On March 4, life was paralysed in South Tripura’s Amarpur sub-division by a 12-hour bandh called to protest the March 3-National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) attack on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. Meanwhile, security forces intensified the manhunt to nab the terrorists. Security forces detained seven people in connection with this terrorist attack in which 13 people, including 11 CRPF personnel, were killed and two jawans critically injured. NLFT terrorists, who used landmines in the attack, also decamped with some sophisticated weapons from the slain jawans. Senior police and paramilitary officials were supervising the combing operation in the extremist dominated areas. Meanwhile, on the same day, two hardcore NLFT terrorists, after escaping from their hideouts in Sylhet district of Bangladesh, surrendered to the police. The rebels, who crossed the border in the Kamalpur area of Dhalai district, also deposited a light machine gun and a huge cache of ammunition. The two surrendered terrorists informed the police that a serious internal feud is brewing within the NLFT.

Its earlier decision was to extend the cease-fire to all Naga-inhabited areas of the North East, which has since been revoked. The bandh call is restricted to the four hill districts of Manipur—Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong and Chandel. There is a large Naga population in these parts of Manipur where the NSCN-IM wanted its cease-fire with security forces expanded. Security forces are on red alert in these four hill districts. The United Naga Council (UNC) had already given a similar call. According to police sources, normal life has come to a halt in these four hill districts of Manipur as a result of the strike. Also, road communication between Imphal and the rest of the country has been cut off.

Left wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG), blasted a bottling unit of American soft drink company Coca Cola, at Atmakaru in Guntur district, on October 21. According to official sources no one was injured in the incident but the blast caused extensive damage to the unit. The total loss is estimated at Rs one crore. The Naxalites used three steel cans filled with explosives to destroy a boiler and the transformer room of the factory. A fourth can filled with explosives failed to explode. Had this too gone off, the bottling unit of the factory would have been destroyed. The attack came on the eve of the State-wide strike called by the PWG on October 22 to protest US-led military operations in Afghanistan. The Naxalites reportedly left a note behind which said the move was in protest against the ‘imperialistic actions’ of the US in attacking Afghanistan. The Naxalites branded the US as the ‘real terrorist’ and warned that there would be more attacks against multinational companies in the days ahead.
