Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit Deputy Commissioner Mohamad Mohibul Islam Khan said that Akram Hossain Niloy, one of the top leaders of Neo-JMB, wanted to move to Syria via Turkey along with his parents and sister for carrying out jihadist operations, reports Dhaka Tribune on May 3. But they finally could not make it to Syria as the Turkish embassy in Dhaka denied them visas. Later, Niloy changed his plans and tried to get a visa from India for himself only. He entered India illegally and managed an Aadhar card (Indian NID card) to apply for a passport. But before his passport was issued, one of his associates was arrested by Indian police. Fearing arrest, Niloy returned to Bangladesh and went into hiding, but a few months later the CTTC Unit arrested him on March 22.

Imams and khatibs of different mosques at a views-exchange meeting held at Paltan area in the capital Dhaka city on May 5 vowed to play their part in preventing militancy, terrorism and drug addiction, reportsThe Daily Star. Imams, khatibs and muezzins of the mosques from Motijheel, Paltan, Kamalapur and Shahjahanpur areas as well as teachers of various madrasas participated in the programme. They decided to deliver messages of Islam against militancy and narcotics at different prayers - including Juma and Tarabih during the upcoming Ramadan - so that people, especially youths, cannot be badly influenced. If the sermons, which some mosques are currently delivering sporadically, could be delivered in a unified way, it would be more effective, they said.
