A senior Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leader from Chhattisgarh, Pijush Kanti Acharjee (64), was arrested while undergoing treatment for a snake-bite at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital in Assam on January 12, reports Times of India. "He was admitted there on December 28. We had received inputs about him from Army intelligence officials. We searched the hospital and traced him on January 3," sources added. Acharjee was bitten by a snake in the jungles of Dantewada in Chhattisgarh. Born in Shillong (Meghalaya), Acharjee, shifted to Dantewada to join the Maoists. After the snake-bite, he first went to a relative's house in Siliguri (West Bengal) for treatment. Later, he was brought to Guwahati.

Three militants belonging to Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Asom (MULTA), identified as Sabu Ali, Hashmat Ali and Hashimuddin Ali, were arrested by the Security Forces in the Malipara areas of Kamrup District, reports Sentinel. Two suspected National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Unification (NSCN-U) militants were arrested along with a Nagaland Police Constable by a team of Police and Army personnel on February 6 allegedly for arms smuggling. The trio Zhavito Yaputhomi (29), Tokihe Sema (30) and Constable G Avishe Sema (25) were arrested from near Lahorijan on NH-39 during a joint operation. Based on specific information, the Security Forces recovered two 7.65-mm US-made pistol, four 7.65-mm US-made pistol magazine and INR 51,027 from the arrested persons.

Police sources said that a team of Assam Police and Intelligence Bureau visited Rourkela in Orissa and found some vital clues linking their activities with the United Liberation Front of Assom (ULFA). Rourkela Police had arrested Aditya Borah and two of his aides – Trithraj Orang and Asik Sabar alias Ajaya – besides seizing arms, explosives and Maoist literatures. Based on intelligence inputs, SFs launched an operation and first apprehended a ‘commander’ of KCP (N), Joychandra alias Ingsosa alias Dilip. Based on Joychandra’s revelations, SFs raided a house near Bihutoli at Rajgarh Road and arrested Langamba alias Lenin (30) and his associate Yumnam Udai Singh (34). Three computer sets, four mobile phones with nine SIM cards, two pen drives, a driving licence and cash worth INR 45,000 were recovered from their possession. “Preliminary investigation suggests that the group members are not only using Guwahati for shelter but are also trying to invest money in business activities here. We are trying to study the documents stored in the computers seized from them, find out the quantum of money and what sectors or business activities they were investing in,” a Police source said. The police here had earlier arrested leaders and cadres of Manipur-based outfits like the UNLF, KCP, PLA and PREPAK from Guwahati.

The Telegraph reports that Security Forces (SFs) arrested one cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) on October 14 from Sadiya in Tinsukia District along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. With this, at least 18 Maoist rebels were arrested in Tinsukia District alone in the past month which has triggered speculation among SFs that the Leftist rebel group is trying to fill the void created by United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in Upper Assam. “What is worrying is that most of these arrested persons are ethnic Assamese youths. A few of them have received training in Jharkhand and Manipur,” a senior Police officer said. The officer said at least five youths who were arrested had received training in Jharkhand and two were trained by the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) in Manipur.

Superintendent of Police (Karbi Anglong) Anurag Agarwala said, "We have rescued one youth from two KNPF militants at Diphu early this morning. The youth was identified as James Sangma of Beltola in Guwahati. He was kidnapped on Sunday [October 16]."
