Two United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants were arrested from Jalandhar in Punjab on August 13 following a joint operation by the Western Command military intelligence and Punjab Police, reports Telegraph. The duo was identified as Hemanta Roy and Jagdish Das. Roy, who hails from Shingrapara village in Assam’s Baksa district, is a member of the outfit’s ‘709 battalion’ and a relative of Hira Sarania, commander of the unit. Das was reportedly living in Jalandhar for the past four months and was arrested from the Domariapull area. Roy had joined Das three months ago and was working as a waiter in the hotel from where he was arrested. Senior Superintendent of Police Arpit Shukla said that five driving licences, two PAN cards, a camera, defence maps and some sensitive documents were recovered from the militants. An unidentified Army official involved in the operation said, "This is perhaps the first time that we have had specific information on ULFA militants in Punjab. The cell could have been tasked with procuring guns from across the border or via Jammu and Kashmir or could have had nefarious designs to destabilise the region with the help of Pakistan’s ISI."

Sources said that the couple had arrived in Assam from Myanmar a few weeks ago to replace Sujit Mohan as the commander of the ULFA’s 28th battalion. Somdev has joined the ULFA in 1988 and was mostly based in Myanmar. During interrogations he told that the group had released him for family reasons.
