76 persons were injured across the country on April 1, as clashes between the Police and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI)i- Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres continued, reports The Independent. In Rangpur District, at least 50 people were injured when the cadres of ICS, protesting the arrest of their central president, damaged 12 buses and set ablaze two buses in Dharmadas area on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway. In Barisal District, at least 10 persons were injured in a half-hour clash between Police and BNP-JeI cadres in Barisal city. Eight BNP-JeI cadres were arrested from the city. In Rajshahi District, at least eight people, including a Police official, were injured in a clash between JeI-ICS cadres and Police. The clashes erupted when the JeI-ICS cadres brought out a procession in Shalbagan area. In Jhenidah District, at least five ICS cadres were injured when the Police and ICS cadres locked in a clash in the Jhenidah town. Police arrested one ICS cadre in this connection. In Dhaka city, the BNP-JeI cadres exploded four homemade bombs and set ablaze seven vehicles, including one ATN News vehicle, in front of the BNP's Nayapaltan office in the city just after a BNP rally. The driver of the ATN News car, Solaiman, suffered injuries during the attack. In Chittagong District, Police arrested seven JeI-ICS cadres, in connection with a case filed for torching and vandalising vehicles on March 31 in Bahaddarhat area. In Khulna District, in a pre-hartal (shut down) raid, a team of Police arrested JeI leader Prof. Abdul Matin and 30 ICS cadres from separate places in the Khulna city.

Police also recovered huge bomb making materials, books on jihad, donation receipts, petrol, identity cards, mobile phones, computer, laptop, CDs, two motorbikes and a megaphone from the mess. Police said the arrestees were collecting donation to carry out subversive activities in the area. The arrestees collected Taka 750,000 and Taka 500,000 from two coaching centres. The daylong hartal (general shutdown) in the 16 northern Districts of the country is going on with some stray incidents of violence on April 3 (today), reports The Daily Star. Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student front of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), called the shutdown demanding immediate release of party President Delwar Hossain who was arrested from Dhaka city on March 31. The violence includes arson, removing slippers from rail tracks, vandalism and minor clashes. No injury was reported till filing of the report around 9:40am.

In Rajshahi District, five activists of the BNP, including the District BNP president Nadim Mostafa, were injured as the Police fired rubber bullets into a procession of pickets. The counsel said the EC has given provisional registration to JeI as a political party in November 2008 as the party satisfied the commission by saying that they would submit an amended constitution after its council meeting. He was placing arguments before the High Court (HC) during a hearing on a writ petition filed by Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, secretary general of Bangladesh Tariqat Federation and 24 others challenging the legality of JeI’s registration as a political party. The petition was filed with the HC on January 25 in 2009.
