A former commander of the insurgents was killed in Dera Bugti on December 19 in a landmine blast, according to Daily Times. Former commander Bangan Khan, who was a close associate of slain tribal chief Nawab Akbar Bugti before surrendering to the government in July 2006, died during a landmine blast in the Ghot Habib Rai area of Dera Bugti district, while his four associates were injured. Azad Baloch, a spokesperson for the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), claimed responsibility for the attack. He said Khan had been killed using a remote-controlled bomb, not a landmine, to punish him for siding with the government.

The Government, on December 21, reportedly sought intervention of the United Nations (UN) to help avert nutrition crisis among 84,000 displaced persons in Balochistan. They were displaced due to instability in the province. A senior UN official, speaking to Dawn, said that this is the first official acknowledgement of the deteriorating nutritional situation among internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Balochistan. Earlier, the Government had rejected the presence of IDPs in the province, and had prevented aid groups from helping them. Among the 84,000 IDPs, 26,000 were women and 33,000 were children, according to UN estimates.

President Pervez Musharraf ordered a marked improvement in the law and order situation in the country, particularly in Balochistan, well before the 2007 general elections, official sources told Daily Times on December 22. The sources said that at a meeting held last week, senior security officials reviewed the law and order situation in Balochistan, particularly after the killing of the late Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti. They added that Musharraf had directed the Interior Ministry to keep a close watch over Baloch tribal and political leaders who had frequently visited Afghanistan and met with Indian agents based there. The sources said that the meeting was informed that some Baloch politicians were suspected of having links with anti-state individuals across the border and were creating unrest in Balochistan. They added that the ministry ordered the law enforcement agencies to monitor the activities of members of the Bugti family and the supporters of Mir Hamdan Bugti. The sources said that according to intelligence reports, heavy monetary transactions had been tracked in the bank accounts of Mir Hamadan Bugti and his close aide Ali Nawaz. The intelligence agencies are investigating the matter, they added.

At least eight helicopters reportedly took part in an operation against the tribesmen at Zain Koh near Dera Bugti, said a security official. He said that it was an early morning operation and "we have no information about any casualties". However, an unnamed spokesperson for the insurgents said they suffered no casualties.
