Farad Sheikh and Shaheen Tanki, have claimed that they were living layman’s lives after taking up these jobs. It is not yet clear which company or hospital they are working for, or the nature of the work assigned to them. According to a source, Sheikh and Tanki have conveyed this to their parents and family members, whom they used to call up from Syria once or twice a week. “They had said that they were fine and are doing their jobs nicely. Former Federal Minister of Interior Rehman Malik on January 11 said that Islamic State (IS) is conspiring to spark violence between Shia and Sunni communities and emphasised that the Government and the law enforcement agencies would have to take coordinated and serious steps to foil this conspiracy, reports Daily Times. Rehman Malik said that military courts are necessary to punish the terrorists and these courts could not be termed as extra-constitutional. He said Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘Chief’ Mullah Fazlullah was indulging in terrorism in Pakistan from Afghanistan, and time has come that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has him arrested and hand him over to Pakistan so that he is punished for his crimes.

In a disturbing development for Islamabad, a former commander of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Hafiz Saeed Khan, has replaced an Afghan national, Abdul Rahim Muslim Dost, as the Ameer (chief) of the Khorasan chapter (which includes Pakistan) of Daish or the Islamic State (IS), led by Abu Bakar Al Baghdadi, The News reported on January 13. The previous Daish Ameer for the Khorasan chapter, Abdul Rahim Muslim Dost, was a former Guantanamo prisoner, who had earlier spent several years in a Pakistani prison after being freed by the Americans. He had been appointed for an interim period to organise the Khorasan chapter of the IS which includes Pakistani, India, Afghanistan, Iran and some Central Asian territories. Rahim was operating from the Zamindawar District of Afghanistan which is situated on the right bank of the Helmand River to the northwest of Kandahar. However, Maulvi Saeed Khan, the new Ameer of the Khorasan chapter of Daish, comes from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan and belongs to the Mamozai area of Orakzai Agency. Before discarding the TTP umbrella in mid-October 2014, Saeed was the Ameer of the Orakzai Agency chapter of the TTP.

One of the three Kalyan (Mumbai, Maharashtra) youths fighting with Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria is learnt to have died in a battle recently, reports The Times of India on January 15. According to the report Shaheen Tanki, a close friend of arrested ISIS operative Arib Majeed, is learnt to have died fighting in Iraq. However, Intelligence agencies are now verifying the information. Sources said, early this week, one of the persons in the Kalyan boys friends circle in the Mumbai suburb received a message from an unknown number in Iraq that Tanki had died. The suspicion was further strengthened as he hadn't spoken to his family for over one-and-a-half months. A security establishment officer said that "Generally these boys call their family randomly once a month. However, Tanki hasn't called for almost two months. Now this message has arrived that he is dead. We are trying to verify the information." Sources added that such verification is not easy as the boys are in a territory where India or even the legitimate Government in Iraq has no access. Sources also said agencies would consider him dead only if there is more clarity.

The Hyderabad Police on January 16 arrested a 32-year-old United States (US)-returned engineering graduate, identified as Salman Moinuddin at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Hyderabad) while he was allegedly on his way to Syria to join Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) along with his girlfriend, who is based in Dubai, reports The Times of India. Police said that Salman Moinuddin, the would-be militant, is also an active recruiter for ISIS. Sleuths of the Counter-Intelligence wing of the Telangana State Intelligence, who effected the arrest, said they had been tracking Moinuddin through his online activities and nabbed him no sooner did he land at the airport. It were the central intelligence agencies that had tipped off the state officials about Moinuddin, they added. According to Police, Moinuddin had planned to join his girlfriend Ayesha in Dubai from where they were to proceed to Syria via Turkey and establish links with ISIS militants. Ayesha is a British national and was formerly known as Nicky Joseph alias Nicole before she converted to Islam after coming into contact with Moinuddin, Police said. The accused had lived in the US for about four years including in Houston, Texas, and is said to have a MS degree in electronics from Texas Southern University. "As per our information, after his studies, Moinuddin was doing odd jobs during which time he got indoctrinated to ISIS ideology online and decided to join them. Moinuddin and Ayesha created various Face book groups under fictitious names and spread the ISIS ideology with the intention of attracting followers. After he was denied a visa extension, Moinuddin returned to Hyderabad in October last year and during the last two months, lured several youth across the country to join ISIS and wanted to take them to Syria," sources said.

