A Special Task Force (STF) constable was injured during a fierce encounter between the Security Force (SFs) and Communist party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in the Dongerjog Forest area in Gariyaband District of Chhattisgarh on January 2, reports The Times of India. STF chief Vijay Pandey said that the security personnel were conducting a search operation when the rebels opened fire, leading to an encounter at Dongerjog Forest area. A constable Yuvaraj Sagar, who had sustained bullet injuries on his abdomen, airlifted to the State capital, Raipur, for treatment at a super specialty hospital, and his condition was reported to be stable.

Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, including a local top commander from Bandipora District, were killed in separate incidents in Shalimar and Gasu areas of Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 3, reports Greater Kashmir. Based on specific input generated by Police regarding presence of terrorist in Shalimar area, a search operation was launched by Srinagar Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). During the search operation, the search party was fired upon indiscriminately by hiding militants, which was effectively retaliated leading to a brief shootout and elimination of LeT local top commander Saleem Parray. As per Police, Parray was active since 2016 and was involved in several civilian killings including of Bashir Ahmad Dar and his brother Ghulam Hassan Dar at Shahgund Hajin in Bandipora on May 5, 2018, Hilal Ahmad Parray at Parray Mohalla Hajin on May 16, 2018, even as "he was also involved in throat slitting of many civilians in Hajin area.

The encounter broke out in the morning shortly after SFs cordoned the area following the inputs about the presence of militants there. The identity of the slain militants was yet to be ascertained. “Both the killed terrorists are locals and linked with proscribed terror outfit LeT/TRF. One cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed in an encounter took place between the Police and Maoists in the Pachrukhia Hill area under Madanpur Block in Aurangabad District of Bihar on January 5, reports prabhatkhabar.com. Aurangabad Superintendent of Police (SP), Kantesh Kumar Mishra said that on January 5 evening, the Commando Battalion for resolute Action (CoBRA) personnel were conducting a search operation, and during this, on seeing them, the Maoists started firing, to which the soldiers also took the front and started retaliation. However, Police personnel are safe in the incident. Meanwhile, the Maoists also triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast, as has been confirmed by the SP himself. The identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained.

Three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants including a local militant killed in an encounter with the Security Forces (SFs) in Chandgam village of Pulwama District in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 5, reports Greater Kashmir. "Acting on specific input regarding presence of terrorists in village Chandgam area of Pulwama, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 55RR and 182Bn CRPF in the said area, " a Police spokesman said. "During the search operation, as the joint search party proceeded towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter, " he added. Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including 02 M-4 Carbine and 01 AK series rifle were recovered from the site of encounter. Among the killed militants, two have been identified as Mir Owais resident of Ashmander area of Pulwama District and a Pakistani national Talha Yasir. Regarding the third killed militant, although the recoveries made from the site of encounter indicate him to be a foreigner however his identification is being ascertained. As per Police, the slain trio was "part of group involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on security forces and civilian atrocities". "Several terror crime cases were registered against both the killed identified terrorists. Terrorist Owais was involved in killing of a civilian namely Azad Ahmad Dar of Kangan Pulwama. The killed Pakistani terrorist Talha was mastermind in preparation of Vehicle-borne IEDs besides, involved in attack on civilian at Wanpora area of Pulwama”, Police said.

Three Jash-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants including two foreigners were killed and an Army officer was injured in an encounter in Zolwa Chadoora area of Budgam District in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in the morning of January 7, reports Daily Excelsior. Based on a specific input generated by Police regarding presence of militants in Zolwa Chadoora area, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Security Forces (SFs) in the evening of January 6. “During the search operation, as the presence of militants was ascertained they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated, leading to an encounter. The SF evacuated the civilians trapped around the encounter site. “To avoid any collateral damage due to darkness, the operation was suspended during night hours”, an official said. However, in the wee hours, the operation resumed, resulting in the killing of three militants of JeM. An Army officer received minor splinter injury. One of the killed militants has been identified as Waseem Mir son of Ghulam Qadir Mir, resident of Nowgam Srinagar, who was active since December 2020. The official said that documents recovered revealed that the other two killed militants appeared to be foreigners. As per Police records, Waseem was a categorized militant and part of group involved in several cases including attacks on SFs and civilian atrocities. Several cases were registered against him.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘politburo’ member Misir Besra and his squad members managed to escape following an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand early on January 10 (today), reports The Tribune. Acting on a tip-off, Jharkhand Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a search operation during which Maoists opened fire on them, to which SFs retaliated, leading to a fierce gun-battle in a forest between Tumbahaka and Sarjamburu under Tonto Police Station area on January 9, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Linda said. However, Besra and his squad made a hasty retreat into the thick forests, and no casualty had been reported on either side, SP, Linda said, adding that a combing operation is under way.

