According to official sources, the Sirpur and Chennur dalam (squad) ‘commander’ and ‘action team’ member of left wing extremists—Naxalite—of the banned People’s War Group (PWG), Durgam Madanaiha alias Santhosh was killed and two PWG cadres were injured during an encounter in the Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh on March 1. The injured Naxalites reportedly managed to escape from the encounter site. Santosh, involved as many as 15 killings, was carrying a head money of Rupees two lakh.

Visakhapatnam Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police T A Tripathy, however, said, "we do not rule out the possibility of the presence of action teams. But, there was never an incident caused by such action teams in the North Coastal districts. The PWG had been operating through its local guerrilla squads till now. But during this election, they are targeting individuals and making all efforts to create scare among the leaders."

A former Dalam (squad) 'commander' of the outlawed People's War Group (PWG), who had recently established the "New Radical Yuvajana Sangham," was killed in an encounter with the police on the outskirts of Sanugula village in the Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh on March 11. During combing operations near the village, under Jammikunta police station limits, police reportedly came across three left wing extremists-Naxalites- and in the exchange of fire that followed, Kurre Odelu alias Shankar was killed. However, the other two Naxalites escaped. A spring field rifle and five live cartridges were recovered from the possession of the slain Naxalite.
