During an interview with Deccan Chronicle in her visit to the United Kingdom (UK), the former Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and daughter of former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom—Dunya Maumoon, has appealed India to put pressure on the Government of the Maldives to release her father and other relatives arrested during the State of Emergency imposed on February 5, reports Mihaaru on May 2. Friends [India] have to be there in the time of need and it is important that India be with us in this situation and support the Maldives and Maldivians in any way possible, in a purely advisory role, said Dunya.

I appeal to India to assist my father—former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who is also the father of modern Maldives & the architect of India-Maldives relations in the modern era”, tweeted Dunya Maumoon directed to India’s Minister of External Affairs (MEA) Sushma Swaraj.

The Maldives’ Criminal Court on May 8 convicted Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed for obstructing State functioning, and ordering the ‘shut down’ of the Supreme Court’s Government E-letter Management System (GEMS) in February 2018, and sentenced Abdulla Saeed to four months and 24 days in Jail, reports Mihaaru. This decision of Criminal Court’s judge Ibrahim Ali has marked the history where a Chief Justice was convicted for criminal offences. However, Abdulla Saeed had denied the charges against him in an earlier hearing, claiming that he had not been aware of GEMS being shut down. Although, this was the Chief Justice’s first conviction, there was no plausible reason to increase or decrease the leniency of his sentence, said Judge Ibrahim Ali. Saeed is also undergoing four other trials at the Criminal Court, for charges of terrorism, obstructing of justice, accepting bribes, and influencing official duties.

The Maldives’ top Judges—Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed of the Supreme Court of the Maldives, on May 10, found guilty on the charge of influencing official conduct and were sentenced to imprisonment for a year-seven months and six days, report Maldives Independent. Their trial was kept secret and not shared with the media or public. However, both Judges denied their charges. The Judges must hold their integrity and must not allow the public to raise questions about their honesty, loyalty and righteousness. But Judges Saeed and Hameed acted in contravention to the Oath of Justices of the highest court and violated the ethical and disciplinary standards of judges. They also influenced judges of the lower courts and damaged the judiciary process, said Judge Hussain Shaheed while announcing the verdict. The testimony of two ‘secret’ witnesses and several court orders submitted as evidence proved Saeed and Hameed were guilty beyond doubt, said Judge Shaheed.

Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed urged current President Abdulla Yameen to reconsider his decision and allow him [Nasheed] to run for the Presidency Elections this year if the people of the Maldives wish for, report Raajje on May 19. Though, the United Nations (UN) has announced their consent in his favour and five judges of the Maldives’ Supreme Court unanimously permitted him to contest in elections, the public of the Maldives did not get the opportunity yet to make the decision on this. Therefore, it is a request to the members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) from Thulhaadhoo constituency and other Atolls to vote for him in the upcoming party primaries, said Nasheed via Skype. “President Yameen would not want to contest against me. The upcoming elections are more important for both of us. It will be an election in which the Maldivian public will make one of the most important decisions for our nation which is currently seems to be hanging over a razor blade,” Nasheed referred to critical political situation in the Maldives.

A senior Member of Parliament (MP) of the United Kingdom (UK)—Sir Hugo Swire of the Conservative Party for East Devon Constituency has tweeted on May 23 that it was time to “name and shame” those responsible for oppressing the opposition party ahead of election in the Maldives, reports Avas. Sir Hugo urged the international community to come together and imposed ‘stringent action’ against the Maldives. Speaking at an event at the Vivekananda Foundation International in New Delhi, India on May 23, the Indian Naval Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba told working with the Maldives is a ‘challenge’ due to its inclination towards China, but India would continue to work its smaller Asian neighbour [Maldives], reports Maldives Independent. Earlier this year, the Maldives had skipped India-led naval exercise citing the excuse of the State of Emergency (SoE) in the Islands nation. At present, the Maldives is a ‘challenge’ to work with as the Constitution has been tweaked and some Islands have been given to China for development, which is a result of Maldives’ inclination towards China, said Admiral Lanba.

The former Maldivian President—Mohamed Nasheed on May 27, has said that there is a need for new Election Commission to be established before upcoming Presidential elections because the present Election Commission has crossed the ‘red line’ and trying to influence the primaries of a political party, reports Raajje. It is my request to the citizens of the Maldives and the international community to keep close watch over the Presidential Elections 2018. The political parties are the foundations of a democracy and the Election Commission is crossing the line by attempting to hinder their [parties’] political work, said Nasheed.

The Maldives’ Defence Minister Adam Shareef blamed the social media platform for ‘exaggerating’ the social issues in the Island and the irreligious discourse and politicisation of religious extremism are grave threat to the National Security of the Maldives, reportsMaldives Timeson May 28. “We know there is the problem of religious fundamentalism in the Maldives, but we are not a country selling concubines,” said Shareef at graduation ceremony at Clique College and referred to the statements by former President Mohamed Nasheed that Maldivians had been sold as concubines in the Syrian war [as fighters]. The Opposition party claimed that approximately 250 Maldivians are fighting in Iraq and Syria whereas Defence Minister Adam Shareef has said in January 2018 that official counts of Maldivians in Syria are 61. In April 2018, the Maldives government published a new policy paper addressing apostasy, foreign fighters and religious freedom that imposed stringent penalties on hate speech and which will be criminalised, and a tougher stance on mockery and misinformation regarding religion.

Therefore, the judge must consider their criminal record and the court’s release of defendants in prior cases, said their representatives Ismail Mohamed.
