Two Army soldiers and a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) ‘area commander’ were killed in a gun-battle at Bhati Dhar forests in the Chatral area of Mendhar sub-division in Poonch District on January 1 while a group of five militants was still trapped in the area, Daily Excelsior reported. Official sources said troops of Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group personnel had cordoned off Bhati Dhar forests two days back after receiving specific information that a group of six JeM militants had taken shelter there. In the evening of January 1, the militants reportedly opened fire on Army personnel, who retaliated. In the subsequent encounter between the two sides which continued for more than two hours, two soldiers and JeM ‘area commander’ Abdul Gul were killed. Enforcement of Army and police have been rushed to Bhati Dhar forests in search of the five remaining militants.

United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants triggered serial bomb blasts in three different areas of Guwahati city, killing five persons, including a minor, and injuring 50 others on January 1, according to Assam Tribune. Of the five dead, two were identified as Amal Das (45) and Kohil Sheikh (7). The first explosion took place around 2:25 PM (IST) in Birubari followed by high-intensity explosions in the Bhootnath area (5:25PM) and Bhangagarh area (5:40PM). The blasts were triggered hours before the scheduled arrival of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram. “From prima facie evidences collected from the spot, it appears to be the handiwork of suspected ULFA militants,” said Additional Superintendent of Police of Guwahati City, Debojit Deori. “The Birubari bomb, which was planted in a GMC dustbin near the Assam Association of Deaf office, was a low-intensity one. However, the subsequent blasts were aimed to cause maximum damage as they were planted in crowded areas,” added Deori. Another unnamed Police official claimed that the bomb in the Bhootnath area was planted in a bicycle. Director-General of Police (DGP) G.M. Srivastav told The Hindu: “We had information that some cadres of the ULFA’s 709 battalion have entered the city to trigger blasts and we were hot on their trail. Under pressure in the form of stepped-up security, they dumped one bomb at a garbage bin in Birubari locality.” The DGP said the ULFA wanted to demonstrate its presence ahead of Chidambaram’s visit.

A suspected United States missile strike on January 1 killed at least five Taliban militants in South Waziristan Agency, Daily Times reported. A local security official told AFP a US drone had fired three missiles in the Karikot area of Wana in the agency - the same spot where eight suspected militants were killed in a US drone strike 10 days ago. One of the missiles struck a vehicle, killing all five passengers, another security official said, adding those killed were known Taliban militants. The other two missiles hit a hilltop house that was a known Taliban hideout, but was empty at the time of the strike, the officials said. One militant was injured in the strike, they added. AP reported that at least three of those killed in the attack on the vehicle were from a Central Asian country.

At least four rockets landed near a court and the Government complex in Khar, the main town in Bajaur, local administration chief Israr Khan told AFP. “The attack left four civilians dead and 16 injured,” Khan added. APP reported officials as saying that at least six rockets were fired on Civil Colony, where Government offices and residential quarters for officials are located. Troops advancing towards Kilinochchi captured the key Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) garrison of Paranthan in the morning of January 1 following hours of fighting that killed over 50 militants, according to Colombo Page. Defence authorities said the battle for Paranthan began two days ago when the troop’s armour, artillery and infantry battalions launched a concerted assault on the militants holed up in the strategic town. Troops, supported by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), entered Paranthan in the morning of December 31 and reportedly encountered stiff resistance from the LTTE. Troops have also cut-off the vital access routes towards Paranthan along the Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) road from North and South, the military said. Troops are now consolidating defences and advancing further east of the Paranthan junction, security sources said. Defence sources said capture of Paranthan would open up access routes to the remaining LTTE defences at Vaddakkachchi and Puthukkudiyiruppu areas on the Paranthan-Mullaitivu (A-35) road and isolating another LTTE stronghold of Elephant Pass located between the Jaffna peninsula and Kilinochchi.

Four militants were killed and three others injured when a CIA-operated spy plane fired two Hellfire missiles at a Government-run girls’ school in the Ladha sub-division of South Waziristan Agency (SWA) on January 2, the second attack in as many days. Tribal sources told The News that two pilotless spy planes were seen hovering over the Mehsud-inhabited areas before the air strikes on the school and a nearby-parked car. The drone reportedly fired two Hellfire missiles, one of them hitting the building of the Government Girls’ Primary School, Maidan Naray, and the other destroying the car owned by the militants. According to sources, four militants reportedly belonging to the Punjab, died and three others sustained injuries in the attack. They said dozens of militants later arrived and retrieved the bodies of their slain colleagues and injured from the rubble of the school building. Sources said the school building was owned by a local tribesman, Maqbool Mehsud Shamankhel, but was occupied by the militants who were using it as their base camp. Tribal sources said dozens of Government and private schools had been going without teachers and students in the Mehsud-inhabited areas and were now being used as training camps by the militants or for other purposes by the owners.

