The former Minister of Foreign Affairs and daughter of former President Abdul Maumoon—Dunya Maumoon claimed that India, being a big power in the neighbourhood of the Maldives, has failed to secure the release of her father from prison, reports Maldives Times on May 4. “I believe India has failed in its responsibility to maintain stability & assist in the establishment of democracy in the Maldives. I appeal to India to assist my father—former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who is also the father of modern Maldives & the architect of India-Maldives relations in the modern era”, tweeted Dunya Maumoon directed to India’s Minister of External Affairs (MEA) Sushma Swaraj.

A close aid of Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen and prominent leader in Maldives—Ahmed Nihan was denied entry to India on June 4, when he had come to Chennai, Tamil Nadu for medical consultations, reports The Indian Express. The incident prompted Maldives government to raise a concern with Indian government. Describing the incident as ‘unfortunate’, the Maldivian envoy to India—Ahmed Mohamed has told the Maldivian Foreign Ministry has taken up the matter with the Indian Ambassador in the Male City—Akhilesh Mishra and raised concern with the officials of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on June 6. “We have asked for the reason behind him being denied entry into the country [India]. He has been coming here for medical consultations in the past. This time also he came for similar consultations,” said Mohamed. I was not allowed to step on Indian soil due to my political affiliations as I was asked to identify which party I belonged to by the Indian Immigration officials, said Nihan. The incident comes days after a joint statement by several European Union (EU) countries, the United Kingdom (UK), Canada and the United States (US) expressed concern on May 31 over the “recent deterioration of the situation in the Maldives, especially in relation to the pre-election process”. Maldives is the only country in the neighbourhood which has not been visited by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last four years.

The Election Commission (EC) on June 8 revealed that the Presidential Elections will be held on September 23 of this year, reports Edition/Mihaaru. The date was decided in meeting comprising EC members, leaders of the Political parties, and all other important stakeholders of the election. The candidacy for the Presidency would open on July 15 and the potential candidates would have a 10-day period to submit their papers to the commission, said Election Commissioner Ahmed Shareef. Just as previous elections, ballot boxes would be placed in: Trivandrum and New Delhi in India; Colombo in Sri Lanka; Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia; London in UK and Singapore. Additionally, a ballot box would also be placed in Bangalore in India, revealed the EC. The Article 110 of the Constitution of the Maldives states that elections for the office of the President should be held within 120 – 130 days prior to the expiry of the existing Presidential term. Since the President elect has to take the oath and assume office on November 11, according to the Article 301 (b) of the Constitution, 120-days to the current presidential term expiring would be July 14.

The Maldives expressed its ‘disappointment’ on June 8 over its ‘defeat’ from Indonesia in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) seat vote, reports Maldives Independent. In the UNSC vote for one Asia-Pacific seat, Indonesia got more votes than the Maldives by 144 to 46. In its 72 years of the United Nations (UN), only 8 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have had the opportunity to serve on the Security Council. The Maldives is disappointed that small States are not getting the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the international peace and security, said an unnamed official of Maldivian Foreign Ministry. Indonesia has previously served three terms on the UNSC.

The leader of ruling party—the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) group and the Member of Parliament (MP) Ahmed Nihan Hussain Malik has emphasised that there is a need to amend the law to ban Maldivians who are self-exile in other countries may not run for the Presidential elections in the Maldives, reports Maldives Times on June 27. The amendment was brought forth for a very important reason and that is there are some who has expressed interest in quickly becoming the President of the Maldives right after coming to the country after a long time abroad and they cannot even properly speak in Dhivehi (the official language of the Maldives). This should only include self-exiles who move abroad and then return for a Presidency but those who migrate abroad, defame the country and hold multiple passports from different countries, said MP Nihan.

The Election Commission (EC) of the Maldives, on June 27, has stated that it would not recognise any political party primary or congress with the involvement of anyone sentenced to prison in the upcoming Presidential elections in the Maldives, reports The Sun. When the EC ordered the disbandment of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s primary, which was contested by former President Mohamed Nasheed, MDP had claimed that Nasheed had the right to participate in the Presidential Elections because the Supreme Court’s order on February 1 had ordered his release. But the order has since been overridden by the Supreme Court itself, said the ‘President’ of the EC Ahmed Shareef.

Expressing the disappointment over the Political developments in the neighbouring country—the Maldives, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on June 28 released a statement that the Political scenario in the Maldives is the matter of concern for India, reports The Indian Express. However, India welcomed the lifting of the State of Emergency (SoE) and has also called upon the Maldives government to ensure early resumption of the political process. It also urged the Maldivian government to allow the democratic institutions, including the judiciary, to function in a fair and transparent manner. The Maldivian government on June 28 has appointed Ahmed Abdulla Didi as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Maldives. The Supreme Court has sentenced the former President Maumoon Andul Gayoom and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court—Abdulla Saeed to 19 months of imprisonment. The trials were widely criticised—internationally too, were being observed as part of President Abdulla Yameen’s plan to extend his term and strengthen his supremacy, as Maldives heads towards general elections in September this year. Therefore, it is with deep dismay that we [India] learned that the former President of the Maldives, as well as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, are being sentenced to long prison terms without fair trial, read the statement released by the MEA.

After the former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed gave up the Party’s Presidential candidate ticket, the 791 delegates of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Congress at Ukulhas Island of Alif Alif Atoll on June 30 unanimously declared Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as its alternative candidate for the upcoming Presidential elections in the Maldives, reports Maldives Independent. Reportedly, the motion to award Ibrahim the ticket was proposed by MP Mohamed Aslam—Mohamed Nasheed’s campaign manager, who denounced the exiled leader’s widely criticised terrorism conviction as politically motivated. However, Nasheed will still be the MDP candidate if the situation changes when the Election Commission opens applications in July 2018.
