Chief of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) Aurangzaib Farooqui and three others were booked in December 31, 2011 murder case of Shia leader Askari Raza on Rashid Minhas Road in Karachi, while Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the Crime Investigation Department’s (CID) Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) Chaudhry Aslam also came under interrogation. DIG South Commander Shaukat said that SSP Aslam was automatically suspended since he came under investigation. ASWJ spokesman Taj Hanfi termed the decision as conspiracy against his organisation. The Shia protesters were demanding lodging of an FIR against the killers and taking prompt action against Chaudhry Aslam, who is said to be involved in killing.

a detained Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Karachi chief, who was arrested by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on January 5, 2012, confessed to his involvement in the blast at the house of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister that had claimed the life of his son. Police claimed to have arrested four militants, including TTP Karachi chief Abdul Qayyum Mehsud, Muhammad Sharif, Habib Mehsud and Usman. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) CID Fayyaz Khan said the arrested TTP militants were trained in Waziristan and were involved in several high profile cases.

TTP Karachi Chapter ‘commander’ Abdul Qayuum and his three accomplices were arrested in Karachi along with a suicide jacket, a rocket, a BM missile, two Kalashnikovs and bullets of different types, reported Dawn. The Additional Inspector General (AIG) Crime Investigation Department (CID) said that the accused were involved in the killing of 20 people including a Police Officer. The IG also said that the accused had accepted their involvement in the bombings of December 9 and 10, 2011 and also informed the Police about the presence of two more suicide bombers in Karachi.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Mazhar Mashwani of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), along with his team conducted a raid at Regal Chowk, Saddar and arrested two target killers namely Fahim and Shakeel, besides recovering their weapons. He said the accused persons during initial course of investigation confessed to have killed three persons, including two within Kalakot Police precincts and one in Kharadar over non-payment of extortion. The accused were reportedly involved in several crimes, including extortion, target killing and abductions, and they belong to one of the notorious Lyari gangs.

the Crime Investigation Department (CID) claimed to have arrested an activist of a Sindh National Party (SNP), identified as Saifal Bugti alias Suriya over the charge of committing terrorist activities in Sindh from Quaid-e-Azam Park located in Gulshan-e-Hadeed area in Steel Town of Karachi. The Police also recovered a TT pistol and several rounds of bullets from his possession. During initial course of investigation the accused revealed that one Shafiq Burfat associated with the SNP decided to start struggle for separating Sindh and for the purpose he directed Bugti to indulge in terrorist activities in Sindh. He said Burfat was running active terrorist network in interior Sindh. According to details, Bugti along with his other accomplices, including Asghar Ali Shah, Nisar, Nawaz Chandio, Maqbool and Ghulam Rasool blew up the railway track at Dhabejee in Mirpur Bathoro tehsil (revenue unit) in Thatta District.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Mashwani said Ahmed was the most wanted terrorist and Sindh Government had tagged PKR 0.5 million reward on his arrest. He said that the accused was involved in several heinous crimes all over Pakistan. The SP said Ahmed was involved in sending funds to his organisation and also provided help to arrested militants. During his interrogation, he confessed that he had given money to Usman Choto for killing of Shia leader in Karachi but Choto was arrested before committing the crime. Officer said the accused name was also listed in CID Red Book list and added that he further confessed that he was involved in several surveillances of those people who were killed in target killings.

Officials of the Anti-Extremism Cell (AEC) on January 14 claimed to have foiled a terror plot to attack the main Chehlum procession, and arrested a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander, Mohammad Daud, who was involved in a number of terrorist cases in Ittehad Town in Karachi, reported The News. The militant outfit had planned to target the Chehlum procession of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), which is being held in Karachi. The Additional Inspector General of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Sindh, Ghulam Shabbir Sheikh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammad Aslam Khan of the AEC said he had received a tip-off about the presence of a wanted TTP terrorist in the Moachko area. When Law Enforcement Agencies raided the hideout in Ittehad Town, militants opened fire at them. The Police retaliated, and, after an encounter, arrested Mohammad Daud, alias Waleed, and shifted him to the interrogation unit. The Police also recovered 50 kilograms of explosives, four suicide jackets, one light machinegun, a rocket launcher, two rockets, 10 hand grenades, two Kalashnikovs, two TT pistols, 1,000 bullets, a 20-foot detonating cord, and five detonators. The suspect revealed that he was trained in Waziristan to handle arms, including rocket launchers, and make suicide jackets. Daud was said to be involved in an attack on Security Forces in Waziristan, and had been sent to Karachi to organise a group to perform terrorist attacks on Government buildings and shrines. He disclosed that his group was responsible for the suicide attack on Abdullah Shah Ghazi Shrine in 2010 and the Sea View Blast of 2011. He said the plan to target the shrine had been made in Waziristan and that he had been given PKR 20,000 by a TTP commander there to complete the job.

