al Qaeda leadership saying that Farman Ali Shinwari has been chosen as the head in Pakistan. Local officials also confirmed the development. The statement issued by al Qaeda’s Dawa Wing said that after consultations and approval of top al Qaeda leadership, Farman Shinwari was selected as head of the network in Pakistan. The statement said that reason of his selection was his close affiliation with slain al Qaeda leader Badar Mansoor and his knowledge about FATA.

Labelling Zawahiri as now the number one target of the US, John Brennan, the US Deputy National Security Advisor told the media, "We believe he (Zawahiri) is in that region of the world, as well as other al Qaeda leaders that continue to borough into areas of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan,” adding, "We're not going to relent until they're brought to justice one way or the other." "We demonstrated the ability to do that with Osama bin Laden. We are in constant consultation with our Pakistani counter-terrorism partners on a regular basis about how we can do this as soon as possible," he further added.
