One person was killed and two others were injured on February 9 when Police allegedly opened fire on a group of stone throwing protesters who were protesting against nocturnal raids ahead of anniversary of Parliament attack convict, Afzal Guru at Palhalan in Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. As the situation turned volatile, Police allegedly opened fire resulting in injuries to three persons Farooq Ahmad Bhat, Riyaz Ahmad Bhat and Zahid Ahmad Bhat. The injured were removed to hospital where Farooq Ahmad Bhat (23) alias Prince succumbed to injuries while two others are critical.

Witnesses said that protests erupted after Police stopped a rally that was on way to Nowhatta Chowk against continuous house arrest of All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Police said that some people in the protest rally were carrying Pakistani flags and they have registered a First Information Report (FIR). Earlier in the day on June 12, clashes and protests erupted in parts of Kashmir against the killing Mohammad Altaf Sheikh (45) in Sopore area in Baramulla District on June 9. Hundreds of people took out a protest rally from Jamia Masjid Sopore, were intercepted by the Police. Protesters threw stones at Police leading to clashes which continued for several hours. Police charged batons and fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters. In the interim, in Baramulla town protesters also clashed with Police in the afternoon. Clashes also broke out at Palhallan in the District. Scores of youth pelted stones at Police, forcing them to lob scores of teargas shells at the stone-throwing youth. However, the youth offered stiff resistance and continued stone-pelting for several hours. APHC-G chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called for protests against the killing.

The crackdown was launched following Sopore March call issued by all separatist leaders including Geelani, Mirwaiz, Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik and senior separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah. Curfew like restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar and North Kashmir on June 19 to prevent separatist protest march to Sopore town in Baramulla District against the killings of six men by gunmen over last three weeks, reports Daily Excelsior. Authorities imposed restrictions in Khanyar, Safakadal, Nowhatta, Rainawari, M R Gunj and Kralkhud and Maisuma areas of Srinagar to prevent protests and violence. The restrictions were also imposed in Sopore town, Baramulla and Palhalan areas of North Kashmir. Several separatist leaders were either detained or put under house arrest to prevent them from visiting the Sopore town. All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was under house arrest since last week, curbs were put on movement of moderate APHC Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other separatist leaders like Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Ayaz Akbar, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Khan.

Police said that Owais Ahmad Fuffo (16) had gone missing on July 18. Police later fished out the body of missing Owais. Youth in adjacent Maisuma area came out on streets to protest against the mysterious death of the boy. They were demanding probe into the matter. Police tried to stop the youth from coming on streets, but the youth remained adamant and later pelted stones on Police. The cops tried to chase away the protesters by resorting to baton charge but the youth resisted the police action. Police fired over two dozen tear smoke shells.

Violent protests broke out on September 19, in Tangmarg area in Baramulla District, after bullet ridden body of a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militant was found, reports Kashmir Reader. The body of senior HM militant Fayaz Ahmad of Wailoo village of Pattan was recovered by locals in a paddy field in Deebugh Kunzar (Tangmarg) in Baramulla District. The locals instantly informed the Police, who reached the spot and took the body to the sub-District hospital Tangmarg for post-mortem. Clashes and ‘protests’ broke out at multiple places in Kashmir Valley including in summer capital Srinagar after Friday prayers on November 27 against detentions and militant killings, reports Daily Excelsior. Dozens of masked youths assembled outside Jama Masjid in Nowhatta area of Old City in Srinagar after Friday congregation prayers and resorted to stone-pelting on SFs. During stone-pelting, some youth waved flags of Islamic State (IS) and Pakistan. In Maisuma area of city centre, the activists of All Parties Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani staged a protest against the detention of conglomerate chairman Geelani and other leaders. The separatist activists were seeking “unconditional and immediate” release of Hurriyat leaders. Police detained some of the protesters, including Imtiyaz Haider. Further, a peaceful ‘protest rally’ was taken out in Bijbehara town of Anantnag District after Friday prayers against the death of three local Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants early this week. The town observed shutdown for the fourth day against the killing of the three militants.
