A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper, identified as Mujahid Khan was killed and a Police man, identified as Javid Ahmed was injured as they foiled an attempt by Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) fidayeen (suicide squad) to storm into their 23rd battalion camp at Karan Nagar area of Srinagar early on February 12, reports Daily Excelsior. A CRPF spokesman said that in the wee hours on February 12, fidayeen, carrying bags and armed with AK 47s, were seen approaching towards the CRPF camp. “The sentries immediately opened fire at around 4.30 am as they noticed two suspicious persons carrying backpacks and weapons”, he said. The firing from the CRPF forced the militants to enter into an under-construction building adjacent to the camp. As the Security Forces (SFs) searched the building, the hiding militants opened fire in which one CRPF man was killed and another Police man was injured. Police and CRPF rescued around 20 persons including children and women from the area. They were taken to safer locations before assault was launched against the fidayeen.Army was later called in to take on the two fidayeen, who are said to be of LeT. Sources said that the fidayeen called their handlers telling them that their mission has failed and they are holed up in a building adjacent to the CRPF camp. Huge explosion were heard from the encounter site during the day as Army used grenades and rockets to blast the building. However, militants were firing at the SFs intermittently. The operation was put on hold for the night and cordon around the building was strengthened to prevent militants from fleeing the area.Later, clashes broke out between the youth and SFs outside CRPF camp in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar, in the afternoon, adds Daily Excelsior. Youth in large numbers assembled near the encounter site and pelted stones on the SFs, triggering clashes. SFs retaliated by firing teargas to disperse the protesters.

Jammu and Kashmir Police on April 3 denied a The Times of India report that tourists had been attacked by stone pelters on April 1, but acknowledged that “two tourists got minor injuries on April 1 ... because the vehicles came in the middle of an area where pelting was going on”, reports The Times of India. Awantipora Superintendent of Police (SP) Zahid Ahmad also confirmed that a vehicle in which tourists were travelling was attacked by stone-pelters, but said the incident took place near Khanabal in Anantnag, not in Awantipora Police District. Another tourist bus (no. UP17AT505) of Sehgal Tours, carrying 42 tourists from Mandya district, Karnataka, was attacked by stone-pelters in Kangan on April 3. Driver Ramesh said the bus was on its way from Sonmarg to Srinagar. Two tourists suffered injuries from the shards of the glass windows that were smashed by stone-pelters. Earlier on April 3, The Times of India had reported that stone pelters attacked tourists in Jammu and Kashmir in which four tourists were injured. Responding to the report, the Police issued a statement, saying that no incident of stone pelting took place near Dal Lake and Awantipora areas on Sunday [April 1]. "Police investigations have also shown that no injuries to anybody were reported from the area...two tourists got minor injuries on April 1. They were given first aid and discharged immediately. There has been no intended or designed attack on any tourist. It was because the vehicles came in the middle of an area where pelting was going on,” the Police said. However, sources confirmed to The Times of India that stone-pelters did attack tourists on April 1 evening causing injuries to two women - Sandhya Kumari (25), wife of Manish Kumar, and Mandana Jaswal (35), wife of Ajay Jaswal, both from Uttar Pradesh. They were taken to SMHS hospital for treatment. Sandhya was hit in the abdomen and Mandana was hit on the head. Both were discharged after treatment, according to Dr Muneer Ahmad, deputy superintendent of SMHS hospital. The incident, according to officials, occurred around 8pm at Awantipora on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway when a mob of around 100 pelted stones on the vehicle in which tourists were travelling towards Srinagar. “The vehicle was partially damaged and two persons sustained injuries. The doctors at the hospital discharged the injured tourists after investigation,” officials said. Awantipora SP Zahid Ahmad confirmed the incident but not the location. “It is ok (sic), but it didn’t take place in Awantipora police district. It happened somewhere near Khanabal in Anantnag,” he said.

