A special Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi, on January 22, awarded death sentence to three men, on four counts, convicted of carrying out a terrorist attack on the Taxila Church in August 9, 2002 killing four nurses and injuring 20 others. Judge Manzoor Ahmad Mirza awarded the capital punishment to Saifur Rehman, Abu Bakar and Ayaz for attacking the church with grenades. The court also imposed a Rupees 100,000 fine on each of the convicts. The court also awarded life sentence to the three convicts, on eight counts each, for injuring the 20 people and fined them Rupees 50,000 each. Three other convicts, Ayaz, Sabir Hussain and Taufeeq were awarded imprisonment for assisting in the crime.

US Attorney General John Ashcroft said in Washington that the convictions were handed down against Masoud Khan, Abdur Raheem and Seifulla Chapman in US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, by Judge Leonie Brinkema. "The defendants convicted today were associates of Lashkar-e-Taiba," said Ashcroft.

An anti-terrorism court in Karachi acquitted on May 18 a terrorist of the outlawed Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Al-alami (HuMA) in a case concerning a hand-grenade attack on a police van in October 2001. Eight members of a newly identified terrorist group, Jundullah (God’s Brigade), were remanded to police custody by an Anti-Terrorism court in Karachi on June 14 for their alleged involvement in the June 10- ambush on the Karachi Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Ahsan Saleem Hyat. The outfit’s leader Attaur Rehman has been charged with attacking the Corps Commander’s convoy and other bomb attacks in Karachi. "The Jundullah group is a new terror group which has links with Al Qaeda, and their members have been trained in Wana," Police Chief Kamal Shah told reporters. Rehman told interrogators his cadres were targeting Westerners, foreign missions, army and police officers, said Shah.

An Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) in Karachi on July 1 indicted nine activists of the proscribed Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Al-alami (HuMA) for their involvement in the Macedonian consulate bomb blast case. According to prosecution, the accused killed three persons on December 5, 2002, in premises of the Macedonian consulate in Karachi and later blasted the office with explosives. The accused were reportedly arrested in March 2004 following raids conducted at Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Clifton areas in Karachi and during interrogation they admitted their involvement in the case as they intended to take revenge over the killing of eight Pakistanis at Macedonian border in March 2002. The Macedonian police on May 1, 2004, had acknowledged that the killing of Pakistanis was staged to win United States’ support and that the victims were innocent illegal immigrants.

The judge reportedly convicted and sentenced the accused, identified as Attaullah, Azam and Muhammad Riaz, in about five cases. Al Badr is a terrorist outfit currently active in the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir. The court ordered immediate release of the appellants if not required in any other case. The appellants had reportedly contended that they were falsely implicated in the case and they were not affiliated with any of the outlawed groups.

The report also adds that after the Sialkot and Multan bomb blasts, the Punjab Home Department had prepared a list of 679 names and placed them under the Fourth Schedule for involvement in sectarian activities in the province, under Section 11-EE of the Anti-Terrorist Act 2002. People placed under the Fourth Schedule are required to report to their station house officer (SHO) every evening and require his permission to leave the police station jurisdiction.
