Ten persons were killed and eight others received bullet injuries when encroachers from Arunachal Pradesh opened fire with hand-made weapons in the Behali Reserve Forest area of Sonitpur District on January 29, reports The Assam Tribune. Around 100 assailants, armed with guns and other lethal weapons, attacked the villagers, who have been camping there to protect those areas from further encroachment, and started indiscriminate firing at them killing those villagers on the spot. The Behali Reserve Forest was witnessing trouble for some time as frequent clashes took place in the area between encroachers from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and though major eviction drives were launched by the administration in November and December 2013, the encroachers managed to settle there again. The report further said that encroachment of the reserved forests in different parts of Assam is giving an added advantage to the militant groups as there is very little presence of any Government machinery in such areas. The militants belonging to the IK Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB-IKS) have taken advantage of it particularly in Sonitpur and Chirang Districts.

At least 40 militants were killed on February 20 as fighter jets targeted suspected insurgent hideouts in Dattakhel, Shawal and Mir Ali tehsils (revenue unit) of the North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Dawn. The bombardment comes a day after Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said a ceasefire can be negotiated upon if the Army stopped targeting its members. Other military sources said that the militants involved in the Peshawar cinema blast (February 10) and killing of an Army officer (February 18) in frontier region Peshawar two days ago were targeted in their hideouts situated in Khyber Agency. Improvised explosive device (IED) making factories and prepared explosives were also destroyed in the strikes. After being convinced by the top Army leadership, Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif gave a go ahead for the airstrikes, reports Dawn. High level civil military consultations continued for three days which culminated on these strikes. Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif and intelligence heads briefed the PM over rapid developments in the tribal areas and also shared images of militant hideouts procured through their own spy drones. Authorisation of the PM was sought for more strikes at other locations, which according to the sources has been granted. The News adds that Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Pervaiz Rasheed, on February 20 said the TTP in unequivocal terms commented “If you talk with us, we will respond with greater enthusiasm. But, if you would strike once, we would strike twice”. Pervaiz Rasheed said in a statement, soon after the Federal Minister of Interior Chaudhary Nisar announced that PM Nawaz Sharif in consultation with the military leadership has linked the peace talks to a halt to the bloodshed. Further, referring to the talks with the TTP, Federal Minister of Interior Chaudhary Nisar said, “Dialogue and violence cannot take place side by side. The military has been asked to retaliate in self-defence, which is their right. This [self-defence] is the right of the armed forces, which cannot be taken away from them,” he said. Members of the government’s peace committee were also consulted in this regard, the interior minister added. “We have burnt the midnight oil,” he said, explaining how the Government had worked overtime on how to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief and member of the TTP talks committee Mohammad Ibrahim on February 20 condemned the shelling in North Waziristan Agency and Khyber Agency and described it as an action against innocent citizens, reports Dawn. In a statement issued by the JeI, he said that the air strikes would further complicate the situation, adding that the ultimate sufferers would be the innocent people because random firing and shelling could never prove useful for restoration of peace.

At least 19 civilians, including 10 women and four children, were killed and more than 50 others were injured in gang war clashes among rival gangsters, Uzair Baloch, Ghaffar Zikri and Baba Ladla on March 12 in Gahribshah locality of Lyari Town in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports The Express Tribune. Violence triggered after the March 10, 2014, killing of five relatives of Baba Ladla. However, violence continued on March 12 after the killing of a brother of Ghaffar Zikri, the head honcho of another powerful gang allied with the Baba Ladla group, in an alleged encounter with the law enforcers. According to details, the two gangs suspected that their rival, Uzair Baloch, the head of the People’s Amn Committee (PAC), was behind these killings. Gangsters from Baba Ladla and Ghaffar Zikri groups, armed with Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and automatic weapons, decided to avenge the deaths of their cadres, said the insiders. “They mounted the attack after reaching the Rangiwara locality, the stronghold of Baba Ladla group, on Gharibshah, the bastion of the Uzair Baloch group,” said one of the insiders. “However, stiff resistance checked their march and the two sides rained bullets and rockets on each other from a distance.” Most of the casualties were caused when shoppers in the busy Jhatpat Market, which serves as a buffer between Rangiwara and Gharibshah, were caught up in the cross-fire. “Jhatpat Market is a Line of Control between the two gangs,” said another insider. “Innocent shoppers and traders in Jhatpat Market had fell victim to the gang war,” he added. Separately, the Rangers claimed to have killed at least nine suspects and arrested 56 others in Lyari after the clash, reported The News. According to sources the suspects killed by Rangers were affiliated with Baba Ladla group.

