State-owned Radio Nepal quoting the Dhankuta-based No.2 Brigade of the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) said that eight army personnel and four policemen were killed in the five-hour battle while 10 security men were injured. The insurgents had reportedly exploded landmines targeting a security team that had gone to the area from Bhedetar to clear the obstructions on the highway.

The Himalayan Times, quoting Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) sources, has reported that security forces’ killed at least 140 Maoist insurgents during an encounter at Bankhet in the far-western district of Kailali on January 5. A statement issued from the RNA Pristana headquarters said the troops attacked a Maoist base at Bankhet and engaged in a three-hour long battle with the insurgents. Further, it said that around 41 dead bodies of the Maoists have been recovered including that of ‘Bheri-Karnali Brigade commander’, Jit, from the incident site. Over 700 Maoists were reportedly involved in the attack and they have reportedly shot at the RNA helicopter used for the raid, without causing much damage. However, there are conflicting reports on the fatalities as some media reports indicated that between 40-50 insurgents have died. Fatalities, if any, on the RNA’s side have not been reported thus far.

A Deputy Commandant of the Border Security Force (BSF), a soldier and one police personnel were killed and four persons, including a security officer, sustained injuries when a two-member Fidayeen (suicide squad) attacked the Income Tax (IT) office in the capital Srinagar on January 7. One of the terrorists was shot dead in the resultant exchange of fire while the multi-storeyed building housing the IT office caught fire during the gun-battle. At least 11 people were killed, including six members of a family who were burnt alive, and 14 were injured during sectarian clashes on January 8 at Gilgit in the Northern Areas of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) where a curfew was imposed and troops deployed to restore law and order. According to Daily Times, the clashes occurred after unidentified people shot at the vehicle of Agha Ziauddin, Shia community leader and priest of the main Gilgit mosque. Two of his bodyguards and one of the assailants were killed instantly. Sources said Ziauddin was also shot and was in serious condition. The Shias later reportedly set ablaze several Government and private buildings and torched the home of Forest Officer, Taighun Nabi, burning him and five people present in his house to death. In another attack, local Health Department chief, Dr Sher Wali, was shot by a mob. A male passer-by was also hit and later died.

Unidentified people blew up a gas pipeline again at Sui gas field in the Balochistan province on January 9, killing six people, including two Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel, and injuring 11 others. According to Daily Times, several men attacked the gas field with mortars, rockets and machine guns, which lasted for more than six hours. A 36-inch diameter pipe supplying gas to the Punjab and Sindh provinces was reportedly destroyed in the attack and gas supply to Multan, Faisalabad, Muzaffarabad and other cities was suspended. Media reports, quoting security force (SF) sources, said that at least five SF personnel were killed and over 150 inmates at the District Prison near Triveni Chowk in Kailali have escaped following clashes between Maoist insurgents and SFs on February 8. Around 700-800 heavily armed insurgents are reported to have attacked the District Police Office, Regional Police Office and the branch of Nepal Rashtra Bank in Dhangadhi. Reports added that a total of 168 inmates, including central leader of the Maoists, Tilak Sharma alias Himal, regional leaders, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and Ram Prasad Timilsena, were inside the prison during the time of clashes, even as 17 inmates have reported back to the authorities after the clashes. According to Daily Excelsior, the two terrorists forced their entry into the Revenue Complex while throwing a grenade and firing upon the guards, at 1500 hours. Three police personnel were killed in the initial round of firing and equal number sustained injuries. Both terrorists were shot dead in the subsequent gun-battle. Around 250 people, including the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir Range), were in the building at the time of the attack. This was the second Fidayeen attack of the year in Kashmir valley. A spokesperson of the Al Badr told local news agencies over telephone that cadres of his outfit had carried out the Fidayeen attack. He reportedly identified them as Irfan Bhai and Sikandar Bhai, residents of Gujarat in Pakistan.

Official sources said the troops observed movement of a group of five to six terrorists trying to infiltrate into Indian Territory from the LoC near Cheel Post in the Mendhar sector at 12.30 am (IST). In the ensuing gun-battle, soldiers of the 25 Infantry Division killed three infiltrators, reportedly belonging to the Harkat-ul-Jehadi-e-Islami (HuJI) outfit. Three AK rifles with 15 magazines and 270 rounds of ammunition, one damaged Chinese pistol with 10 rounds, four hand grenades, four grenade launchers, some communication systems and Rupees 7000 in Indian currency were recovered from the incident site. According to Daily Excelsior, this was the fifth infiltration attempt foiled by the Army in Poonch sector during the last one and a half month. !4 infiltrators were killed in the previous four abortive intrusion bids, said official sources.

Police said three men approached the well-guarded mosque and one of them snatched the machinegun of a head constable. They shot him dead while the other police personnel killed one assailant and injured another. The mosque’s private guard, Fida Hussain, was also killed while two police personnel were wounded. The suicide bomber managed to run into the courtyard and blow himself up, killing one worshipper, the witness said, adding that the bomber’s head was decapitated and looked of African origin.
