Three more ‘protesters’ were killed on June 29 when the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) allegedly opened fire during clashes with protestors in Anantnag as violence spread to south Kashmir, reports Times of India. Daily Excelsior added that 40 persons including 11 Policemen and a CRPF trooper were injured in the day long clashes across the Valley. With separatists giving fresh calls for strike, life remained crippled across Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, for the fifth consecutive day. Meanwhile, with these three deaths, eight ‘protesters’ have lost their lives in the last five days in incidents of shootings involving Security Forces (SFs) escalating the tense situation in the valley. In all, 11 ‘protesters’ have died in the last three weeks during clashes between ‘protestors’ and SFs, reports Times of India. Police identified the killed as Ishfaq Ahmed Khanday (15), Imtiyaz Ahmad Itoo (17) and Shujatul Islam (19). The victims were part of a mob hurling stones at CRPF personnel in Anchidoora in Anantnag town, Police said. As the news of death of two teenagers spread, more people poured on the roads and set ablaze three vehicles of CRPF at Khannabal-Pahalgam road in the town, official sources said. Daily Excelsior added quoting an unnamed Police spokesman that stone pelting was reported from K. P Chowk, Dangerpora, Lazibal, Mattan Chowk and several other places of Anantnag District. ‘Protesters’ tried to set ablaze a religious place at Janglat Mandi in Anantnag and snatched the service weapons of the deputed Police guards, the spokesman said. Earlier in the day, 16-year-old boy Irshad Ahmad Bhat received a bullet injury in his left leg when Police opened fire on a mob at Mattan Bus Stand in the town, Times of India adds. Besides Bhat, 20 other persons including 10 Policemen were injured in day-long clashes between stone pelting mob and law enforcing agencies in the town.

Information received by the Union Government indicates that there has been inflow of funds from across the border to activists who are involved in clashes and stone pelting against paramilitary forces in Jammu and Kashmir. "There have been intelligence reports since past three months which clearly indicate that funding is being made available from across the border to elements in Jammu and Kashmir for fomenting trouble, including stone pelting," an unnamed senior defence official said on July 1. Some conversation between individuals and agents across the border intercepted by the security agencies related to cash transactions for fomenting trouble in the State.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the stone-pelting incidents and strikes in the Valley are "symptoms of a wider problem", which is that people on both sides of Line of Control (LoC) have been fed on a "diet" that "there is a problem in Jammu and Kashmir that needs to be resolved", reported Daily Excelsior. "Anybody would tell you that stone-pelting, strikes and coverage of some aspects of the State in the media are symptoms of a wider problem. The wider problem is that we have fed the people on both sides on a diet—that there is a problem in Jammu and Kashmir that needs to be resolved," he said.

"Between June 11 and August 2, 36 civilian deaths were reported. An Army Captain and a Pakistani militant affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in a 20-hour-long gun battle in Sopore town of Baramulla District, reported Daily Excelsior. The gunfight erupted in the town on Srinagar-Kupwara highway in the evening of December 7 when a joint search party of Police and Rashtriya Rifles (21st Battalion) laid a siege around a house following specific information about presence of two suspected LeT militants. An Army Captain was injured in the initial encounter. The Captain succumbed to injuries in the morning of December 8. The Captain was identified as Upmanyu Singh, according to Times of India. "The operation was halted for the night to avoid collateral damages and resumed this morning," a Police spokesman said on December 8, adds Daily Excelsior. Official sources said the operation ended at around 3pm after the house, where the militants were believed hiding, caught fire during the exchange of fire and was gutted. Dead body of a militant, later identified as Abdullah Ubaid, a Pakistani national owing allegiance with LeT, was recovered from the debris of the house. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from his possession. However, the other militant, identified as Abeedullah, also a suspected Pakistani, had reportedly managed his escape, apparently last night under the cover of darkness. Earlier in the day, when the Security Forces resumed the operation to flush out the militants, groups of protester took to streets and indulged in stone-pelting on Police and Paramilitary Forces at several places to divert their attention. "Miscreants early morning surfaced in Chan Khan, main town and Bus Stand areas of Sopore, and resorted to stone pelting on Police and security forces deployments," the spokesman said.