At least six persons, including three militants, two civilians and one soldier were killed in Kathua District on March 28, reports Daily Excelsior. Three Pakistani militants struck at Tarnah bridge at Dayala Chak near Hiranagar around 5 am, hijacked a Bolero along with driver after killing a passenger and injuring three others, travelled about 19 kilometers on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway and killed the Bolero driver before striking at an Army camp at Janglot in which an Army soldier and all three militants, believed to be Pakistanis, were killed while another soldier was injured. Entire operation lasted about 12 hours. The militants killed the Bolero driver by putting a cloth in his mouth and abandoned the vehicle at Sahar Khud before opening fire at the Army camp at Janglot. However, alert troops didn’t allow the militants to enter inside the camp and engaged them in firing outside killing all of them during nearly 12 hours long operation, which was declared close at 6.30 pm. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Rajesh Kumar said the militants were heavily equipped with modern weaponry and eatable. Recoveries made from three slain militants included three AK rifles, three pistols, 18 magazines, a large quantity of hand grenades, four pre-prepared Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and eatables. Sources admitted that the militants were Pakistanis and cadre of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit though they didn’t carry anything, which could establish their identity or outfit. The photographs, tactics of fighting and heavy weaponry and other techniques adopted by the militants indicated that they were Pakistan cadre of the LeT outfit. Meanwhile, a militant outfit ‘Al Shohada Brigade’, believed to be a shadow outfit of LeT terror outfit, today claimed responsibility for the terror attack. A ‘spokesperson’ of the outfit called some news organisations in Srinagar and claimed the responsibility for the attack. The outfit’s name was first circulated on September 26, 2013 when it claimed the responsibility for twin attacks on Police Station in Hiranagar and an Army camp in Samba District.

Police sources said four to five armed militants in army fatigues came to an RCC bridge construction site and fired indiscriminately, killing two labourers and a truck driver. The labourers have been identified as Ashatan Bibi and Saiful Sheikh and the truck driver as Rajib Muchahary. The injured labourer is identified as Aiyuf Rehman. Sources said there were about 10-12 labourers working at the site when the incident occurred. Sources said the militants had earlier demanded a ransom of INR 100000 after abducting the contractor involved in the construction of the bridge.“They had also come earlier and asked us to stop the construction. We had informed the main contractor about it but he had asked us to continue with our work. He had said he would look into it but then this incident happened today,” a labourer said. At least 24 persons including 10 militants, seven Security personnel and civilian each were killed during a clash when Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants attacked the old terminal of Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh on June 8, reports The News. Authorities said all 10 militants had been killed and that the bodies of 14 victims, including security personnel and four airport workers, had been identified at the city´s main hospital. TTP accepted the responsibility of the attack. Officials said the gunmen entered from two sides of the airport -- the terminal used for the hajj pilgrimage, and an engineering section close to an old terminal that is no longer in use - at around 11:00 pm on June 8. After the attack was quelled, a bomb disposal expert was seen walking from the site carrying a suicide vest and a bag full of hand grenades."Seven terrorists were killed by the security forces while three blew themselves up," Rizwan Akhter, Director General of Sindh Rangers said. Militants, some dressed in Army uniform, clashed with the airport´s security force who were backed by Police, paramilitary squads and elite commandos. Smoke was seen billowing from the airport as fires raged close to planes parked on the runway. A senior intelligence official said it appeared the militants had aimed to hijack a plane that passengers were boarding at the main terminal, but that when they were repelled they went on the rampage. "The passenger plane at Jinnah terminal was their target and when they failed to reach there they destroyed two private terminals in frustration," he commented.
