Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel arrested a Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militant, identified as Saydul, and recovered bomb-making materials from Joynagar village in the Sherpur sub-district on May 1, according to Daily Star. The seizure, made from a maize field, included explosives, detonators, some transistors, indicator light, 2.5 kilograms of gunpowder, seven rounds of bullies, bomb making circuits and electric ware.

Independent reports that on May 2, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel arrested ‘Bogra zone commander’ of the Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), identified as Jahangir Alam alias Mokhlesur Rahman alias Adnan Sami alias Ammar, from the Charmatha area of Bogra district. During interrogation, Jahangir confessed that he joined JMB in early 2001 and was promoted as an Ehsar (full-time activist) before being given the responsibility of Rangpur district in late 2001. Subsequently he was given the charge of Nilphamari district. In 2005, he was given the charge of Bogra district and was looking after the outfit’s activities in the Pabna, Sirajganj, Bogra, Jaipurhat and Gaibandha districts.

The recovery included one bomb making dice, 605 detonators (locally made), two 3.3 balls, 7.62 and 51 mm blanks, 188 caps of grenades, 250 gram glass wool, 10 kg lead acetate, 300 gram Lead Nitrate, 200 gram lead sulphate, 700 gram aluminium powder, 500 gram Picric acid, 200 gram gun powder, 1,000 resistors, a huge number of training manuals of JMB and other equipment.

Speaking in the Jatiyo Sangsad (National Assembly), she said that her Government had sent a list of the terrorists to Indian authorities. The Indian Government had, she claimed, assured her that it would take action against them. But the issue of bringing back the terrorists remained undecided, as no extradition treaty exists between the two countries, she told the Parliament.

According to Daily Star, a regional leader of the Janajuddha faction of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP), Rafiqul Islam Baby, was killed in an encounter between members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and his accomplices on May 9 at Madhya-danga in Daulatpur of Khulna city. The extremist was the prime accused in journalist Harun-or-Rashid murder case. According to the report, he was arrested on May 8 evening at Jugnipasha village under Phultala sub-district of Khulna district. Two RAB personnel sustained bullet injury during the encounter. A pipe gun, a six-shooter gun, five bullets and two shells of used bullets were recovered from the spot.

According to the report, tipped off, police of Sonadanga police station conducted a search of the abandoned building belonging to a civilian Mosharraf Hossain and recovered the bombs. No one has been arrested in connection with the recovery.

The recovered firearms include one Light Gun and two other guns. The army also recovered VCD sets, cassettes, four cell phones, a tape recorder and receipt books used for collecting toll, the army sources said. The arrested persons, reported to be involved in extortion in the area, have been identified as Novel Chakma, Sumonta Chakma, Barun Chakma, Nirmol Chakma and Sushil Chakma.

The Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court in Patuakhali on May 30 sentenced five militants of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to rigorous imprisonment for life and fined Taka 5,000 each in connection with the August 17, 2005-serial bomb blasts in Patuakhali, according to Daily Star. They were identified as the outfit’s regional chief in Patuakhali-Barguna region Masum Billah, Hafez Al-Amin alias Abdullah alias Sentu, Mostafa Hasan Abu Zafor and Asadul alias Arif. The last person is yet to be arrested. According to the report, Masum Billah was also an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, before he joined the outfit in 2001. He had surrendered to the Rapid Action Battalion authorities in Patuakhali on February 12 following detention of his parents. The other three militants too were ICS activists.
