Khanal said that the protest movement being organised by the opposition parties was solely meant to fight the growing Maoist totalitarianism and establish peace and harmony in the country. He also blamed the ruling alliance of shutting the doors to a meaningful dialogue to end the political crisis facing the country.

The Seventh General Convention of the ruling Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) is all set to start in the industrial city of Hetauda in the Makwanpur District on February 2 (today), reports Nepalnews.com. The first of its kind in over two decades, will dwell on party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda’s political report that calls for a 'capitalist revolution' and changes to the party's strategy of 'protracted People's War'. Some 2,500 representatives including observers and more than 1,000 volunteers are to participate in the event, dubbed as 'unity convention'.

Top opposition leaders at a mass meet organized in Dullu village of Dailekh District on February 2 claimed that the Government would collapse in just a matter of few days, reports Myrepublica.com. Dubbing some recent acts by the Government as characteristics of an autocratic regime, they claimed that the UCPN-M´s own deeds would lead to its fall. Addressing the Dullu mass meet, Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala said, “The Maoists think they can seize the state powers by threatening the people. But, they are daydreaming. They will ultimately share the fate of the deposed king.” He further said “The countdown has begun and the Government will soon fall”. As the first phase of protests launched by the opposition alliance is going to conclude on February 8, leaders from the agitating political parties on February 5 worked out protest programs in Kathmandu for the second stage of demonstrations across the country, reports Myrepublica.com. The alliance of nine opposition parties led by Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) have taken to the street since last month aimed at unseating the present Government and purportedly to foil the ruling coalition´s plan to impose autocratic rule in the country. CPN-UML leader Shankar Pokharel, a member of the taskforce, told "We have worked out the next phase of protests broadly. We will work on the proposal further in detail in the presence of top leaders. The final protest programs will be announced at the mass gathering in Kathmandu on February 5."

Addressing the closed session of the ongoing seventh general convention of Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) in Hetauda town in Makwanpur District, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, on February 6, told his party´s rank and file that it had become necessary for the party to stay in Government for the next 20-30 years. Bhattarai also sought support from the party organization to formulate party policy and programs accordingly. He said he would not step down any time soon without finding a suitable alternative. “We would have been in a serious trouble had we not been in the government. We would have landed in the International Criminal Court had we not been in the government,” said Bhattarai.

Nine political parties in the opposition spearheading nationwide anti-Government protests organized a massive show of strength in the capital Kathmandu on February 8, reports Nepalnews.com. Top leaders of Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and other opposition parties address the mass meeting calling for the ouster of the Bhattarai Government. Addressing the meeting, NC President Sushil Koirala accused the ruling Maoist of not letting go of war-time mentality. He said the Maoist party should act responsibly for the sake of the country. Similarly, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal said that the ruling party was using the Government to shield itself from the consequences of crimes it committed in the past. Other leaders of the opposition also echoed Khanal and Koirala and criticised the ruling party for being reluctant to resolve the political deadlock.

UCPN-M wrapped up its seventh General Convention (GC) in Hetauda town of Makwanpur District on February 8, the party re-elected Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda as its Chairman, reports Kantipuronline.com. At the seven-day convention that adopted a strategy of peaceful politics to accomplish a ‘new capitalist revolution,’ Dahal was once again able to consolidate his power with support from the rank and file. The GC also re-elected Baburam Bhattarai and Narayan Kaji Shrestha as the Vice-chairmen and Posta Bahadur Bogati as the General Secretary. PM Bhattarai had proposed Dahal continuing as the chairman, while Deputy Prime Minister Shrestha supported the proposal in the first meeting of the 98-member Central Committee (CC) elected at the GC. The appointments of four office bearers and members of the CC were endorsed through a voice vote in the closed session.

The Mohan Baidya of Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-Maoist-Baidya) on February 10 demonstrated in Kathmandu demanding the release of its cadres and leaders arrested in accusation of the murder of journalist Dekendra Thapa, reports The Himalayan Times. A protest rally begun from the Shantibatika was taken to Bagbazar, Putalisadak, Shahid Gate, New Road and Juddhaa Salik area and converged into a gathering. The participant at the gathering chanted slogans as withdraw war-time cases, release arrested on Dekendra's murder case, form Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Addressing the gathering, central member of the party, Dinesh Sharma, warned that if the cases of conflict period were rediscovered, the country would go back to conflict again. Similarly, Chairman of Nepal Teachers' Organisation affiliated to the CPN-M, Guna Raj Lohani, accused the journalist of disseminating the news about the Dailekh incident in a one-sided way.

Leaders from major political parties failed to settle contentious issues related to Government formation, election and peace process as all the sides remained stuck to their respective stances, reports Myrepublica.com on March 1. Top leaders of Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M), Nepali Congress (NC), Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) held talks on March 1 (today) on issues such as ensuring basic democratic principle of separation of powers and judicial independence. The leaders want to reach a package deal on all the three issues before forming an election government under the leadership of chief justice. The parties also couldn´t settle differences over a major provision on the proposed Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the criteria related to voters´ list and some conditions related to determining the rank of former UCPN-M combatants who have joined Nepal Army (NA).
