The Adhaalath Party (AP) on December 2 has announced that it will contest on 13 Constituencies in Maldives for 2019 Parliamentary elections, reports The Edition. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) received 40 percent, Jumhooree Party (JP) received 25 percent, Adhaalath Party (AP) received 15 percent and the Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) received 20 percent of proportions to contest their representatives. However, the MDP on December 1 has stated that they did not sign any seat-sharing agreements with any parties and declared their decision to contest all 87 constituencies. The Parliamentary elections in Maldives are schedule for March 2019.

Addressing the gathering at the office of Progressive Party of Maldives [PPM] on December 3, former President Abdulla Yameen has said that the ballot papers were destroyed amidst a case filed by PPM to Maldives Police Service [MPS], to shed light on the allegedly fraudulent ballot papers used in the 2018 Presidential election, reports The Edition. PPM did not get any response to the case submitted at the Prosecutor General [PG]'s Office calling for an investigation into the alleged vote fraud during the Presidential election.

Aishath Mohamed Didi is appointed as an Ambassador to India. The new coalition government will appoint officials to political posts with percentage for each political party. The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) would get 40 percent, with 25 percent business tycoon Gasim Ibrahim's Jumhoory Party (JP) and 20 percent for former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The other main party in the coalition, religiously conservative Adhaalath Party (AP) would receive the smallest slice with 15 percent.

The Indian Warship INS Rana, on December 9, has entered the Maldivian waters for a joint Surveillance operation of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), with Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF’s) Coastguard, report Raajje. Reportedly, INS Rana will be in the Maldives waters till December 14, and is part of the serial patrol and surveillance operations being conducted by Indian officials. The Surveillances would ensure that no illegal activities are carried out in the EEZ, and will overall improve the Security in the region.

The former President Yameen is summoned in connection to an investigation about a large sum of money that was deposited into Yameen's personal account during the 2018 Presidential Elections held on September 23 [this year], said Secretary-General of Progressive Party of Maldives [PPM] Mohamed Hussain Shareef aka Mundhu. Recently, reports were surfaced that near to the Presidential Election, total MVR 22.5 million was deposit in two transactions over two different days into the former President Yameen’s personal bank account with the Maldives Islamic Bank [MIB].

India is Maldives’ closest neighbour and citizens of the two countries [India and the Maldives] are bound by ties of friendship and cultural similarities. Not only a closest friend but, India is one of Maldives’ largest trading partners as well. Within those close connections, trade and commerce have flourished, said President Solih. Also, Maldives is grateful that India hosts thousands of Maldivian students to explore the opportunities to attend world-renowned educational institutions in India and learn from some of the world’s best doctors, engineers, and technologists, said President Solih.

Earlier, a lawsuit was filed challenging the legality of the PPM leadership and asking the Civil Court to handover party reins to the elder party member and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. But before a single hearing could be held, the Supreme Court had taken over the case. We can't head to an election with the PPM's future lies in uncertainty. The Supreme Court is on holiday-break and we cannot be sure of when or how the verdict would come. So we can't take any chances, said former President Yameen.

As reported in the Maldivian media, India wanted to open a military base in the Maldives in exchange of the financial granted to the Maldives during its President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s first visit to India in earlier December 2018. In response, the Maldivian Foreign Minister [FM] Abdullah Shahid “categorically” rejected such media reports, terming them “baseless and aimed at discrediting” the newly-elected government of the Maldives. The Government of Maldives assures its citizens that it will always act in the National interest of the Maldives, and will not undertake any international engagement that will compromise the Sovereignty and Independence of the country [the Maldives], said FM Sahid.