The commander of The Resolute Support, the new mission of United States (US) and NATO forces in Afghanistan, General John Campbell on January 18 warned that the Islamic State (IS) is making recruitment in Afghanistan and Pakistan, reports Dawn. “We are seeing reports of some recruiting,” said General Campbell, adding, “There have been some night letter drops, there have been reports of people trying to recruit both in Afghanistan and Pakistan, quite frankly.” General Campbell said the IS group, which had a “hard message to sell” in Afghanistan, but there were concerns that the group had the potential to spread its message in the country and in neighbouring Pakistan. “The Taliban have their allegiance to Mullah Omar and a different philosophy and ideology than ISIS, but, potentially, there are people who are disgruntled with the Taliban, they haven’t seen [Taliban 'commander'] Mullah Omar in years, or they want to go a different way,” he said. Those disgruntled with the Taliban leadership could be “vulnerable to the ISIS message, and so we’re looking at it very hard”, he said, adding that the US and Afghan authorities had so far seen “only bits and pieces” of this group in Afghanistan. “We’re doing deep dives into it to make sure we’re seeing everything. I’ve made it a priority intelligence requirement for my staff, but I have not seen a whole bunch of it yet, to tell you the truth,” Campbell added.

Intelligence Bureau (IB) has prepared a list of 200 militants from different terror outfits which could try to carry out a strike to disrupt the Republic Day (January 26) celebrations at which United State (US) President Barack Obama will be the chief guest, reports The Times of India on January 22. Top Government sources said that the list has been shared with the security agencies involved in making arrangements for Obama's visit to New Delhi. Report said that this year, maximum number of spotters and informers drawn from IB, Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), anti-terror squads of Delhi, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (UP) and others states - around 2000 - are being deployed in the capital as the authorities are trying to leave nothing to chance. The list includes militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami (HuJI), Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Indian Mujahideen (IM), Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), Sikh militant groups, CPI-Maoist and North-East based organisations among others. The list also mentions the five absconding SIMI members who fled from Khandwa jail in Madhya Pradesh last year. The security agencies have been warned that some terrorists may change their appearance and try to mingle with the crowd. The large number of spotters will keep a special vigil on Rajpath and India Gate areas as also the entire Republic Day parade route. The details, sketches and photographs of all those shared regularly by US secret service, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) are also being shared with the personnel who would be on special anti-terror duty on the ground on January 26.

India’s external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), has warned that the threat from home-grown elements radicalised by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has emerged as the topmost terror threat across the globe even as the Afghanistan-Pakistan region remains the epicentre of global terror activity, reports The Asian Age on January 24. In a detailed report on the ISIS-inspired terrorist attacks in France, the RAW has said that the terrorists who carried out the deadly attack had connection with jihadists in AfPak. The report says that though the investigation into the attacks is still going on, it is evident that the terror attacks in France were mounted by home-grown elements who got radicalised over the last decade or so. According to the assessment of the agency, France is one of the four countries, apart from the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK) and Israel, that have prominently figured in the propaganda of the al Qaeda networks and in recent times of the ISIS. In India, the security agencies are keeping a close watch on the international security scenario vis-à-vis the ISIS as recent activities of ISIS-inspired Indian youth have come to their notice. For the Indian security agencies, a joint attack by the al Qaeda and ISIS on Indian cities remains a potent threat and a close watch is being kept on the social media as well as by liaising with counterparts in foreign countries to crack down on such attempts.

The local 'commander' of Islamic State, Yousuf al-Salafi, confessed during investigations that he has been receiving funds through the United States (US), reported Dawn on January 28 (today). Law Enforcing Agencies had claimed on January 22, 2015, that they arrested al-Salafi, along with his two companions, during a joint raid in Lahore District. However, sources revealed that al-Salafi was arrested sometimes in December 2014 and it was only disclosed on January 22, 2015. “During the investigations, al-Salafi revealed that he was getting funding, routed through America, to run the organisation in Pakistan and recruit young people to fight in Syria,” said a source privy to the investigations. Al-Salafi also confessed that he along with a Pakistani accomplice, reportedly imam of a mosque, was recruiting people to send them to Syria and was getting around USD 600 per person from Syria. “The US has been condemning the IS activities but unfortunately has not been able to stop funding of these organisations, which is being routed through the US,” a source said, adding, “The US had to dispel the impression that it is financing the group for its own interests and that is why it launched offensive against the organisation in Iraq but not in Syria.”
