PTI reports that seven persons were arrested for having alleged links with the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and planning to abduct a Government official in Keonjhar District, Police said on January 1."They were picked up by jawans [personnel] of the anti-Maoist Special Operation Group (SOG) and Police from Padang village in Telkoi Police Station area yesterday," Superintendent of Police Asit Panigrahi told reporters. The accused were planning to abduct the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Telkoi on November 18 after the arrest of two Maoist cadres from the area, he said, adding the BDO cancelled visit to his village after getting tip-off about the plot to kidnap him. Several Maoist literature and handwritten letters were seized from the arrested persons, hailing from Gudinarda village in Telkoi area.

The Orissa Police claimed to have arrested Saswati Das, wife of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘State Committee Secretary’ Sabyasachi Panda on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar on January 14, reported The Hindu. Saswati Das alias Mili Panda, who was staying with her girl, was said to be heading media and publicity wing of the CPI-Maoist in the State. Police also seized huge quantity of publicity materials, many incriminating documents, a laptop computer and cash of INR four lakh from her possession. “Acting on a tip-off, we intercepted a jeep carrying four sacks of CPI (Maoist) publicity literature. We took the driver into our custody and accompanied the vehicle to its destination,” said Inspector General of Police (Operation) Sanjeev Marik. He said Saswati Das was a very active member of outfit. “She has been involved in fund mobilisation, creation of support base through alleged frontal organisations posing to be human rights groups and staying in touch with rights activists.” Saswati, aged around 40, was also suspected to have conducted a reconnaissance of different Police establishments before hundreds of CPI-Maoists launched daring attack on Nayagarh District headquarters town displaying mobile warfare tactics in 2008. The Police official said, “She will be produced before court soon.” Saswati’s nine-year-old daughter has been handed over to her maternal grandfather, Police sources said. Sabyasachi Panda is said to be the most wanted Maoist leader in the State. Intelligence sources said Panda had masterminded attack on Nayagarh District headquarters, killing Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Swami Laxmanananda and on Police establishments.

Following the January 15 arrest of Saswati Das alias Mili Panda, wife of Sabyasachi Panda, state ‘secretary’ of the CPI-Maoist, the extremists on January 17 resorted to literature campaign to defuse panic among the armed cadres, reported Odishadiary.com. Police sources confirmed that the insurgents are distributing books, literatures to clarify their unity. “We are in a united house, there was no difference of opinion and our fight would continue against the rich and ruling class,” the literatures said, which were distributed in Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati and Koraput Districts of the State. The Maoists are also holding street plays, meetings and singing revolutionary songs to divert attention from the arrest of senior women wing leader. While most of the posters and leaflets displayed and distributed by Maoists asked traders, contractors and oppressors to stop their alleged anti-tribal activities. In some posters, left wing extremists invited people to join their mission or to extend support to them.

According to Gangadhar Pujari, the watchman of the tower, about 20 Maoists, including three women members, were involved in it. A Maoist cadre, identified as Laba Kimbaka, was arrested by Security Forces near Dangasorada under Chandrapur block in Rayagada District. It is suspected that he along with some other Maoists of the area was planning to attack a camp of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel at Dangasorada, said the Rayagada Superintendent of Police Anup Krishna. Police seized two landmines, two locally made grenades, three detonators, Maoist literature and other incriminating literature from the arrested Maoist. He was part of the Dhepaguda Dalam (squad) of the Bansadhara Division of the CPI-Maoist.

Suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres shot dead a tribal leader in Keonjhar District, Police said on June 16, reports PTI. Biswanth Chatar, a former Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) District president, was shot dead in the night of June 15 by suspected Maoists. Biswanth was attacked when he was returning home with a friend. While he died on the spot, his friend sustained bullet wounds, the police said. "Biswanath was killed for allegedly being a Police informer," an unnamed senior District Police officer said. The police recovered a few Maoist posters from near the dead body.

Cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) killed a school teacher identified as Ghasi Kendruka (35) in Narayan Patna block of Koraput District on August 15. He was opposing the Maoists and the violent activities of Narayan Patna based Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS). According to Police sources, over 30 Maoists reached Kendruka's house at Gotiguda village under Narayan Patna Police Station limits in the midnight of August 15 and dragged him out of the house to the nearby mango orchard where his throat was slit. During the killing the Maoists shouted anti-Government slogans and branded Kendruka a Police informer. They also left leaflets at the spot claiming responsibility for the killing.

Separately, a group of around 40 armed Maoists blew up a Residential High School building managed by the Tribal Welfare department at Gompakunda under Kalimela Police Station limits in Malkangiri District. They asked around 60 students present in the hostel to stand back and not interfere in their violent act. Through posters left at the spot the Maoists claimed that it was their mark of protest against the visit of US president Barack Obama to India. It may be noted that Maoists had given call for nationwide bandh (general shut down) on November 8 to protest against US president's visit. The Maoists also claimed that they had blasted the school building as it was to be used as camping site for security forces during anti-naxal operations.

The Hindu reports that Padma alias Sirisa alias Nirmala (40), wife of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) Central Committee member Ramakrishna alias RK, was arrested along with two other woman cadres, identified as Esori Anduluru (18) and Runi Maningi alias Sarita (20) from Dudhari in Semiliguda block of Koraput District on November 13, while they were on their way to Narayanpatna in a jeep. Interrogation revealed that Esori, a native of Visakhapatnam District has been working as a militia member of the Maoists for the past few years. Recently, she had been selected for promotion. Padma was on her way to Narayanpatna to meet her husband and was escorting Esori to be trained under her husband. Runi, a resident of Bandhugaon area in Koraput District had links with Maoists and was involved in their activities in the area. The jeep driver, Gokul Kuldeep, was also arrested. Maps of different townships, including that of Nayagarh and Jehanabad, Maoist literature, and a large number of letters in Telugu were seized from them.