Two Al-Badr militants were killed in an encounter at Hasanpora village in Kulgam District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 10, reports Daily Excelsior. A gunfight broke out between militants and Security Forces (SFs) in Hasanpora in the afternoon of January 9. In the ensuing encounter, two Al-Badr militants were killed and their bodies retrieved from the site. They have been identified as Imad Muzaffar Wani, resident of Arigam of Pulwama and Abdur Rashid Tokher, resident of Hasanpora. Police said that they were part of groups involved in several militancy cases including attacks on SFs and civilians. Besides, Imad Wani was involved in attack on Police personnel Mushtaq Ahmad Wagay of Pulwama on December 19, 2021, in which the said Police personnel got seriously injured. Sources said an exchange of fire took place between the SF personnel and the ultras inside the forest last night (January 12), however, the Maoists later managed to fled the spot. Nuapada Police said, “Acting on Intelligence input regarding camping of a large number of CPI Maoists in dense forest area near Odisha-Chhattisgarh border to carry out various anti-security forces strategies and other subversive activities, an anti-Naxal operation was launched by combined security forces of SOG [Special Operations Group], DVF [District Voluntary Force] and CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] on January 7.” At around 8.45 am on January 9, when the commandos of SOG and DVF were conducting search operation in the forest area of Sunabeda Reserve Forest, around 50 to 60 armed Maoists opened indiscriminate fire at the security forces. The team retaliated in self-defense. Again on January 10, a combined team of SOG, DVF and CRPF was sent to that area for reinforcement, informed the cops. The encounter took place in a forest near Burgum village under Aranpur police station limits when a team of the District Reserve Guard was out on an anti-Naxal operation, and after the face-off ended, the body of a Maoist was recovered, Superintendent of Police (SP), Siddharth Tiwari said, adding that the deceased, identified as Arjun alias Lakhma Sodi (34), was carrying a reward of INR 500,000 on his head. Among the arrested persons are ‘zonal commander’ Balram Oraon, an accused in 82 cases, ‘sub-zonal commander’ Dashrath Singh Kherwar, ‘area commander’ Markush Nagesia and members Shaileshwar Oraon, Mukesh Korba, Viren Korba, Shailendra Nagesia, Sanjay Nagesia, and Sheela Kherwar. Kherwar and Nagesia are wanted in seven and 10 extremists related cases respectively, while others are accused persons in two cases each. Based on a specific input of Police about the presence of militants in village Amshipora, Shopian, a joint operation was launched in the intervening night of February 24 and 25, and after a cluster of houses were taken into cordon, following the drill civilians were evacuated to safety. Thereafter, house to house searches were started in the wee hours to locate the hiding militants. During the searches, the militants came out and resorted to indiscriminate firing, in which one civilian namely Shakeel Ahmed Khan son of Abdul Rahim Khan resident of Amshipora got seriously injured and later succumbed to the injuries. However, the fire by the militants was retaliated effectively in which both militants were killed, who have been identified as Muzamil Ahmad Mir, resident of Chatripora, Shopian, and Shariq Ayoob, resident of Bonpora, Amshipora, Shopian. They were involved in the recent attack on the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Maisuma area of Srinagar. Speaking to reporters, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar described the killings as a major success for the SFs in Srinagar. He said that Police while acting on a lead sealed the suspected house in Bishembar Nagar area of Srinagar early this morning. “After closing in on the house where two militants were hiding, they lobbed a grenade and fired at the security forces in which two policemen and a CRPF personnel were injured,” the IGP said. He said that in the ensuing encounter, two hardcore LeT militants were killed. Both the killed militants were Pakistani and identified as Mohammad Bhai alias Abu Qasim, alias Mir Shoaib alias Mudassir and Abu Arsalan alias Khalid alias Aadil. As per police records, both of them were ‘A’ categorized and linked with LeT. Mohammad Bhai was active since 2019 while as Abu Arsalan was active since year 2021 in Central Kashmir. They were involved in pistol-borne attacks and grenade throwing incidents at various places. They were also involved in an attack on CRPF personnel in Maisuma in which one CRPF was killed and another injured.

Four terrorists, including a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) ‘commander’, were neutralised so far in the ongoing encounter that broke out in Malwah area of Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on April 21, reports Daily Excelsior. Earlier on April 21 morning it was reported that LeT ‘Commander’ Yousuf Kantroo was killed while others militants were under trap. Yousuf Kantroo was on the list of top 10 most wanted terrorists. Acting on a specific input, a special team of Budgam Police along with the Army launched a joint cordon and search operation in Malwah area. During the search operation as the joint search party reached the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately upon them in which four soldiers including one officer received minor injuries. The fire was effectively retaliated leading to an encounter. Later on, Baramulla Police headed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla District also joined in the operation. One Policeman from the Baramulla District also got injured in the encounter. According to J&K Police, terrorist Yousuf Kantroo earlier joined as an over ground worker of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) outfit and was arrested in the year 2005. Later on, he was released in the year 2008 but he again joined terrorist rank in the year 2017 and started killing innocent civilians, Policemen and political workers. Later on he switched from HM to LeT. However, the identification of the other killed terrorist is yet to be ascertain.