People in large numbers gathered at the encounter site and pelted stones at the SFs leading to ding dong battles during which four civilians were killed and over 60 injured. The civilians who were killed at Khudwani have been identified as Sharjeel Sheikh (25), Bilal Ahmad Tantray (16), Faisal Illahi (14), Aijaz Ahmad Palla (30), Mohammad Siraj. Four militants, a civilian and a Police man were killed in an encounter in Srigufwara area of Anantnag District on June 22, reports Daily Excelsior. Over three dozen persons were also injured in the clashes that broke out during the operation. When Security Forces (SFs) cordoned off Nowshera in Khiram in Srigufwara area of Anantnag District early on June 22, militants opened fire on the troops during the operation leading to an encounter. Sources said that in the initial firing, one house owner, Mohammad Yousuf Rather (50) was killed and his wife Hafeeza suffered bullet injuries. One Special Police Officer (SPO), Ashiq Hussain was also killed in the encounter and another Army man was critically injured in the initial firing by militants. The firing lasted for several hours and the security forces blasted off the residential house killing all the four militants.A Police spokesman in a statement said that, “In the encounter, all the four militants were killed who have been identified as Dawood Ahmad Sofi, Majid Manzoor Dar, Aadil Rehman Bhat and Mohammad Ashraf Itoo”. Police also said that Dawood Ahmad Sofi (33), son of Mohammad Subhan Sofi, of Zainakoot HMT Srinagar, was involved in a number of stone pelting cases in the area prior to joining the militant outfit. “He was involved in a militant attack which resulted in the death of ASI Ghulam Mohammad and HC Naseer Ahmad at Bagh-Ali-Mardan Khan in Zadibal and also in the killing of the policeman and snatching his rifle at Tengpora Batamaloo besides other militant attacks”, the spokesman said. “Majid Manzoor Dar of Talangam, Pulwama also joined the militant outfit and remained active along with Aadil Rehman Bhat of Shettipora, Bijbehara and Mohammad Ashraf Itoo of Hatigam Srigufwara, Anantnag”, the spokesman added. “Initially, Dawood was known to be affiliated with Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) outfit. The outfit was active on social media and mostly attacked the policemen on duty at different places. The social media profiling and inputs indicate that they were inspired by ISIS [Islamic State] module”, the spokesman said. “Incriminating material and a huge quantity of ammunition were also seized from the site of the encounter”, the spokesman said.Soon after the encounter broke out hundreds of people particularly youth marched towards the encounter site, triggering massive clashes as they pelted rocks on the SFs, adds Daily Excelsior. Police and paramilitary forces fired tear smoke shells, pellets and bullets to quell the protests. At least three dozen persons were injured. One of the injured, Ubaid Ahmad, who has bullet injury in his neck is in critical condition.Clashes also erupted in HMT Zainakote in Srinagar (Srinagar District) and Pulwama (Pulwama District). Police used force to quell the protesters. The Hindu adds that the four militants who were killed in an encounter with SFs in Anantnag on June 22 were inspired only by the ideology of the Islamic State (IS), similar to the case of such persons arrested over the years in Kerala, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh and unlike a Kashmiri terrorist group, a senior Jammu and Kashmir Police officer said. Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir), S.P. Pani said they don’t have the infrastructure and logistical support that most Kashmiri terror groups have. The eight or nine men in the ‘gang’ are all former members of the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM), a Pakistan-backed terrorist group that is part of the United Jihad Council (UJC).Mostly well-educated and belonging to urban settlements, the ‘gang’ members had carried out grenade attacks on check posts and snatched weapons from SFs in the past, the Police said. The TuM is headed by Jamil-ur-Rehman of Lajora in Pulwama District. S.P. Pani, said those killed on June 22 were part of a ‘terrorist gang’ and had been on the Police radar for almost a year. “This terrorist gang is as good as those in Hyderabad or Kerala. It is not a terrorist group as the infrastructure and hierarchy, the kind of logistical support such groups provide to their members are not there,” S. P. Pani said. Another Police official insisted there was no physical infrastructure of the IS in the Valley, and initially, the gang used the logistics provided by the TuM.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat on December 16 said that the Kashmiri youth are being forced into stone pelting either due to fear of terrorism or lured by money and asserted that the youth carrying stones should fall into some category of terrorism even though law doesn’t accept stone as a weapon, reports Daily Excelsior. General Rawat said, “a youth who carries stone in his hands is not really a terrorist but supporting terrorism should come in some category of terrorists. All people who disrupt operations are part of terrorist organizations and we have to deal with those, who have stone in their hands”. Asserting that stone is as good a weapon as rifle, he said the civilians and security force personnel are being killed with stones and, therefore, “we have asked the Army jawans to use weapon against stone pelters but only injure them”. “Some of them are being lured by money. Others were being pressurized that the militants will knock their doors in the night if they don’t pick up the stones. A fear is being generated among the youth (to pick up stones),” he asserted.
