Rafiq alias Akhlaq, head of a militant group Jundul Khyber, was killed by the cadres of Ansarul Islam (AI) in Bagh locality of the Tirah Valley in Khyber Agency, reports The News. The sources said that Akhlaq had abducted an associate of the rival Tariq Afridi group, a commander of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and imprisoned him at his Hujra (guest House) in Narkhaw area of Maidan being controlled by AI. The TTP asked the AI that one of its fighters had been detained by Akhlaq and sought their help to get the captive released. The sources added that members of the AI raided the Hujra of Akhlaq two days back and got the ‘prisoner’ released, which infuriated Akhlaq. The sources said that Akhlaq hurled a hand-grenade and opened fire on the AI men that led to an exchange of fire. In the ensuing firefight, Akhlaq was killed. Three of his associates were also captured by the AI cadres. Akhlaq was appointed as ‘chief’ of Jundul Khyber in May 2010 after ‘Commander’ Adnan Afridi parted ways with the TTP. Adnan had developed differences with the TTP leadership over the killing of his associates by Tariq Afridi. On October 29, 2010, the bullet-riddled body of Adnan was found in Rawalpindi.

Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Qaim Ali Shah on June 5 argues that the recent spree of targeted killings in Karachi is not politically motivated; instead, he claims that it is a turf war between criminal gangs who are out to occupy each others’ territory in show of might, reports The Express Tribune. Addressing a press conference at the CM House, Shah said, “Every murder cannot be attributed as targeted attacks. There is no politically motivated murder, but there is a conspiracy for giving air to ethnic and sectarian violence in Karachi.” Promising strict action against those involved in criminal activities, he said that 60 to 70 per cent killings were due to personal enmity while the rest could be attributed to ethnic and sectarian divide. But he claimed that “these sectarian and ethnic killings have been controlled to some extent”.

Two militants were killed and four persons, including two security men, received injuries in separate incidents in Khyber Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on December 25, reports Dawn. Sources said that a militant was killed and another injured in a firing incident in Loe Shalman area of Landi Kotal. Militants holed up in Ranay Parchaw, a border village of Afghanistan across the Kabul River near Torkham, wanted to hire some boats to cross the river into Pakistan. The boat owners refused to lend them boats as Security Forces (SFs) had imposed a ban on ferry service owing to movements of militants, they said. The refusal by the boat owners infuriated the militants, who started firing at them from across the border. In retaliatory firing by the boat owners from Shalman Khula village, one militant was killed and another received injuries. The SFs, stationed at a nearby hilltop, also reached the spot and took positions along the riverside to stop militants from crossing over into Pakistan.
