India boycotts the inauguration ceremony of the newly build ‘Maldives-China Friendship Bridge’ or Sinamale Bridge, depicting the friendship and diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China, says report The Edition on September 2. The Indian Ambassador to the Maldives—Akhilesh Mishra was invited for the inaugural ceremony but Mishra declined to attend the event. India has expressed dismay due to the massive investment and grants given to the Maldives by the Chinese government, as well as the Maldives' favour to China with their foreign policy. The entire construction of the Sinamale bridge was carried out by the Chinese company China Harbour Engineering (CHEC).

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) on September 5 has disapproved the accusations imposed by the opposition party—Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) over President Abdulla Yameen for his involvement and association with a local company in illegal oil trade, reports The Edition. Earlier this week,MDP filed a case at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), in which the main opposition accused former Colonel of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)—Mohamed Ziyad, of being involved in illegal oil trade under Green Box Private Limited, and alleged that President Yameen was associated with the local company. However, the Police had conducted an extensive investigation into the case of the two tankers, of which the trial has commenced and two hearings already held. Further, the unidentified suspect charged over the case has been remanded until the end of the trial, said MPS Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan.

The United States government on September 7 [today] “threatened” the Maldives government with sanctions against people in the Maldives who ‘undermine democracy, the rule of law, and a fair electoral process’, reports Maldives Independent. The US was concerned about continued democratic back-sliding in the Maldives, particularly as the country prepared for a Presidential Election scheduled to be held on September 23, this year. If Maldives failed to return to a democratic path, the US will consider appropriate measures against those individuals who undermine democracy, the rule of law, and a free and fair electoral process, said an official at the US State Department—Heather Nauert.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) warned on September 10 that some unidentified people are conspiring ‘dangerous acts’ on forthcoming Presidential Election Day to highlight that polls are neither fair or free, to the international community, reports Maldives Independent. It is believed that such acts are being done to create questions about the freedom and fairness of the election, and acts that disrupt the peace and security of this country. The MPS have received information that depending on the election result, people are preparing to carry out dangerous acts. However, the Maldives Police would not allow any kind of dangerous acts to take place and harsh legal penalties would be imposed on those who conspire such acts or took part in or encouraged them, said Chief Superintendent Ahmed Shifan.

In a campaigning trip to Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaal Atoll, Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen has said that he is responsible for the disqualification of 13 [unnamed] Members of Parliament (MP)s over floor crossing, reports The Edition on September 11. Though the efforts were taken place to the most for the disqualification of these MPs but the Supreme Court is yet to accept the appeal case which was filed over a year ago by the unseated MPs. The disqualification of the defected lawmakers has made the pro-government lawmakers a stronger and more loyal team. Allegedly, the defected lawmakers were offered bribes by members of the opposition in order to defect and join the opposition parties, said President Yameen.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has requested the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to share the details of alleged plots to initiate the violence before the upcoming Presidential elections in the Maldives, reports The Edition on September 16. The MDP has not received any detailed information from the authorities in this matter; however the steps must be taken ahead of the polls on the basis of information now rather than wait for something to happen. The Police must strengthen the Security measures on the basis of the current Intelligence reports they have, said Mariya Ahmed Didi—the Spokesperson of MDP’s Presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Earlier, on September 11, MPS Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan stated that the authority had received intelligence reports of attacks that were planned to be executed throughout the country ahead of the Presidential elections scheduled on September 23.

The ‘false’ case was based on the claims infringing the President's electoral rights that were made by two MDP members ahead of the September 23 Presidential elections. The case was submitted on September 16 and was filed against MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef and Secretary General Anas Abdul Sattar, for accusing President Yameen of being involved in an illegal oil trade between North Korea and local company Green Box Pvt Ltd, during a press conference.

Addressing a rally in Addu Atoll, the Opposition Alliance Presidential candidate—Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on September 20, vowed to immediately release the two jailed judges of Supreme Court, reports Avas. The Chief Justice— Abdulla Saeed along with another senior court Judge— Ali Hameed, are facing four separate charges which includes terrorism, after being accused in the plot to overthrow the government were convicted of abuse of power to influence lower court judges and sentenced to one year, six months and one day in prison in June 2018. Judge Abdulla Saeed and Ali Hameed did not commit any crime to deserve their jailing. The Opposition Alliance government would free them, said Solih.

It is believed that there would be a split in the top ranks of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) if President Abdulla Yameen tried to maintain his power illegally, said Nasheed. Mohamed Nasheed was convicted on controversial terror charges and lives in exile. He is barred from contesting the upcoming Presidential elections that are scheduled for September 23.

Addressing the Maldivians at midnight of September 24, the President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih expressed his intentions to maintain the country as an Islamic State—without corruption, and pledged to maintain peace, prosperity with the implementation of the will of the people of the Maldives, reports The Edition. This is the moment of happiness with hope and history. For many of us, this journey has been difficult, says Solih. Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed offered his congratulations to President-elect Solih over his victory in the Presidential Elections 2018. In terms of percentage, Solih received 58.3 percent, whereas President Yameen received 41.7 percent of the votes. Solih is the Parliamentary group leader for the main opposition party— the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The party entered into a coalition with Jumhooree Party (JP), Adhaalath Party (AP) and the Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM), with the hope of winning the majority of votes in the 2018 Presidential election.

The Indian government on September 24 congratulated the Maldives’ newly President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih over his victory in the Presidential election in the Maldives and expressed the country’s commitment to the values of democracy and the rule of law, reports NDTV. India welcomes the successful completion of the third Presidential election process in the Maldives which, according to preliminary information, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has won. Also, India heartily congratulate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his victory and hope that the Election Commission (EC) will officially confirm the result at the earliest," read the statement by the India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). India's relations with the Maldives came under strain after Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen declared the State of Emergency (SoE) in the country on February 5, 2018, following an order by the country's Supreme Court to release a group of opposition leaders, who had been convicted in widely criticised trials. For this, India had criticised the Yameen government for the imposition of the SoE and urged it to restore the credibility of the electoral and political process by releasing political prisoners.

However, the Security Forces (SFs) in the Maldives assures that they will uphold the ‘shocked’ result of the Presidential election and would foil any attempt made by the defeated former President Abdulla Yameen to cling to power. The Maldives’ Election Commission (EC) on September 23, has announced the official result which confirmed the win of the alliance of opposition parties and its Presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as the seventh President of the Maldives, with 58.4 percent votes, reports Avas on September 29. The outgoing President Abdulla Yameen had 41.6 percent with 96,052 votes in his favour. Ibrahim Solih had been backed by Yameen's main political rivals including the now jailed former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, self-exiled former President Mohamed Nasheed, along with Jumhoory Party (JP) leader and business tycoon Gasim Ibrahim.