Security Forces on January 5 reached Elephant Pass with the 58 Division troops capturing the entire southern part of it and further advancing towards the North to capture it the entirely, Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka said, according to Daily News. The troops captured Thamilamadam, the causeway to the south of the Elephant Pass, adds Sri Lanka Army (SLA). “They are in the process of advancing further north to take full control of the Elephant Pass area soon,” a senior military official told Daily News, adding, “With the capture of Elephant Pass South the troops are now in control of the entire Jaffna lagoon. They have been left with only the coastal road from Cheminpiyanpattu to Mullaitivu which gets flooded most of the time.” Heavy fighting erupted in the East of Paranthan and Elephant Pass South for the past two days as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) made their maximum effort to stop the advance of the troops towards Elephant Pass and Murusamudai, East of Paranthan. At least 40 Taliban militants were killed and an unspecified number of them wounded in Mohmand Agency on January 11 as paramilitary troops repulsed a pre-dawn attack by about 600 militants coming from the Afghan border, Daily Times reported. The attackers – mostly foreigners, and supported by local Taliban – attacked Frontier Corps (FC) positions in Mamad Gatt at about 2am (PST). “Frontier Corps troops repulsed a massive attack by militants on one of its locations in the area,” the military said in a statement, adding that “severe fighting continued through the night”. Six soldiers were also killed and seven sustained injuries in the fighting. The Taliban fired mortars and rockets at an FC camp and subsequently used small arms to fire on a nearby checkpoint, an unnamed military official told AP. The attackers were eventually driven off, but scattered skirmishes continued, he said. Most of the attackers fled under heavy military fire, a security official told the AFP. Some of the Taliban militants surrendered, a military spokesman claimed later, without giving a specific figure. According to sources, militants from Waziristan also took part in the attack, Dawn reported. Officials said it was one of the biggest militant attacks since the Security Forces launched an operation in the region. Sources also said that five soldiers were missing, but an official in Peshawar, the NWFP capital, denied the report. The building of a school near the targeted FC location was also reportedly damaged.

According to Daily Times, four persons, including three soldiers, were killed in a remote-controlled bomb blast in the Dera Bugti District on January 14. The Baloch Republican Army (BRA) claimed responsibility for the incident. The bomb, planted in the Sui Colony main bazaar, targeted a van carrying paramilitary personnel. Three soldiers and a shopkeeper died instantly. BRA spokesman Sarbaz Baloch told Daily Times that the Security Force personnel had gone to the Sui bazaar to remove posters of their slain leader, Nawab Akbar Bugti. He apologised for the civilian’s death saying it was unintentional. "We are sorry for the killing of an innocent man. But we would like to appeal to the people of Balochistan to stay away from the check-posts and vehicles of the police, FC [Frontier Corps] and the military, because they are our prime targets… Attacks can take place any time. We should not be blamed next time a civilian dies in an attack on officials. People have to be vigilant," he said.

