Law enforcement agencies have said that the extremists are plumbing the hidden depths of the “dark web” to avoid closer Police monitoring of social media platforms, reports Dhaka Tribune on September 6. “Although members of the fundamentalist groups are moderately educated, they are all techies. On top of that, they are trained very well so it is not too difficult for them to use the dark web,” a senior police officer told. Amanul Islam Murad, a cyber security expert in national infrastructure, warned that the dark web could become “a source of serious trouble”. “Militants could come back strongly if the dark web menace is not addressed,” he told. Head of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, Monirul Islam, also said encrypted extremist publications were available on the dark web. “We are trying to enhance our expertise in that regard,” he said.

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) officials said that two bomb-disposal robots would soon be used in Bangladesh for busting explosive-stashed militants' dens where the risk of death lurks in every corner, reports The Daily Star on September 16. The robots, costing around BTK 10 crore including 200 percent tax and expenditure for staff training, have already been delivered, said CTTC officials. The remotely controlled German-made robots are capable of breaking into militants' dens, defuse explosives on the spot or move them to a safer place, reducing the exposure of law enforcers and risk of casualties. The CTTC unit, which specializes in fighting militancy, is also getting a Tk-14-crore Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) van from the US. The Armoured Personnel Carrier-like vehicle is supposed to arrive within a month.

The Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 1 on September 18 posted for October 10 the pronouncement of verdict in two cases for grenade attack on an Awami League (AL) rally in Dhaka on August 21, 2004, reports New Age. Tribunal judge Shahed Nuruddin passed the order after concluding the hearing of final arguments of the prosecution and defence counsel for 49 accused, including acting Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman, now in London, and his cousin retired Navy officer Saiful Islam Duke. 24 people, including late president Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman, were killed and over 200 were injured in the grenade attack. AL President Sheikh Hasina, now the Prime Minister, escaped the attack but the explosions caused her hearing damage. Two cases—one for the murder and the other under the Explosive Substances Act—were filed for the grenade attack.
