A Deputy Commandant of the Border Security Force (BSF), a soldier and one police personnel were killed and four persons, including a security officer, sustained injuries when a two-member Fidayeen (suicide squad) attacked the Income Tax (IT) office in the capital Srinagar on January 7. One of the terrorists was shot dead in the resultant exchange of fire while the multi-storeyed building housing the IT office caught fire during the gun-battle. A woman Naxalite of the Gundlakamma local guerilla squad of the CPI (Maoist), identified as Lathakka, was reportedly killed by the police in an encounter at J. Pullalacheruvu village in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh on January 8. It is the first encounter in Prakasam district after the State Government initiated peace talks with the Naxalites. The police also recovered one 303 rifle, one 410 musket, two claymore mines, 12 detonators and eight kitbags from the incident site. Meanwhile, the ‘North-East Area Commander’ of the CPI (Maoist), Sagar, alleged that the police had killed Lathakka in a fake encounter, and held the Giddalur Congress-I legislator, Pagadala Ramaiah, responsible for it.

According to Daily Excelsior, the two terrorists forced their entry into the Revenue Complex while throwing a grenade and firing upon the guards, at 1500 hours. Three police personnel were killed in the initial round of firing and equal number sustained injuries. Both terrorists were shot dead in the subsequent gun-battle. Around 250 people, including the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir Range), were in the building at the time of the attack. This was the second Fidayeen attack of the year in Kashmir valley. A spokesperson of the Al Badr told local news agencies over telephone that cadres of his outfit had carried out the Fidayeen attack. Two armed terrorists are reported to have intruded into the highly-guarded complex in the heart of Srinagar at approximately 3.55 pm (IST). The venue is approximately a few meters away from the Sher-e-Kashmir Stadium where the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, is to flag off the bus on April 7, today. The terrorists, who exploded grenades and entered the building, took position and commenced indiscriminate firing from all directions. The Director-General of Police, Gopal Sharma, later said, "the militants set it [the building] on fire in order to create chaos." The entire building, housing a number of departments including Tourism, Wildlife, Fisheries, State Road Transport Corporation, J&K Tourism Development Corporation, Northern Railways, Post Office, and Indian Airlines, was destroyed in the blaze.

According to information secured by the security forces (SF), four terrorists, including the one who had escaped in an injured condition from Takiya Farooq Shah a day earlier, were hiding at the house of one Ghulam Mohammad Mir. An encounter ensued after one of the terrorists, who subsequently was killed, opened fire on the troops. An unidentified civilian, who had been sent in by Army to check the number and the weapons of the holed up terrorists, also died in the cross-firing, according to Daily Excelsior.