Following the inputs about militants’ presence in Drabgam village, house to house searches was launched, and during the search operation, exchange of fire ensured as militants started firing at Security Forces (SF). Initially one militant identified as Junaid Sheergojri was killed, while other two militants Fazil Nazir Bhat and Irfan Ah Malik was later on neutralized. One of the militants, Junaid Sheergojri, was involved in killing of a Policeman Reyaz Ahmad on May 13. Acting on information about presence of a few Maoist cadres on the hills of Kharadi village, about 70 kilometres from District Headquarters Balaghat, a team of 50 personnel of Hawk Force, (special anti-Naxal Force of MP Police) launched the combing operation, in which the Maoists were killed. The slain Maoist trio collectively carried a reward of over INR 5.7 million on their heads. Nagesh, who carried a bounty of INR 2.9 million on him, was the ‘commander’ of Tanda area committee of Mafalling under Gondia-Rajnandgaon-Balaghat (GRB) area of Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh (MMC) corridor. Manoj and Rama, both members of the area committee, carried a bounty of INR 1.4 million each on them. The encounter comes months after Maharashtra Police killed 26 Maoist cadres in MMC zone, where Police say Maoists are trying to expand their base. According to official sources, the slain militant identified as Gyan Asom was part of the six cadres team led by commander, Rupom Asom who allegedly had taken shelter at Dapather Majgaon under Kakopathar Police Station (PS). Based on this information, when Security Forces (SF) approached the house, militants started firing and hurled two grenades. In retaliation, two militants were injured. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of Maoists, the District Voluntary Force (DVF), Special Operation Group (SOG), and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) raided the area, however, over 60 Maoists including some female cadres managed to flee the camp at Patadhara RF. Among the Maoists present there were Murli alias Sangram Reddy, Debji, Jayaram alias Chhalpati and Kartik alias Dashru, a Police officer said. Troops observed movement along the LoC at Sher Makri in Nowshera sector this morning and became alert. They opened firing after intruder refused to surrender. He was hit by 3-4 shots in his legs and was captured in injured condition. During investigations, identity of injured intruder was established as Tabarak Hussain (26), son of Mistri Malik, a resident of village Sabzkot in Kotli District of Pakistan occupied Jammu Kashmir (PoJK). Sources recalled that on April 25, 2016, Tabarak Hussain and his 15-year-old brother Haroon Ali were captured by Jhangar battalion in Nowshera sector when they were trying to infiltrate into the Indian Territory in a group of three. The third infiltrator had managed to escape back. Interrogation of Tabarak and Haroon had revealed that Tabarak was cultivated by Pakistan army and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and had worked for their Intelligence Unit for two years during which he was trained to acquire enemy information and establishing cover story in case he is apprehended. He had also undergone six weeks training as a guide at Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) training camp at LoC at Bhimber in PoJK. Tabarak and Haroon along with their associates were launched from Kaldio, Sabzkot in PoJK. They were carrying Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) with them for planting on forward posts of the Indian Army. However, after their arrest, both underwent 26 months sentence. After completion of jail term, they were repatriated to Pakistan via Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar. Tabarak’s younger brother Mohammad Sayeed was also apprehended by the Indian Army in Sher Makri area of Nowshera sector on December 16, 2019 where Tabarak was nabbed today in injured condition.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were shot dead after in an encounter with the Security Force (SF) personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG), Hawk Force, in the forests area of Motinala in the Supkhar area in Balaghat District of Madhya Pradesh on November 30, reports The Free Press Journal. Another Maoist was also shot at and injured but she was able to run away. The Maoists, who were shot dead, were identified as Ganesh Marawi (27) and Rajesh aka Banjam (19), both of them were ‘commanders’ of Bhoramdev Area Committee (Platoon) PL 2. An AK 47 rifle and a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) were seized from their possession. According to official sources, Banjam was a resident of Sukma in Bastar under Pal Gundam Police Station, and a reward of INR 300,000 on his head was declared in Madhya Pradesh, INR 1.2 million in Maharashtra, and INR 500,000 in Chhattisgarh. The other Maoist, Ganesh, a resident of Sakin in the Narguda area of Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra, was the ‘commander’ of zone coordination committee, and carried a reward of INR 300,000 on his head in Madhya Pradesh, INR 400,000 in Maharashtra and INR 500,000 in Chhattisgarh. As the Maoists were planning to celebrate ‘People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) week’ from December 2 to 8, their activities have intensified in the area. The gunfight continued throughout the night and the bodies of two Maoists were found in the morning. On getting information about it, a team of Hawk Force began to rifle through the forests of the Supkhar area at night. On December 1, five commandos of Central Reserve Police Forces’ (CRPF) Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit were injured in gunfights with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in a forest in the Tonto area of West Singhbhum District in Jharkhand, reports Times Now. The gunfight broke out after the extremists opened fire on approaching Security Force (SF) personnel, who were undertaking a search operation in the jungle. However, the Maoists managed to escape through the dense forest. Sanjay Anandrao Lathkar, Additional Director General (Operation) said, “There have been two clashes with Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists] in Chaibasa since morning [December 1], in which five CoBRA soldiers were injured.” As per reports, joint teams of CRPF and Jharkhand Police have been conducting a massive search operation in the area for the last two weeks to arrest Maoist leader Misir Besra, who carries a bounty of IN 10 million on his head. A large number of Improvised Explosive Devices, along with arms and ammunition were also seized during the operation.

