Additional Inspector General (AIG) Sindh Police Ghulam Qadir Thebo said that Police on January 28 had arrested one of the five suspects, identified as Mohammad Mansoor, involved in the murder of Karachi University Dean Islamic Studies Faculty Dr Shakeel Auj, reports Dawn. In September 2014, Dr Shakeel Auj was shot dead in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town. "Five men were involved in the offence and one of them, Mohammad Mansoor, has been arrested," the AIG claimed. He said the arrested suspect had not only conceded to his involvement in the murder but had also admitted responsibility for firing on Rangers personnel in 2014. Mansoor was also responsible for killing the Principal of Degree Science College Liaquatabad Professor Syed Sibte Jafar in 2013.

Rangers on February 8 arrested a target killer, Abdul Rafique alias Kaein, during a raid in the Mehmoodabad area of Jamshed Town in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports The News. Kaein is Mehmoodabad sector in-charge of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). During the initial interrogation he confessed to his involvement in the May 12, 2007 massacre. Rafique disclosed to the interrogators that a team of target killers, headed by Amir alias Dawani of Manzoor Colony, used to take orders from him. He has also confessed to numerous killings and gunbattles with Ashok and Kobra group in Chanesar Goth area of Jamshed Town.

Police, in coordination with the District Intelligence Agency, on February 18 arrested more than 50 Afghan nationals in Sukkur District under a security plan chalked out to implement the National Action Plan (NAP), reports Dawn. According a survey conducted recently, around 9,900 students were enrolled at 226 religious seminaries in the District, said District Intelligence bureau Manzoor Jamali, adding that 98 of them were unregistered institutions. Police arrested one of the militants, identified as Hashmi Ishaq, after an exchange of fire while his accomplice, identified as Khalid, managed to escape under the cover of fire. Police claimed to have recovered one of the pistols from the arrested suspect. During initial interrogation, Ishaq told the Police that he came to Karachi from his hometown, Peshawar (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), around three days ago and stayed with Khalid at a house in Sohrab Goth area of Gadap Town. Ishaq recalled how Khalid told him that Hashwani allegedly committed blasphemy and that Ishaq should come to Karachi to kill him.

Shahbaz Rangers on February 20 claimed to have arrested two Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in a raid on a Karachi-bound coach coming from Peshawar (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on February 19, reports Dawn. Sindh Rangers Commander Colonel Abdul Ghaffar said in press briefing at the Shahbaz Rangers headquarters that the 60-Wing personnel on a tip-off carried out a raid on the coach while it was passing through an area near Mirpur Mathelo town of Ghotki District. They picked up two suspected passengers and during the subsequent interrogation it emerged that they belonged to the TTP, said Colonel Ghaffar. The Rangers commander said that they were fleeing to Karachi to escape death in the ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb and intended to fly to a foreign country, probably the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Col Ghaffar spoke of some startling disclosures by the suspects during the interrogation but declined to share them with the media at this juncture. Police claimed to have recovered five hand grenades, two TT pistols, 10 kilogram of explosives, 10 kilogram of chemicals and a bundle of detonating cords from their possession. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jamshoro Tariq Wilayat said that the raid was conducted in the area which is predominantly inhabited by the Pakhtun community and the militants had been living in the locality for the past two months. Gul Zareen was facilitating the other two, who had arrived from South Waziristan Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), he disclosed. "Bahauddin and Shahuddin belong to South Waziristan's Kot Kai area and both are associated with TTP Shaharyar group," Wilayat said. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) District West Azfar Mehshar said that the weapons were Indian-made (inscribed with SA-Local Rest Indian). The involved groups had been identified and two suspects, including the owner of the house, had been taken into custody, who belonged to a political party, he said. Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah announced a reward of PKR 3 million for the SSP-West and his team for conducting the raid in Orangi Town and seizing the arms and ammunition. Police killed five Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in a shootout during checking in Zia Colony of Orangi Town in provincial capital Karachi on July 29, reported The News. According to details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Azfar Mehesar of District West said that a Mominabad Police team was patrolling when they saw some suspects in a Hi-roof van. When the Police signalled the van driver to pull over, the suspects opened fire. As the Police retaliated, more companions of the terrorists who were coming behind the van on a motorcycle attacked the Police, wounding Police Constable (PC) Naseem. After the encounter ended, five suspects were arrested in an injured condition but their accomplices escaped under the cover of darkness. A ready-to-use IED weighing about four kilograms was found from the van. Explosive material, a detonating cord, nut bolts, nails, batteries, three TT pistols, a Kalashnikov, hand grenades, ball bombs and some other explosives were recovered. Police on August 3 claimed to have arrested three alleged extortionists, who it said tended to target doctors and pharmaceutical companies and have links with a South Africa-based group, reports Dawn. “Police arrested two suspected extortionists, identified as Wasif Rafiq and Faizan alias Matto, from Khawaja Ajmair Nagri, and seized computers from their custody,” said Karachi-West Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Feroze Shah. “This is an international gang of extortionists who mostly targeted doctors and pharmaceutical companies,” added the Police Officer. The officer further revealed, “They were involved in extortion during the last five years but they tended to use names of Lyari gang-war outfits and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, while sending extortion chits to doctors, pharmas and traders.”

