Asserting that the United States (US) faced tough threats from the American recruits of al Qaeda, Attorney General Eric Holder on March 6 said that the Government has "clear authority" to kill its citizens abroad who present an imminent threat of violent attack, reports Times of India. "Given the nature of how terrorists act and where they tend to hide, it may not always be feasible to capture a US citizen terrorist who presents an imminent threat of violent attack," Holder said, adding, "In that case, our Government has the clear authority to defend the US with lethal force." Holder said the argument by some that the US President is required to get permission from a federal court before taking action against a US citizen who is a senior operative of the al Qaeda or associated forces is not accurate.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik on March 7 revealed that Pakistan’s Security Agencies were a few days too late – saying they were ‘very close’ to capturing the slain al Qaeda chief, Osama bin Laden, reports Express Tribune. He told a judicial commission that security agencies were about to find Bin Laden’s compound when United States (US) Special Forces captured and killed the al Qaeda chief on May 1, 2011 in Abbottabad District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “We were about to catch Osama when US Navy SEALs raided his compound (in Abbottabad),” insiders told The Express Tribune while quoting Malik.

In a new twist to the Osama bin Laden saga, emails leaked from an intelligence analysis firm Stratfor suggest that the body of the al Qaeda leader was actually sent to the US for cremation and not buried at sea, reports Indian Express. According to the emails, Osama was killed in a US raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and was transported to the US and cremated. The emails were allegedly obtained by the hacker group Anonymous from Stratfor, a private organisation dealing with analysis of intelligence and geopolitical situations. WikiLeaks has released the emails exchanged within Stratfor on May 2, the day Osama was killed. Following his death, the US said he was buried at sea in accordance with Islamic tradition. However, Stratfor’s vice-president for intelligence, Fred Burton reportedly said he doubts the White House version of what happened. Burton, says the body was “bound for Dover, [Delaware] on (a) CIA plane” and “onward to Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Bethesda (Maryland)”.

A new twist to the mystery of how Osama got a shelter in a Pakistani cantonment town for over six years, before he was killed by US SEALs came from a retired Pakistani brigadier Shaukat Qadir, who carried out his own investigations, the Times said. Besides the intense jealousy among his wives, Qadir claims that Osama had been sidelined by his outfit. “al Qaeda decided to retire him in 2003 as he was mentally senile having picked up some degenerative disease from 2001.”

Urging the Pakistanis to revolt against the Government and the military, the al Qaeda Chief Ayman al Zawahiri said on March 16 that unless its demands were met, al Qaeda would not release an elderly American development expert who was abducted from Lahore District of Punjab province on August 13, 2011, reports Dawn. In a video uploaded on the Internet, the al Qaeda leader said, “By the grace of Allah, we, on our part, have captured the American Jew Warren Weinstein,” adding, “He (Weinstein) will not return to his family, by the will of Allah, until our demands are met, which include the release of Aafia Siddiqui, Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman, the family of Shaikh Osama bin Laden, and every single person arrested on allegations of links with al Qaeda and Taliban.”

Slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had ordered his followers in Afghanistan and Pakistan to attack the aircraft of United States (US) President Barack Obama, reported Dawn on March 17 (today). The report, which cited documents seized at the Abbottabad compound where Bin Laden was killed by US forces, said the al Qaeda leader also sought to kill General David Petraeus, who then headed international forces in Afghanistan. Bin Laden wanted to kill the US President because “Obama is the head of infidelity and killing him automatically will make (Vice President Joe) Biden take over the presidency,” according to the documents.

The report said that Bin Laden entered Pakistan along with his family through Afghanistan and resided in various areas of the country. However, no records could be found at any airport regarding his travels. “Mohamed Merah explained that he belonged to al Qaeda. He explained he had been trained by al Qaeda in the Pakistani-Afghanistan region in Waziristan,” Molins told reporters in Toulouse, scene of two of the shootings. Waziristan is a tribal area straddling the Afghan-Pakistani border which is known as a haven for militants — including al Qaeda militants — connected to Taliban guerrillas fighting in both countries. Molins said the suspect had gone to the region twice and on one occasion had been arrested by Afghan police and handed over to US army troops, who put him on a flight back to France.

French Police laid siege on March 21 to an apartment block where a self-declared al Qaeda militant who boasted of having “brought France to its knees” with a wave of deadly attacks was holed up. Prosecutors said suspect Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent, had fought off several Police assaults on his flat and bragged to negotiators of having been trained by al Qaeda on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. “He expressed no regret apart from not having had enough time to kill more victims and even boasted of having brought France to its knees,” France’s top anti-terror prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters.

Major Haroon Ashiq, a former Pakistan Army commando who became a key al Qaeda operative and an accused in several murder cases and abductions is all set to walk free from his Rawalpindi prison cell after being acquitted by Anti-Terrorism Court in a murder case, with witnesses withdrawing their testimony in fear of reprisals, reports The News. Major Haroon is accused of murdering Special Service Group (SSG) Major General Faisal Alvi on November 19, 2008 in Islamabad for opposing Taliban’s peace agreement with the Pakistani Government. According to media reports Haroon is a close associate of Illyas Kashmiri, the founder of Brigade 313, later an operational arm of al Qaeda, within his jihadist outfit Harkat ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI), and is involved in several abductions for ransom.

The bid to release a Swiss woman abdcuted in Yemen has suffered a blow after her abductors made excessive demands, including for Osama bin Laden’s widows to be freed, tribal chief Ali Abdullah Zibari said. Al Qaeda fighters abducted the woman on March 14 from her home in the Red Sea port city of Hodeida, where she had been teaching at a foreign language institute. Tribal chief Ali Abdullah Zibari said, however, that mediation efforts had so far failed because of excessive demands placed by her captors, including the release of Osama bin Laden’s widows held in Pakistan.

A new book, tilted, The Hunt for KSM: Inside the Pursuit and Takedown of the Real 9/11 Mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, has claimed that it was not Osama bin Laden who had come up with the 9/11 plot, reports The Times of India on March 31 (today). When the strike was first proposed to him in 1996 the al Qaeda leader refused to give his backing. It was not until three years later before he could be brought around and another five years before the attack eventually took place. The book also gives the first in depth account of the problems the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Central Investigative Agency (CIA) had hunting down al Qaeda after 9/11.

Slain al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden spent nine years on the run in Pakistan after the September 11, 2001 (also known as 9/11) attacks, and during that time he moved between five safe houses and fathered four children, at least two of whom were born in a Government hospital, his youngest wife, Amal Ahmad Abdul Fateh (30), told Pakistani investigators, reports The Hindu on March 31 (today). The 9/ 11 attacks caused the bin Laden family to “scatter”, claimed the report. Fateh returned to Karachi with her newborn daughter, Safia, where they stayed for about nine months. They changed houses up to seven times under arrangements brokered by “some Pakistani family” and bin Laden's elder son, Saad.