Troops backed by warplanes and helicopter gunships killed at least 38 Taliban militants in an ongoing military operation in the Mohmand Agency on January 20 - raising the Taliban death toll to 60 over 24 hours, Daily Times reported. A statement said the Frontier Corps (FC) had advanced and secured Darwazgai-Lakaro-Mamad Ghat Road in the operation and “militant strongholds of Habibzai and Mulakhel were destroyed.” It also said that ‘leading commanders’, Umar Khitab, Qari Mumtaz, Haroon Rashid, Bilal, Yaqub, Yar Syed, Yousuf and Hamza, were among the dead. Troops have also “engaged Taliban strongholds of Krair and Chingai”, it added. The agency quoted another unnamed official as saying that the Taliban suffered losses in attacks by “war planes, helicopter gunships and use of artillery and shelling by tanks.” “We [also] have confirmation that commander Anwar Sayed and commander Shakirullah were killed in the operation today,” he said, adding that troops demolished or torched at least 27 houses belonging to tribesmen who offered shelter to the Taliban. A paramilitary official told Dawn that the FC and Mohmand Rifles, backed by warplanes, helicopter gunships, tanks and artillery, targeted suspected hideouts of militants in five villages of Lakaro and Pandyali sub-divisions, said to be stronghold of the Taliban’s Mohmand chapter. Three civilians, including the owner of a restaurant and his two sons, were killed in Danish Kol, residents said. 12 civilians were reportedly injured in the air strike and mortar attacks. According to a press release issued by the Frontier Corps headquarters in Peshawar late on January 20-night, 60 militants, including several key local commanders, were killed in the operation since the previous night. At least 100 persons were killed in artillery exchanges between military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the last one week, an unnamed Government official working in the area controlled by the LTTE said on January 22. "Around 30 people died in the morning today. Personally I saw that nearly 100 people have died from Saturday [January 17] up to today. More than 300 have been injured," Mullaitivu District Government Agent Emelda Sukumar told Reuters. Sukumar, who spoke from Mullaitivu, is in charge of Government services in the LTTE-held area, said, "When people occupy particular places, the LTTE send shells from that area, and then army also targets the same area. So people cannot escape from the shelling." As reported earlier, the pro-LTTE Website Tamil Net on January 22 claimed that 66 civilians were killed and more than 200 wounded in Sri Lanka Army’s artillery fire within the last three days in Mullaitivu District. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara denying this said, "Today we stopped firing and took 46 patients from that hospital through the Red Cross, so that kind of humanitarian operation is underway. We didn't fire into the safe zone because we wanted civilians to come." Earlier, on January 21, the military had announced a 32 square kilometers Safe Zone near Mullaitivu and dropped leaflets urging civilians to go there.

The guest house adjacent to Khalil’s house in Zyaraki, five kilometers west of Mirali, was razed to the ground in the attack. More than 1000 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed in the intense fighting in the Mullaittivu District since February 1, the pro—LTTE Website Tamil Net quoted LTTE sources as saying on February 6. Hundreds of SLA crack commandos were drawn into Mannakandal and Keappaapulavu 'boxes' and were cut off from their rear supplies during a pre-emptive strike by the LTTE, resulting in the death of these soldiers. An arms storage, which was full of weapons as the SLA was in full preparation to launch its 'final assault' on Puthukkudyiruppu was also seized by the LTTE commandos engaged in the pre-emptive strike, the report added. The sources further revealed that there were at least 20 mortars, thousands of shells, several hundreds of assault rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), RPG launchers and a conservative estimate of one million rounds were among the arms and ammunitions seized. The LTTE had emptied the store of stockpiled arms and ammunitions by the time the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombed the location of its own arsenal, sources added further.

Nine members of a Bara-based militant group were killed in an encounter with the Police and the Qaumi Lashkar (militia) comprising armed villagers when they allegedly attempted to kidnap the chief official of Bazidkhel union council near Peshawar, the NWFP capital, on February 4, The News reported. Three Policemen sustained injuries in the first incident of its kind in which the Police and villagers jointly countered the militants operating in Peshawar. Police and villagers said that members of the Mangal Bagh-led Lashkar-e-Islam entered the Bazidkhel village in two cars and a motorbike in a bid to kidnap Faheem, the local union council chief. In the ensuing encounter, seven attackers were killed. A source said two more militants were killed near Badaber when they were escaping on a motorcycle. Meanwhile, Lashkar-e-Islam chief Mangal Bagh threatened the Bazidkhel villagers with reprisal if found to be involved in killing nine of his men. Earlier, a spokesman for the Lashkar-e-Islam denied that the slain men wanted to attack the Badaber Police station. However, spokesman Misri Khan conceded that their men were on their way to Bazidkhel to take action against some criminals and elements opposed to their organisation. “Ours is a peaceful organisation that never attacked the security forces and the police. Had they gone there to attack the Badaber police, they would have first attacked Hayatabad and Sarband police stations,” he claimed. The spokesman alleged that their men were stopped at the Frontier Corps check-post, arrested and later killed by the Police and criminals from Bazidkhel.

It is a terrorist attack aimed at Shias to create unrest,” Shaukat Javed, the Inspector General of Punjab Police, told AFP. “It seems like a suicide blast… If something is planted or hurled, it leaves a crater. There is no crater at the site of the incident,” Javed told a TV channel. “According to eyewitnesses, nothing was thrown from outside… It looks as if someone was standing at the site of the blast and waiting for the procession and he blew himself up as the procession came close to him,” District official Jawed Mehmood Bhatti told Reuters.