Rangers also arrested Shahid alias Kala, an active worker of MQM Unit-31, who had earlier confessed six murders during initial interrogation when he was arrested in September 2014. Mubin, the committee member of MQM Unit-20, also faced arrest as he had confessed to numerous target killings, extortion, arson, rioting and other heinous crimes when he was earlier arrested in May 2013. According to Karachi CTD in-charge Mazhar Mashwani, suspect Muhammad Owais Raheel was a graduate of the reputable NED University of Engineering and Technology as well as held a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the prestigious Institute of Business Administration (IBA) in Karachi. Mashwani further told that a large number of pamphlets were recovered from Owais’s possession. It was Owais responsibility to distribute leaflets of HuT in mosques located in Clifton and Defence areas of the city. Owais told the interrogators that he stayed in contact with the help of the communication software ‘Viber’ with his other companions, who are residents of Malir, Landhi and Model Colony in Karachi. Dawn adds that Owais Raheel, targeted educated youngsters in the Defence and Clifton areas in order to use them “for illegal activities” with a view to implementing “Khilafa” in the country. The officials claimed to have arrested one more suspect, identified as Pir Ali, who, according to the authorities, is a brother of slain Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Bilal Sheikh. Pir Ali was arrested in Rashid Godil attack case from Phase-6 of Defence Housing Authority (DHA). The investigation officials said the accused arrested in the case earlier had confessed to executing the attack on Godil and receiving PKR 200,000 each for the job. Godil was attacked on August 18, 2015 in Bahadurabad area of Gulshan Town.

The LEA also recovered weapons from their possession. According to the joint interrogation report compiled after the revelations of Tahir Minhas, the suspected gang leader of Safoora attackers, Mistri was the man who was wearing Police uniform along with Abdullah Mansuri and the two men stopped the bus in Scheme 33 area of the city. The report further says Mistri after shooting the driver, took control of the steering. While he kept driving the bus carrying members of Ismaili community, his other gang members were busy in gruesome shooting of innocent people. Kamran Gujjar was assigned to coordinate with and facilitate the gang members.

They also claimed that the suspects were planning some major acts of terrorism to avenge the killing of LeJ leader Malik Ishaq in an encounter in Punjab. The three militants were identified as Zubair, Asif and Umair. An official of the Counter-Terrorism Department, Ali Raza said that four TT pistols, three kilograms of explosives and four “ball bombs” were seized from their possession. “The held militants disclosed that Mufti Saddam of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had sent them to Karachi to establish a group here for taking revenge of the killing of Malik Ishaq,” Raza disclosed. The CTD official said that the suspects established a ‘terrorist group’ in collaboration with some other banned organisations and they were planning some big terrorist activities in the city in near future.

Law Enforcement Agencies on December 20 claimed to have detained at least 24 suspects, including militants belonging to banned outfits during raids across provincial capital Karachi, reports Dawn. According to details, Pakistan Rangers Sindh carried out targeted raids in different areas and arrested 20 suspects, including members of banned outfits, said a spokesperson of the paramilitary force, reports Dawn. The ‘operation’ against criminal elements in Pakistan’s commercial hub was initiated back in September 2013 after the federal cabinet empowered Rangers to lead a targeted advance with the support of police against criminals already identified by federal military and civilian agencies for their alleged involvement in targeted killings, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and terrorism in Karachi.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Umer Tufail said that the Police on a tip-off conducted operation in Kandhkot area during which a terrorist belonging to an outlawed outfit with head bounty of PKR 500,000 and involved in blowing up railway tracks, gas pipelines and other terror activities in Sindh and Balochistan provinces was arrested. The Police recovered weapons, two-kilogram explosive material, three detonators and two batteries from the possession of the arrested terrorist.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Shikarpur, Masood Bangash, said that four terrorists, Abdul Rehman, Siraj Brohi, Siraj Langa and Abdul Ghani Brohi, were arrested in a raid.
