The raid was conducted on a lead from Saad Aziz, another accused who has been in Police custody. According to sources, Umer Kathio had formed a network of terrorists in 2011. His task was to facilitate the terrorists of the al Qaeda. The sources further said the he later joined the Islamic State (IS/ also known as Daesh) while his wife runs a network of Daesh in Sindh.

Police on January 5 arrested two suspects involved in various cases, including an attack on an Express News DSNG van on January 17, 2014, which resulted in the death of three media workers, reports The Express Tribune. “The arrested men belong to a group of 10 people that have been active in Karachi since 2014 and were involved in various target killing cases and attacking media persons,” DIG West Feroz Shah said. “The group mainly operated from Orangi Town area of Karachi and consisted of accused Saqib, Naveed, Kashif, Imran, Sarfaraz, Javed Afridi, Qari Rasheed, Qari Mohsin, Rehan and Kamran,” he added. Inspector General (IG) Sindh Police announced a prize money of PKR 1 million for the Police officials who carried out the raids to arrest them.

The officials added that the gang had been active for the past one month. They used to kidnap people by posing themselves as officers of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Police, said Karachi-West Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Feroze Shah. According to the official sources, a boy, identified as Kashan (12), was abducted on March 12, 2016, while he was going to take his tuition classes on Bukhari Commercial in Darakhshan police area. The kidnappers demanded of his family to pay a ransom of PKR 10 million for his release; however, it was later reduced to PKR 0.3 million. When the deal was finalised on a phone call, the kidnappers told the family to come to the Queens Road where they released the boy after receiving the ransom money. After the family approached the RTF, it raided a house near Dastageer area and arrested one kidnapper, Adnan, who disclosed the names of his associates during an investigation. The RTF along with the accused raided a hideout in Defence Phase VIII and arrested the leader, Tafeeq Jagrani, and his other accomplice and found weapons and ransom money on them.

The Police said that the accused were involved in a Police encounter and an attack on army soldiers in Waziristan. The Police recovered a suicide jacket, three TT pistols, four hand grenades and two kilograms of ball bearings from their hideout.The accused were identified as Saif-ur-Rehman alias Buddah, Taj Muhammad alias Salman and Adil. During the initial interrogation, they admitted that they were experts in laying landmines and firing rockets and also recruited youngsters in Karachi and took them to Afghanistan for training. The Police recovered two kilograms of explosives, five grenades and as many packets of ball bearings and wires used in the preparation of suicide vests from their possession. During the period, a total of 7,689 suspects were apprehended, of which 198 were taken into custody after proper investigation, he said. SSP Amjad Ahmed Shaikh further said that religious seminaries throughout the District were also checked, adding, that about 237 of them were registered and 23 were unregistered. A Rangers spokesman said 19 suspects were picked up in intelligence-based operations, including two LeJ men, an AQIS operative, two activists of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, six extortionists, four Iranian diesel smugglers, two unregistered Afghans and two street criminals. Weapons, ammunitions, and smuggled Iranian diesel were seized in the raids. All the arrested men were later handed over to Police for further legal action. In another operation in the Surjani Town area, the Sindh Police’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested three terrorists associated with a proscribed outfit. As per details, CTD teams conducted a raid on a hideout and after an encounter arrested three terrorists identified as Qari Abid, Qari Nazeer and Zubair Ashfaq. Officials said the men were working for a banned outfit and had been involved in murders, extortion and other crimes. Hand grenades and pistols were recovered from them.

Four militants were arrested during the operation but one arrested militant was later killed in exchange fire with personnel of LEAs when he tried to flee from the custody.
