A woman Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) hailing from Chhattisgarh, identified as Ungi Madvi alias Roshni, surrendered before the Police in Malkangiri District of Odisha on January 10, reports The Times of India. Madvi, a resident of Pitadaba village under Katekalyan Police limits in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh, was an active member of Mahupadar Local Organising Squad (LOS) in Kanger Ghati area associated with the ‘Dharba division’ of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) of the CPI-Maoist and was reportedly involved in several Maoist offensives in the district. The Odisha government had announced a cash reward of INR 100,000 on her head. In a release, the Police said establishment of Border security force (BSF) Company Operating Bases (COBs) at Mahupadar, Temurpalli and Kartanpalli, which created a peaceful and secure environment in Tulsi Pahad area, also led her to surrender, Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Nitesh Wadhwani said.

Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, one of whom carried a reward of INR 500,000 on his head, surrendered in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 13, reports The Pioneer. Lokesh Muchaki alias Ganga alias Barum, Muchaki Muda, and Ayata Kuhdam turned themselves in on January 13, Dantewada Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Rai said. Ganga, who carried the bounty, was the Dumam Local Organisation Squad (LOS) ‘commander’ while the two others were lower-rung cadres of the CPI-Maoist outfit. Santosh Vasant Shelar alias Vishwa alias Painter (33), a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘deputy commander’, who disappeared from Pune in 2010, has surrendered to the Pune Police in the Pune District of Maharashtra, reports marathi.hindustantimes.com on January 22. Shelar has been ill for the past few days and has come to Pune. Shelar is a native of Kasewadi, in Bhawani Peth, and has been missing since 2010. His family had filed a missing complaint at the Khadak Police Station. The anti-Naxal operation (ANO) team of Rajnandgaon District in Chhattisgarh announced the list of wanted Maoists in the Tanda Area Committee in 2019. In this list, the name Shelar was in the fourth position. The ANO team said that he was the ‘deputy commander’ of the area committee. Shelar was also alleged to be associated with the Pune-based cultural outfit Kabir Kala Manch (KKM), which according to the Police is a “Maoist front organisation.” He was said to have a 303 rifle. Currently, he has been admitted to Sassoon Hospital and is being monitored by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).

Bheema, who belongs to Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana, worked as a ‘militia’ (people’s army of the Maoists) member in the Cherla area of the district in 2019, and later he joined the ‘second CRC’ of the CPI-Maoist and was promoted to ‘section commander’ in November 2022. Soni joined the CPI-Maoist in 2018, and later she attached herself to the ‘second CRC', and in December 2022, she was promoted to ‘ACM’. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Southern Range, Jai Narayan Pankaj, informed us that they were tasked with reactivating the North-South corridor from Jharkhand to Chhattisgarh through south-central Odisha. They were identified as JJMP’s self-styled ‘zonal commander’ Manohar Parhiya alias Vimlesh Parhiya, who was carrying a bounty of INR 1 million on his head, and Deepak Kumar Bhuiyan alias Kundan, an ‘area commander’ of the banned organisation, the Police said. Manohar has allegedly been involved in several crimes, including the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaivardhan Singh, Police added. Manohar revealed that he had joined the CPI (Maoist) in 2004 at the young age of 13. Later, he transitioned to the JJMP in 2011, where he remained active for 13 years. As many as 15 Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including a minor and two women cadres, who were active in the Saranda Forest region in the West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand, surrendered before the Police on April 11, reports The New Indian Express. All the surrendered Maoist cadres belong to the squad of Misir Besra aka Bhaskar aka Sunirmal aka Sagar Ji, who carries a bounty of INR 10 million on his head, and Patiram Majhi aka Anal Da. The Police stated that the Maoists chose to surrender due to their frustration with the exploitation of the people by top Maoist leaders. “A total of 15 Maoists, including one minor and two female cadres, put down their arms before the police on Thursday. All of them being locals, it will have a great impact on the strength of the red rebels as it will weaken them further," said Chaibasa Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashutosh Shekhar.

Six Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including three women cadres, from Dandakaranya special zonal committee, who were involved in two of the biggest massacres of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, surrendered before Police in Alluri Sitarama Raju District in Andhra Pradesh on April 22, reports The Times of India. Those who surrendered are Khuram Mithilesh alias Raju (37), ‘South Bastar divisional committee member’ and ‘secretary’ of Kistaram area committee; Barse Masa (30), Vetti Bheema alias Raju (32), Vanjam Rame (all area committee members), Madkam Sukki (27), and Dudi Sony (23). Eighteen Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including three women, surrendered before Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Dantewada Police in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on april 24, reports The Times of India. The surrendered cadres were members of the Bhairamgarh and Malanger area committees and include ‘section commander’ of Hurrepal panchayat ‘militia’ (people’s army of the Maoists) platoon ‘A’ Hidma Oyam (34), ‘deputy commander’ of panchayat ‘militia’ platoon Sambati Oyam (23), ‘vice-president’ of Krantikari Mahila Adivasi Sangthan (KAMS) of Kakadi panchayat, Gangi Madkam (28), and Hurrepal Chetna Natya Manch (CNM) member Hungi Oyam, said Police. Dantewada Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Rai told that all the surrendered cadres were involved in digging up roads, uprooting trees, and hanging up Maoist posters and banners. He said he has appealed to Maoists to give up violence and join the mainstream.