The others were identified as Fahim-ul-Haq alias Bihari, Tahir alias Mota, Abid alias Abbasi, Arif, Enayatullah alias Maya and Rafiq alias Inam. Mehmood Babar had also been arrested earlier and was released in 2008 after facing an imprisonment for at least seven years. The AEC chief Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chaudhry Aslam claimed to have recovered 125 kilogrammes of highly explosive material, seven suicide jackets, a rocket launcher, six rocket shells, two Kalashinkoves, four TT pistols, three 9mm pistols, 50 feet detonator wire, three detonators and hundreds of bullets from their possession. According to details of the planning of arrested alleged LeJ militants, it was revealed that the terrorists first had to hit a van of the school belonging to Shia sect at Mauripur area with an explosive laden vehicle and at the same time, their other accomplices had to attack the Central Jail with another explosive laden vehicle. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) CID Kamran Fazal told media that arrested militants were involved in many cases of sectarian and political killings. He said that during initial investigation, the accused confessed to kill rival persons on the directives of LeJ Pakistan Chief Asif Chotu from Waziristan. DIG Fazal said that most of them had come to Karachi from the northern region and settled in areas where they don't face language barrier, adding, that leaders of the Awami National Party (ANP) were on their hit list, adds The Times of India. Explaining the movement of terrorists and ammunition within the country, Fazal said that all vehicles travelling to the city cannot be scrutinised as it will cause inconvenience to the passengers. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police East, Shahid Hayat, in a press briefing, said that the illegal arms were seized after the law enforcers caught a bus that was smuggling the items. Earlier, the Police had received a tip that arms were being smuggled from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to the city. DIG East, said that these arms were being smuggled in the city to be used during the Ashura procession in Muharram and the upcoming elections. Superintendent of Police (SP) Investigation Naveed Khawaja deployed his men on the Super Highway and start checking Karachi-bound buses. When the Police signalled one of the vehicles to stop, the driver slammed on the accelerator and tried to speed away. However, the Police managed to chase him down and intercepted the vehicle. The bus driver, Muhammad Fayyaz, and cleaner Dost Muhammad were taken into custody. Three target killers arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Karachi, have confessed to killing 29 persons of Rangers, police, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Aman Committee and MQM-Haqiqi. After receiving information about the whereabouts of the target killer involved in more than 50 murder cases a Police team raided his hideout in Indus Society on Super Highway. On seeing the Police, the suspects opened fire, which was replayed by the Police, leading to an encounter. After an hour-long shootout, the Police arrested the target killer, Ahmed Zia, in an injured condition, while his 10 accomplices managed to flee. The arrested suspects, who are accused of involvement in the 2002 slaying of nine Christian charity workers and two Ahmadi doctors, were trained in Waziristan, said SSP Chaudhary Aslam adding that the suspected leader and his supporters founded LIM. Nine employees of the Christian charity Idara Aman-o-Insaf were killed in a militant attack on their office in Karachi September 25, 2002. Two suspected militants were killed and more than two dozen were taken into custody during a raid in Sohrab Goth and other surrounding areas against the militants involved in the attack on polio vaccination team. Police also recovered huge cache of weapons and stolen vehicles during operation. According to details, at least 300 personnel of Karachi Police and Rapid Response Force were trying to get inside the areas considerably dominated by Karachi chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) when militants offered resistance near Decent Heights Apartment and Malik Agha Hotel. During exchange of fire, two unidentified militants were shot dead during the raid continued for one hour only. Witnesses said that Police team entered inside of different areas of Sohrab Goth including Asma Apartments, Qayyumabad, Sona Gali and Junejo Colony. As Police reached Supermarket area, unidentified militants resorted firing to avoid arrest where during encounter two militants sustained bullet wounds and rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced them as dead. Police claimed to arrest at least 25 suspect militants. Residents of the area when contacted said that militants had had left the areas before the arrival of police, therefore police concluded the operation within an hour. Police claimed to have recovered 5 TT pistols, two shotguns, five cars and four motorbikes.
