According to Daily Star, Sohel, a top leader of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist-Red Flag faction) was killed in an encounter between police and other cadres of the outfit on January 7 on Tangail-Baghil Road at Laojan in the Sadar sub-district of Tangail district. Police sources said that the encounter occurred when the slain militant was preparing for a criminal operation. Five police constables were injured during the encounter. A rifle with three bullets, one large dagger, and some used shells were recovered from the incident site.

Matiar Rahman of the BCP, arrested on November 13, was killed at Kushilbasha under Kumarkhali sub-district in the Kushtia district when he was leading police personnel to recover hidden firearms. Six bullets were recovered from the encounter site.