At least 30 suspected militants were killed and three others sustained injuries in a missile strike on a refugee camp in the Kurram Agency on February 16. According to Daily Times, the three missiles believed to have been fired from a US unmanned aircraft destroyed a house used by a local Taliban commander. It was the first known drone strike in Kurram, AP reported. An unnamed intelligence official said field informants reported that Taliban showed up at the village bazaar and ordered 30 caskets. However, political authorities have only confirmed 18 deaths from four missiles fired by two unmanned aircraft, while the local Taliban have claimed a death toll of 12. “Afghan Taliban were holding an important meeting there when the missiles were fired,” an intelligence official in the area told Reuters. After the attack, the Taliban surrounded the area and were not allowing anyone near, witnesses said. “They have taken nine bodies to Afghanistan while the rest of them are being buried here,” one intelligence official said. According to local sources, former Afghan premier Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s Hizb-e-Islami was running the refugee camp. Kurram’s top administrator, Arshad Majeed Mohmand, confirmed the strike and said according to his information three missiles were fired, but he had no details about the casualties, Reuters added. Surkh Pul, the locality of the drone attack, was once reserved for Afghan refugees and a school was built for their children, The News reported. After the forced repatriation of the Afghan refugees from the area, the militants reportedly started arriving there and rebuild some of the damaged houses. Sources said the US planes targeted the school and the adjacent house, where around three dozen militants were residing. Taliban commanders said majority of the slain militants belonged to Afghanistan’s Khost province and they were secretly laid to rest at Ahmadi Shama graveyard near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Lower Kurram.

Five people were killed and 17 injured in a car bomb blast outside the Hujra (male guest house) of the union council chief in Bazidkhel village of Peshawar in the afternoon of February 17, The News reported. Faheemur Rahman, the union council chief of Bazidkhel, eight kilometres south of Peshawar on Kohat Road, alleged that the Mangal Bagh-led Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) was involved in this “cheap act” of terrorism. Eyewitnesses said the blast occurred in a car parked on a street near the Hujra of Rahman. The blast also destroyed two cars and damaged six buildings. “It could be linked to the killing of nine tribesmen in Bazidkhel. Nine members of the LI were killed by a Qaumi Lashkar (militia), comprising residents of Bazidkhel and the nearby villages, when they reportedly made a failed attempt to kidnap Rahman on February 4. Mangal Bagh had warned through his FM radio of revenge, directing the villagers to hoist black flags atop their houses or every villager would be considered equally involved in the murder of his men. The villagers of the nearby towns had constituted a Qaumi Lashkar after threats from the Bara-based militant group and other militant organisations.

32 persons were killed and 145 others injured when a suicide bomber exploded himself in the funeral procession of a slain employee of the Tehsil Municipal Administration near the busy Shubra Square in Dera Ismail Khan on February 20, The News reported. Sources said the funeral procession of local Shia community leader Sher Zaman alias Shera, who was killed in firing by unidentified persons on February 19, was heading towards Kotly Imam Hussain for his Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayer) and burial when a suicide bomber ran into the mourners and blew himself up. While there was no immediate claim for the blast, Police and witnesses blamed sectarian extremists. “We cannot immediately say who could be behind the bombing but it appeared to be linked with the ongoing sectarian attacks,” said Saadullah Khan, the local police station chief. “The head and a foot of the suicide bomber has been found at the scene. The bomber appeared to be 20 years old with a beard,” he added. The suicide bombing consequently led to rioting and firing in the air by some angry funeral participants. They reportedly targeted an approaching Police patrol vehicle, prompting the authorities to impose an indefinite curfew in the city. In the Sikligara area, a Police mobile van was also fired at. However, the Policemen in the vehicle escaped unhurt, sources said. Riots broke out in the city following the blast, and Police confirmed that two people were killed in the firing that followed the suicide bombing, according to Daily Times. Separately, Police said they had arrested three of the four people suspected of killing Sher Zaman.

Tribal sources said dozens of militants arrived there and later took control of the area besides surrounding the targeted house. Locals said all those killed and injured were native tribesmen. However, the sources claimed that foreign citizens were also among the dead. The compound had underground bunkers and was in the area controlled by Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud’s tribe, an unnamed official said, Daily Times reported. “It was a Taliban sanctuary,” he said. Citing field informants, other intelligence officials told the Associated Press the compound was a training facility. At least four of the dead were foreigners, they said.
