On March 4, life was paralysed in South Tripura’s Amarpur sub-division by a 12-hour bandh called to protest the March 3-National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) attack on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. Meanwhile, security forces intensified the manhunt to nab the terrorists. Security forces detained seven people in connection with this terrorist attack in which 13 people, including 11 CRPF personnel, were killed and two jawans critically injured. NLFT terrorists, who used landmines in the attack, also decamped with some sophisticated weapons from the slain jawans. Senior police and paramilitary officials were supervising the combing operation in the extremist dominated areas. Meanwhile, on the same day, two hardcore NLFT terrorists, after escaping from their hideouts in Sylhet district of Bangladesh, surrendered to the police. The rebels, who crossed the border in the Kamalpur area of Dhalai district, also deposited a light machine gun and a huge cache of ammunition. The two surrendered terrorists informed the police that a serious internal feud is brewing within the NLFT.

The Chief Minister expressed happiness at the peace-overture of the Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) and was hopeful of a positive development. He said the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan was working hand in glove with terrorist groups belonging to India’s Northeast region and based in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) to widen trouble in Tripura and in the entire frontier region. The Chief Minister admitted that Indian terrorist groups were operating from CHT in Bangladesh and, according to intelligence inputs, at least 31 camps of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), the National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and Manipur-based outfits were located there. According to him, the Union Home Ministry too has been provided with details about the location of these camps.

Gorkha Liberation Organisation (GLO) chief Chattre Subba, presently in police custody, talking to newsmen on March 28, called for an all out struggle to achieve 'Gorkhaland', a separate State for Gorkhas. Subba, prime suspect behind the February 10-attack on the Gorkha National Liberation Front Chairman Subash Ghising, was arrested from Pashupati near the Indo-Nepal border on March 24. Contradicting police claims of having arrested him from a GLO hideout near the Indo-Nepal border in Sukhiapokhari, on March 24, Subba, said he had surrendered himself to the Nepal police who assured him of protection but had later handed him over to Darjeeling police. Owning responsibility for conducting an armed training camp at Tinkataria jungles in Kalimpong sub-division in November 2000, Subba admitted to have fled India and taken shelter in Nepal immediately after the encounter between police and terrorists at Tinkataria.
