According to The News, the first-ever tribal Jirga (council) of its kind in the history of Dera Bugti in the Balochistan province held at the Jinnah Stadium on August 24 unanimously announced to abandon the “Sardari system” (a feudal system) in the Bugti tribe. The Jirga paid tributes to the Government for its development activities in Balochistan, including Dera Bugti and thanked President Pervez Musharraf “for emancipating the people of the area from the atrocities and excesses of the former tribal chief.” The Jirga, attended by thousands of tribesmen of Kalpar, Masoori, Firozani, Shambhani, Mandrani, Raheja and Marhata sub-tribes, assured complete support to the Government. Through a resolution, the Jirga reportedly reiterated its loyalty with Pakistan and “made it clear that any conspiracy against the country would be foiled with an iron hand.” “Today, we from the Bugti tribe, announce bringing an end to the Nawabi system and from now on the laws of Pakistan would be respected and adhered to,” declared another resolution. Yet another resolution called upon the Marri and other tribes to hand over accused Akbar Bugti and others to the Bugtis so that justice is done with them in accordance with the tribal traditions.

Tribal elders and political leaders have rejected the Dera Bugti gathering and described it as a Government-sponsored drama, according to Dawn. The Khan of Kalat, Mir Suleman Daud, said that the Dera Bugti gathering had no importance as far as tribal traditions were concerned. “It could be considered a jirga of a class of Bugti tribesmen,” he said, adding that different quarters were talking about the abolition of a tribal system but with the passage of time it was becoming stronger, instead of becoming weak. “A tribal system also exists among Sindhis, Pushtoons and even among Punjabis,” the Khan of Kalat said, adding that a tribal system could not be abolished through such jirgas. He said the Government was involved in all the wrong things happening in Balochistan.

Four insurgents and two security force (SF) personnel are reported to have died and an officer wounded on August 25 as the SFs used helicopter gun-ships to launch another operation in parts of the Kohlu district in Balochistan province. Dawn has reported that the SFs moved in to Karmo Wadh and Tartani areas near Kahan and used helicopter gun-ships to attack insurgents’ hideouts. The operation was launched two days ago, said sources. Azad Baloch, a spokesperson for the proscribed Balochistan Liberation Army, informed the media at the Quetta Press Club on telephone from an unknown place that armed insurgents were resisting the attacks. He claimed that over a dozen SF personnel had been killed and many others injured in the area. He also claimed killing Frontier Corps personnel in a landmine explosion in the Kamo Wadh area. However, official sources did not confirm any casualties to the SFs.

Nawab Akbar Bugti, the leader of the Bugti tribe and President of the Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) and also the driving force behind the anti-Government rebellion in Balochistan, was killed in a massive military operation in the Bhambore Hills, an area between the cities of Kohlu and Dera Bugti in the Balochistan Province on August 26, according to Daily Times. “Yes, Nawab Bugti has been killed in the operation,” said Federal Information Minister Mohammad Ali Durrani. As many as 21 army commandos and 37 rebels had also been killed in the same operation, which targeted 50 to 80 of Nawab Bugti’s closest family members and top commanders. Reports also indicated that Balochistan Liberation Army Chief Balach Marri and Nawab Bugti’s grandsons Brahamdagh and Mir Ali Bugti were also killed in the fighting. Nawab Bugti’s location was discovered three days ago and security forces had besieged the hills where he was hiding, the report added. Sources said that Nawab Bugti’s whereabouts were established by monitoring satellite phone intercepts. “It is presumed that Akbar Bugti and a number of other terrorists have been killed,” an official statement said. It said that heavy fire was exchanged, which resulted in a cave-in, which buried all those inside, including Nawab Bugti and a large number of his top aides.

According to Daily Times, mobs protesting the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti cut off the main highway connecting Quetta, capital of Balochistan province, to Karachi at four points and another heading west to Iran on August 30 as the number of arrests in four days rose to nearly 700. About 200 people blocking a bridge with trucks on the highway to Karachi lifted their siege after eight hours following talks between protest leaders and Government officials. Boulders and crudely erected barricades reportedly blocked another road linking Karachi with Gwadar. The blockades prevented many workers from entering Quetta, forcing markets, banks and shops to close. Dozens of buses were parked at a terminal in Quetta unable to leave for Karachi and Lahore.
