According to Daily Star, two cadres of the Janajuddha faction of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP), Mohammad Abul Hossain and Mohammad Shamim, were killed in crossfire between PBCP cadres and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel at Tootpara Barhokhalparh area under Khulna Sadar Police Station in the Khulna district. They were arrested on September 1 at Jorhakhal Bazaar, according to a RAB press release. Three cartridges and a few splinters of bombs were recovered from the encounter site. The extremists reportedly were involved in extortion activities targeting Government and non-government officials, doctors, engineers and businessmen.

Hafez Syed Nayeem Ahmed of village Shaharpara under Jagannathpur sub-district in Sunamganj and Sharif Shahedul Islam of village Maishdi in Chandpur were arrested from the Sylhet railway station, following information provided by two persons arrested earlier. Meanwhile, according to Daily Star, investigators suspect that the four persons have links with the banned Harkat-ul Jihad al Islami (HuJI) and other Islamist groups.

Mufti Abdul Hannan, ‘operations commander’ of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B), has been charged with involvement in the Ramna Batamul explosions and was placed on an eight-day remand by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court Dhaka on September 10. According to Daily Star, the Criminal Investigation Department produced Hannan before the CMM Court and submitted a petition for placing him on a 10-day remand for interrogation in connection with the blasts that left 10 people dead and several others injured on April 14, 2001. The court granted an 8-day remand.

According to Daily Star, suspected extremists belonging to the Janajuddha faction of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) killed a local leader of the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jubo Dal, in the Santhia sub-district of Pabna on September 15. Police sources said that Badsha Mia was attacked at Chandpur crossing at about 2:30pm while returning home after attending a programme of Industries Minister Matiur Rahman Nizami in the sub-district headquarters. The four other accused are Rezaul Haq Reza of Jamalpur, Habibur Rahman Habib and Abdullah Al Shohail of Gazipur and Mohammad Sagir Hossain of Dhaka. The court acquitted Mustafizur Rahman Musa of Naogaon as the charge brought against him could not be proved. The punishment of the militants will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, the judgement said.

Registrar of the Supreme Court, Fazlul Karim, informed the jail authorities that one of the seven convicts, Iftekhar Hasan Al Mamun, has filed a petition before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on September 25 seeking permission to appeal against the High Court verdict that approved the death sentences. Execution of the death sentences for other convicts has also been stayed till disposal of the petition. No date has, however, been fixed for the hearing on the petition.
