Maoist leader Prachanda on February 7 called for the immediate abolition of the country's monarchy, accusing King Gyanendra of trying to undermine a peace deal that threatens his throne. Prachanda told AFP, “He has not got enough power to control the country again, but he has the power to create problems.” “We are proposing that we have to take steps to declare a republic right away”, Prachanda added. He further said, “He has influence inside the army, inside the bureaucracy. He has influence inside the police force and he has influence in some sections of people, mainly Hindu fundamentalists. The king is trying to create problems by stirring the Mahadhesi movement because he knows that he has no relevance.”

The Kathmandu-based Industrial Security Group (ISG) – which comprises of representatives of the Embassies of France, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the Delegation of the European Commission, along with their bilateral Chambers of Commerce – has urged the Maoists to cease violence, abductions and extortion. According to Nepal News, the ISG in a statement on February 9 said, "In Kathmandu, while Maoist extortion has continued all along, it appears to be soaring in the run-up to the Maoist rally on February 13. Once again, the Maoists are demanding money, lodging and food from the businesses and residences in the Valley. We call upon the Maoists to cease these activities immediately. The Maoists' continuing use of violence and intimidation is in clear violation of their commitments under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and at complete odds with their new status as members of the Interim Parliament.”
