According to media reports, six Naxalites blasted a cinema belonging to Rangapulla Reddy, relative of former Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Erasu Prathap Reddy, in Atmakur, Kurnool district, alleging the owner was earning money unethically. The theatre and its projector room were totally damaged. Separately, in the same district, approximately, 30 armed Naxalites went to the house of market committee former president Thirupamaiah and threatened his family demanding he resign from the TDP. A senior activist of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was beaten to death by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) at Kambalapalli of Chandampet mandal (administrative unit), Nalgonda district on February 9. The Naxalites also reportedly assaulted three persons of the same village. According to police sources, approximately 30 armed Naxalites, including eight women, reached the village and took away the victim into the forest area. He was beaten to death on the suspicion that he was acting as police informer. Later, the Naxalites went round the village and threatened that those who act as police informers would meet with the same fate.

In another incident, Naxalites of the Communist Party of India––Marxist-Leninist [CPI-ML] (Pratighatana) group beat a tendu leaf contractor to death in Gangaram village of Kataram mandal, Karimnagar district, on March 11. Media reports said three armed Naxalites went to the house of the contractor, Bandam Adi Reddy, and took him into the forest where three others joined them and thrashed him severely demanding a ransom of Rs 4 lakhs as party fund. They asked him to pay the amount by March 30 and warned of serious consequences if he failed to do so. After his return from the forest, Adi Reddy complained of stomachache in the house and began vomiting and later succumbed to internal injuries.

According to media reports, there is a panic due to the killing of Tadwai mandal (administrative unit) TDP president, Baddham Narsa Reddy, and Linapet BJP leader Sivakumar by Naxalites of the PWG, on March 15 and April 27 respectively. Jogi and Industires Minister Mohinder Karma are scheduled to attend a mass marriage ceremony in this Naxalite-affected district on May 8. Approximately 200 tribal marriages are likely to be performed at Gangaloor village in Bijapur area for the first time. On May 5, the PWG put up posters and distributed handbills in the Bijapur and Basadura area, opposing the visit. The posters also appealed to the local people to boycott the visit. All Panchayat (local bodies) representatives have reportedly been warned against participation in the ceremony. "Those attending the function will be punished appropriately," the posters caution.

Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) made an unsuccessful attempt to loot the Chaitanya Grameena Bank in Tallacheruvu village, Guntur district, on June 9. According to media reports, approximately 25 persons claiming to be PWG Naxalites of the Krishnapatti dalam (squad) armed with lethal weapons entered the bank. The cashier reportedly fled the place with keys on noticing the armed Naxals. The Naxalites made a vain attempt to break the cash box. Later, they went to a liquor shop destroyed the liquor bottles, furniture and a fridge. They also threatened the owner of the bar and ordered him to stop the business.

According to media reports, left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) have threatened the District and Sessions judge of Gaya, Jawahar Choudhary, and his family for handing out death sentences and imprisonment in 2001 to Naxalites accused in the February 1992-Bara massacre, in which 35 persons were killed. Choudhary has reportedly sought protection for himself and his family members. The judge said that the MCC had sent him threatening letters and also made phone calls warning him of retaliation. A kangaroo court of the MCC recently sentenced the judge to death for his ‘wrong decision’.

On June 8, 2001, Justice Choudhary had sentenced four MCC Naxalites to death in the Barra massacre case, in which 35 people were killed. Justice Chand had awarded the death penalty to three MCC Naxalites on June 17, 2003, in the Beltu massacre case where 15 people were killed. Similarly, Justice Tiwari ordered the death sentence for four other Naxalites, in connection with the Meral massacre. An emergency meeting of the Central Committee members of the MCC was held in Chatra on June 27. The meeting decided to launch intensive campaign against the recent spate of sentence pronounced against the MCC cadres.

The warning letters to the Minister comes in the wake of mass resignations by the ruling party leaders from Achampet and Kollapur during the past two months following PWG threats. A similar warning has reportedly been issued to the Mahboobnagar district TDP president, T Manohar, who shifted his family to Hyderabad and restricted his movements in the Naxalite-affected areas.

According to media reports, the Naxalites came to the village in the night and forced three civilians to accompany them after calling them out of their respective houses. After they reached the village outskirts, the Naxalites severely assaulted them alleging that they were assisting the police in an anti-Naxal drive in the area. Later they killed one of them for alleged contacts with the police. The Naxalites left the other two warning that they would meet the same fate if they would continue to assist the police.

According to media reports, the State Home Department has alerted the district police chiefs of Hazaribagh, Chatra and Ranchi districts about threat issued by left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) to abduct Additional District and Sessions Judge, Hazaribagh, Ashok Kumar Chand. The judge had, on June 16, awarded capital punishment to three MCC Naxalites besides sentencing 23 others to life imprisonment for their involvement in the Beltu massacre in 2001 in which 14 persons were killed by the Naxalites of the MCC. The MCC is reportedly planning to abduct the judge or his family members to drive a hard bargain with the government in lieu of the release of its cadres.