Two women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed in an exchange of fire between Security Forces (SFs) and the extremists on border of Kandhamal-Boudh Districts in Matakupa Reserve Forest area under Gochhapada Police limits in Kandhamal District of Odisha on December 6, reports The New Indian Express. Basing on intelligence inputs, Kandhamal, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet Agarwal led a coordinated combing operation in the area when all of a sudden, the Maoists opened fire at the SFs. In retaliation the Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel too fired and gunned down two Maoists, Inspector General (IG) Satyabrata Bhoi said, adding, the others however escaped taking advantage of the dense forests. Bodies of two female cadres of the banned CPI-Maoist in uniform were recovered from the site. Besides, four fire arms including an INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle with 11 rounds of ammunition and one Improvised Explosive Device (IED) have been recovered from the area. However, the identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained, the IG said, adding, combing operation has been intensified. More teams have been pressed into the area.

However, no injury or casualty was reported in the incident, officials said, adding that the incident was reported in Orchha Police Station limits about 65 kilometers away from district headquarters when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) were out for area domination towards Gudari village when the IED blast occurred. Soon after the explosion, Maoists, who were hiding in the area started firing at the team. In response to the same, the SFs responded to the firing, forcing Maoists to flee. The DRG and CAF teams carried out searches and recovered material used for IED explosion including wires and pieces of the pressure cooker used in the blast in the area.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar Range, Sundarraj P said, the gunfight took place at around 10 am in a forest between Perowada and Timenar villages under Mirtur Police Station limits when a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF) was out on an anti-Maoist operation. The operation was launched based on the inputs about the presence of members of the Bhairamgarh area committee of Maoists in Mirtur area, located more than 400 kilometres from the State capital Raipur. On December 20, Security Forces (SFs) arrested four United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) terrorists in Khatangpani area under Pengeri Police Station in Tinsukia District for allegedly providing food and shelter to the cadres of ULFA-I, reports Northeast Today. The arrestees were identified as Amit Mukhiya, Soma Mundri, Raju Gudiya and Lakhan Dang. On December 21, SFs took one of them, Amit Mukhiya, inside Upper Dehing Reserve Forest to show the SFs the exact location, where a group of ULFA-I militants had taken shelter. As they reached the spot, the militants started firing. On retaliation, the SFs returned the fire. Amit Mukhiya was injured in the encounter. However, the militants managed to escape. Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including a woman, were killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in a forest area near Tekameta village under Farsegarh Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on December 23, reports The Indian Express. The Police said the encounter took place during an anti-Maoist operation undertaken jointly by SFs of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. Bilaspur, Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjneya Varshney said, “The location of the encounter is said to be around 10 km from Maharashtra border. One woman and one man were killed. Another Maoist, who was injured in the encounter, was captured alive and we are questioning him. We have recovered three weapons – two SLRs [Self Loading Rifles] and another firearm. No one from our team suffered injury.” While the male Maoist killed in the operation is yet to be identified, the woman Maoist was later identified as Kanthi Lingavva alias Anitha (41), from Laxmi Sagar village in Kaddampeddur Mandal (administrative sub division) in Nirmal District of Telangana. She had a bounty of INR 1.6 million on her arrest from Maharashtra and another bounty of INR 500,000 from Telangana. She worked as a ‘Divisional Committee Member (DCM)’ and ‘Assistant Commander’ of Kumram Bheem Divisional Committee (KBDC). She had joined the party after being attracted to ideologies of the outfit 15 years ago. According to the Police, she is the wife of Mylarapu Adellu alias Bhashkar, a member of the Telangana State Committee and ‘secretary’ of KBDC of the Maoists. Mylarapu, who has a bounty of more than INR 2 million for his arrest, was at the spot and managed to escape, the Police said. The injured Maoist, identified as Lachhmayya Kuchha Weladi (28), from Tekameta in Bijapur, was arrested and taken into custody.
