The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Sindh Police on January 18 arrested a student of Karachi's Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw (NED) University of Engineering and Technology over charges of "international terror financing", reports Dawn. “The CTD arrested Hafiz Mohammed Omer bin Khalid over international terror financing charges when he was trying to flee the city,” CTD Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Omar Shahid Hamid told a press conference at his office. According to Hamid, the held suspect is a final year student at the university. “He was involved in sending money to families of militants linked with the global [militant] Islamic State group in Syria,” said the officer. According to the CTD, Khalid used to provide cash to an associate, named Zia, in Hyderabad, who converted it into dollars before sending it to Syria. He has sent over PKR one million so far, added Hamid.

Three members of the Lyari gang war were arrested by the Rangers during separate operations in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, on January 30, reports The Express Tribune. In an intelligence-based operation, carried out with the Police, the Paramilitary Force claimed, they arrested a most wanted Lyari gangster, Ismail alias Petra. According to a Rangers spokesperson, they had received a tip-off about Ismail - who had fled from Karachi - hiding in Mominabad in Orangi Town. The Rangers carried out a joint operation with the Police in the wee hours of January 30 and arrested Ismail from Mominabad. Later, Ismail was booked in cases of murder, attempted murder, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, Police encounter, sale of drugs and other crime. The Rangers arrested two suspected Lyari gangsters, identified as Ismail Patni and Sameer Shaikh, said to be working for an on the run Lyari gang war leader, Ahmed Ali Magsi on January 30, reports The Express Tribune. The arrests were made during joint operations with the Police, conducted in on the basis of tip-offs. The arrested men were caught with the help of CCTV footage, said a statement issued by the Rangers, adding that Patni and Shaikh had barged into the office of Crown Builders in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on December 7, 2020, demanded INR 5 million in extortion and given death threats, all the while brandishing a pistol and a hand grenade. Law enforcers seized weapons from the arrested suspects and handed them over to the Police.

Police on March 11 arrested a suspected Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Swat chapter militant, who was allegedly planning to carry out a suicide attack on police training centre, from Malir town area of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports Dawn. “Steel Town police arrested the suspect, Khalilullah alias Qari, who is an active member of a banned outfit,” said Malir Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Irfan Bahadur. The SSP revealed that the militant joined outfit on persuasion of his friend in 2007 in Swat and went into hiding after the military operation in the valley. “The suspect received military training in Afghanistan. He conducted reconnaissance of Razzaqabad police training centre in 2012 along with another militant, Javed Swati, and was also involved in firing on a vehicle during bank robbery in Orangi Town in the same year,” SSP added.

The Police on April 20 arrested one Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) militant during a raid on his hideout in Saeedabad area near Northern Bypass of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports Dawn. In a statement, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) said that a key BLA cadre, Asif Brohi alias Don, was arrested along with an AK-47 assault rifle. “Asif Brohi alias Abdullah is not only the facilitator of several terrorist attacks but also a key man of the BLA,” said the CTD statement. “Investigators were closely monitoring the suspect and finally found his connection with several terrorist activities. Between 2011 and 2019, he killed six people in different Balochistan districts. He executed these jobs on the directives of BLA commander Shafiq ur Rehman Mengal. Apart from killing different individuals, he was actively involved in collecting extortion to raise funds for the banned outfit.” The statement carried details of the suspect’s activities since 2012 saying he collected extortion amounting to PKR 56.7 million from different businessmen and traders of Balochistan and in couple of instances he had even kidnapped his targets to get the ransom.

Kumar has confessed during interrogation about involvement in the aforementioned blasts, target killing of citizens, vandalism and setting hundreds of vehicles ablaze during strikes, claimed Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Irfan Bahadur, adding, that Kumar is a highly educated individual as well as an expert in making different types of explosive devices and bombs. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East Qamar Jiskani said a raid was conducted in the SITE Superhighway area on intelligence information, which led to the arrest of the suspects. Two hand grenades and a pistol were seized from the possession of the suspects who were identified as Anas Khan and Firdous, he said. The SSP said the suspects received training in Afghanistan. Anas was previously arrested in Afghanistan and remained in the country’s Pul-e-Charkhi prison from 2007 to 2012, he revealed. Moreover, he said the suspect’s father served as a TTP cadre from Waziristan and was killed in 2020.
